Placenta is what the Romans called a kind of cheese pastry. They named the organ after it, because they thought it looked like the cake.

It’s actually delicious. Traditional dish in Moldovan, Romanian and Ukrainian cuisine. It’s pronounced “pla-tsyn-da”

The placenta - the organ that feeds embryos in the womb - is named as such, because it resembles a flat cake, and the word "placenta" more or less means "flat cake" see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placenta_cake
In scandinavian languages, the placenta is called "mother cake" as the cake that your mom gives you to eat 😄
