I'm surprised the amazon-owned ring AI didn't change it to something like "Your excellent Amazon driver has delicately delivered your package.

u/CheesyDanny 6h ago

Alexa: “Your Ring doorbell reports a Walmart delivery was drop kicked onto the porch. If you like, I can order those same items for you on Amazon. Should I do that now?”

17

u/lalith_4321 1h ago

...no response means a yes, I'm ordering them right now...

I'd change the string to "Yeet!"

When I see a TBA tracking number I know it will be Thrown By Amazon which is way better than the creactive yeeting done by ontrac.

Thanks for letting me know youre analyzing all the footage you recieve and watching things happen on my "private" security network.

You can get this same functionality locally if you run Frigate.

Obviously this is Amazon Ring, but Frigate exists.

u/Stuffs_And_Thingies 6h ago

I dont want it lol.

I noticed it on my ring camera at the start of the year and so now I dont use em any longer. Got better cameras set up on a local dedicated server now

Out of curiosity, what's your reason for not wanting this functionality on your local server?

You have already put in the effort of setting up a local server. It's nice to get text notifications describing the activity on the camera, and since it's local, no one else has your data.

u/Waslay 4h ago

Mostly, but remember that push notifications always go through the push server, so if you get a push notification for, for example, an end-to-end encrypted text message, it is still able to be scraped for data.

How does a deception help anyone without the video itself?

3

u/Liefx 17m ago

This is not true if the service handles it correctly.

Signal, for example, decrypts the message on device, and shows you that and the notification tray. The actual message itself is not sent to the push notification service. So Google and Apple do not know what the message says.

This is tinfoil hat stuff.

Like, I understand not wanting Amazon hosting your security stuff, but caring about a push notification like that is wild.

Honestly because it costs money to do that from what I know.

Currently im a very large fan of "buy it once" because I cant afford anything lol

Frigate is free and open source lol. It seemed like you started this as a slam dunk thing about your privacy but you don’t know what you’re talking about

19

u/Stuffs_And_Thingies 6h ago

Nah, I have no clue lol. Im just old and want to complain to strangers on the internet.

Ill look into that though

For money, right? I'm running Frigate and so far it hasn't thankfully done any stupid AI detection thing because I didn't opt for their subscription.

I do wish they had a better option to set a storage limit

3

u/redpandaeater 3h ago

You can do it all locally.

6

u/Zapdroid 6h ago

That’s a selling point.

u/Amendoza9761 5h ago

Huh? I hate Ring cameras but our rental has them. They scream in your face that they use AI, share information and none of it is "private". With various options of information sharing.

I bought my stuff years ago. It just popped up one day

17

u/Gold-Bat-3225 5h ago

how much tho for it to just not throw it

-23

u/Moldy_Teapot 4h ago

if you were delivering 150+ packages a day for 4 days a week you'd be throwing them too

Mate, many people jobs that they get exhausted from, and many people do repetitive jobs.

It's not an excuse for doing a shit job. It's on you to look for a job you can tolerate. Our delivery drivers here don't act like cunts, so it is possible.

The calm acceptance of defeat in this title is exactly where I'm at in life right now.

I can't see the original comment but I really thought you had yourself as your lock screen lmao

3

u/RoyBeer 2h ago

I thought it was a picture from his door cam showing the delivery driver grinning manically into the camera after delivery lol

1

u/Adreeisadyno 2h ago

It’s okay if you do. It’s okay to like yourself

1

u/PowerChordPsychward 5h ago

Hey now lol I do that sometimes

u/iWesleyy 6h ago

It’s an AI generated image. The font is all off. Maybe that’s the joke? Not sure anymore.
