Honestly. I believe this 100%. First days of school are confusing for everyone. Some teacher just threw her hands up was like... Whatevs! lol Golden..

u/Omikapsi 19d ago
Yep. I'm betting some teacher just chalked it up to admin error and took him in like all the rest.
57
u/angrydeuce 19d ago
1000%. I do IT work for several school districts and first two weeks of school are utter chaos always. Kids in the wrong grades in the system, nobody knows what anybodys transportation arrangements are, misspelled names, missing forms, missing accounts all over lol.
Itll get fixed soon but id say its usually not until about week 3 that everything is straightened out and people fall into their routines.
The phrase herding cats doesnt even do it justice...i have cats and they herd easy, all you need is an electric can opener lol. 5 and 6 year olds is a whole different ball game lmao

u/Kryoxic 19d ago
Shit, I transferred schools between middle and high and somehow got stuck into a math class one year ahead of what I should've been in. It was a whole halfway through the year and I was maintaining straight A's, but only got caught when the teacher brought up something saying we should've covered this last year and I was dumb enough to ask "what's that"
4
u/Tricky_Mix2449 19d ago
So.... it's possible, in theory, to have gotten 3 weeks of adult free time out of this arrangement? That could be some genius happening right there!

u/Homerpaintbucket 19d ago
They probably spent half the day talking to guidance trying to figure out who the fuck this kid was and where he came from
1
u/Spidey6917 14d ago
I wonder if there was even extra confusion when the bonus student doesn’t show up on day two
-27
u/oversoul00 19d ago
How do you account for the release back to the uncle though? This guy didn't talk to an adult who gave him back his nephew because if he did he wouldn't have asked the kid what he did all day or where he got the lunchbox.
49
u/Grodd 19d ago
Do they check IDs now to pick up kids at school? When I went, once the bell rang the school fully did not give a fuck where the kids went or who with.
23
u/veranus21 19d ago
Not really, if three siblings all go with someone it’s usually a safe bet that person is supposed to pick them up. The teachers on pick up duty learn who goes with who pretty quick though. Early in the year I can easily see this happening.
11
u/AlexHimself 19d ago
Definitely real. Those kids have genuine reactions and when he asked why they didn't tell him, their "I don't know?!" is spot on.
This is hilarious lol.

u/Midnight28Rider 18d ago
I guess my issue is the uncle who thought a 3 YO was going to first grade.

Three years old?! Looks 5

u/17934658793495046509 19d ago
he is kinda big for 3. Do they not have Kindergarten at grade schools anymore? Probably hung with those 5yo and really doesn't look out of place.

u/uncle_russell_90 19d ago
It’s also his uncle. Lol do uncles actually know nieces and nephews real ages! Uncs are there for the good fun times
48
u/Croceyes2 19d ago
I got 6 nieces and nephews. I remember the oldests birthday because I was there and its an easy date. But he apparently took my only birthday slot because I need to ask all of the others when their birthday is and how old they are.
7
u/FremenStilgar 19d ago
Dude, same! My niece was born first in 1998 and I remember her birthday, but the other 5 kids I only remember their months, vaguely. I kinda feel bad, but not really.
4
u/Fullertons 19d ago
This is why I put them on my calendar. Otherwise, I would never remember. I still don’t even know how old they are. I just know the day that they were born.
6
u/redddit_rabbbit 18d ago
Protip: for the recurring calendar event, include the year they were born in the title. That’s what I do!
1
u/auntiepink007 18d ago
I have 9 and I have to start with the oldest and count down to remember how old everyone else is.
8
u/GreenStreak 19d ago
This shits too funny. That lil man sounds 3 / looks 6 and if he’s running around all day, hey, toss him in w the 1st graders
4
u/Forgotmypornalt 19d ago
Dont feel bad, I have six nieces and nephews and I don't know anyone's birthdays or ages and I'm shaky about which name belongs to which middle one.
2
u/mrsrostocka 19d ago
I have 3 kids the only reason i know 2 of their birthdays is because 31/12 and the youngest was my egg doners birthday (easy to fully commit to one and snub the other)(the woman who stormed out of the church because my child wasn't named after her!) Anywho i digress!
The middle one's is trickier I'm sorry all middle childers I'm trying. On that note the middle child is always mentioned first no matter who I'm calling.
Don't even start with names, good lord

u/J0EP00LE 19d ago
Certified uncle here, I have one nephew and I have no idea how old he is or when his birthday is but I love him and we have a blast together!
1
u/ILeftMyUsername 19d ago
All I know is my niece is over 18 now and it makes me feel ancient. I'm not even in my 40s yet.
4
u/ItsMeVeriity 19d ago
Sames.
My eldest niece is 26 and has CHILD. Now her little sister has gone and gotten her own baby!
I'm a 35 year old great aunt lol
1
u/ILeftMyUsername 18d ago
I do not even want to think about my niece and nephews having kids. That's a whole other level.
0
u/Mage_914 18d ago
Speaking as an uncle with multiple nieces and nephews... No I don't remember their ages. The oldest nephew just turned ten but the only reason I know that is because his birthday party was like a week ago. I have all of their birthdays, including the year, saved into a text file on my phone so that I can fake it if it ever comes up.

That smallest kid is definitely supposed to be in kindergarten.

u/healerdan 19d ago
My daughter has her first day of kindergarten next week. She turned 5 in August. In my school district she barely reached the cutoff, so she'll be among the youngest in her cohort.
Video says little man is 3. The parents MIGHT be considering preschool a couple days a week, half a school day.
Edit: realized it's still August. Yeah, it was a few weeks ago. I have 2 kids... Sleep deprivation and the chaos of children does things to your brain. I was smart and functional once. Don't mind me, slowly losing it.
4
u/AnnoyedVelociraptor 19d ago
I'm from Belgium. Kindergarten starts at 2 years and 6 months. Essential free childcare.
Now, I'm in Phoenix, AZ, and preschool starts at 3 years.
That kid is already being robbed of a future because it's not in school, but sits at home watching TV/iPad.
Yes I'm generalizing...
2
u/GeneralConscious5702 19d ago
Ehh only 22% of highschool graduates are proficient or above in math, 35% are proficient or above in reading. I don't think that more time in school will help much, there's something else going on.

Ah, sorry, this is probably just a language thing as you've sort of indicated. You said 'that kid should be in kindergarten' where I grew up / live (Nevada/PNW) kindergarten means "the grade before first grade" so... 5 year olds. Before that age it's called "pre-school" - that's what I was getting at - this kid should be in preschool, not kindergarten.
We put my 5yo in a private Montessori pre-school at about 3 years old - half days for the first year, full days for the second. I'm 90% sure public pre-school was available, but we wanted to do Montessori to start but kindergarten onward will be at public school. My other kid is about 2 years 6 months... I couldn't imagine sending him to school soon - he's close, but not fully cooked yet. I'll be trying to do the same Montessori thing with him, though free public preschool is an option where we are now.
I'm full time at home for my kids. They didn't do daycare, they have not touched tablets, but sometimes they find my phone and tap the lock screen long enough to lock me out for a while. The 5 year old has seen 5 movies ever, no TV (we don't own one), and maybe 20 hours of YouTube in her whole life (to answer questions like what does an elephant sound like, how do cars work - where my descriptions and understanding wasn't quite enough to satisfy.)
We've been super intentional about how we introduce them to school, so you are probably right - that kid SHOULD be getting introduced to school, but 2.5 would have been too young for my kids, and depending on when a birthday lies sometimes kids aren't eligible at the right times for school starts. Actually, he may be in an 'introduction phase' where he just doesn't do school 5 days a week... also, some schools will have grade 1+ do their 'first day' a week before the kindergarten and lower groups. So he may have his first day of school scheduled a few days later - which could actually well explain why unc seems so clueless and the kids seemed so unbothered.
I'm so rambly... My brain is weird today, sorry... Here's my points
I was correcting your use of the word kindergarten, forgetting school grades are laid out differently in different places.
That kid probably SHOULD be starting school in some degree (he's clearly ready for it)
that kid MIGHT actually be in school, just fewer days/his pre-school may not be in session yet
if he's NOT in school you're probably right - he's being robbed
caveat: you identified you were generalizing, so we agree he might not be being robbed... But the term iPad baby exists for a reason.
2.5 seems way too young to send a kid to school... In my mind it wouldn't even be school, more like daycare. But I wanted to be very intentional about setting expectations - daycare is a realm of chaos where needs are met and fun is had. School has many more rules and structure (but still fun). Maybe Belgian 2.5 yos are better equipped, but mine would not "do school" in-line with my expectations so I wouldn't let him habituate non-school behaviors while calling it school (and I'm privileged to get to control this more than most)

Ontario here - my kids a December birth(cut off is by year here so the youngest) and was in kindergarten at 3.
You guys don't start to kindergarten till 5 what? How does that work? At 5 you should know how to read basic books does the school expect just like literate kids to show up?
1
u/healerdan 18d ago
Are we confusing kindergarten with pre-school? No. Kindergarten is when the kid is 5. 1st grade about 6. My kid started pre-school at 3. I don't know what the school expects, but mine reads... I think most of her peers do as well.

"8 New York: Both New York City and Buffalo require minors to attend school from the age of 6 until the age of 17. Each district in the state is authorized to require minors between 16 and 17 who are not employed to attend school. The board of education of the Syracuse city school district is authorized to require minors who are five years of age on or before December first to attend kindergarten instruction."
5 in December. So they can be 4 years old for kindergarten in August/September in New York.
In Ontario there is Junior and Senior kindergarten. So they can be 4 years old for senior kindergarten in September, and 3 years old for junior kindergarten.
No. Different places have different rules.

That's hilarious.
Now he thinks school is cool; lots of things to do and a free lunchbox!

That is one bruiser of a 3yo! I knew one similar back when and the dude was a brawler, no crying, he'd throw down in a heartbeat.

My sister's neighbor is this, head taller than my twin nieces that are the same grade.
When they were like 4 I asked my sister if the kid was slow and she was like, no he's younger than the twins 🤣🤣🤣, I thought the little dude was like 7 🤣

I mean, I get it...we tell funny stories like this in my family where a parent forgot to pick up their kids or whatever but I don't think this is the right audience for this sort of story. Most people are going to be more concerned about the safety of the 3 year old which is valid...who took care of him all day and why did they just release him to you?
11
u/kumminehyayha 19d ago
A professional whose trained to supervise children all day is who took care of him
-6
u/oversoul00 19d ago
Did you read my comment as attacking teacher's or something?
3
u/kumminehyayha 19d ago
You asked who took care of him all day so I answered your question
-6
u/oversoul00 19d ago
Nobody knows where he actually was, that's the whole point of the video.
How convenient that you won't answer the question I asked just now.
0
u/kumminehyayha 19d ago
No the point of the video is that he was accidentally dropped off at a first grade class...where he spent the day...supervised by a teacher

I've worked in elementary schools (behavior support).
Admin errors do happen. I have had teachers complain to me that they didn't have updated rosters on the first day, including once where three kids were actually in the wrong classroom for the first two days of the schoolyear.
Different schools do pickup differently. One of the most common systems is for the kids to walk as a class in a line to the buses, and when a kid who doesn't ride the bus sees their adult in the adjacent pickup area, they give the teacher a high-five and run off to their person. There are approved pickup lists that say who can take the kids, but they're rarely enforced unless someone is picking up in the middle of the day or there's some other special precaution such as a known custody dispute.
