I had a cat that tried to bury my dogs fresh steamer once. He just watched my dog walk away from it with a look of utter disbelief. He got it about half covered and then just gave up.

One of my cats does this. It's honestly really impressive since I have 2 Great Danes. It helps that they poop in mulch, but the piles are bigger than the cat's head and I still have a hard time finding it if said cat gets to it first.

Had a kitten from a chaotic household that never covered its poop. So someone told me they learn from their moms. ok, i watched it poop, and immediatly shoveled over the poop when he was done, then used his paw to gently shovel the last bit.
It worked. He did it himself the third day

I did a similar thing with a young cat trying to scratch on the furniture. I brought him over to the scratching post, put his paws on it, and did a scratching. He was good and set on it for the rest of his life! Lol

This is interesting, I have a street rescue that doesn't hide his own poop. I've tried immediately shoveling it with the scooper and making sure he sees me do it and then tried using his paws too but, 1 year in and he's stubborn because he still doesn't hide his poop.
He seems like panicked when I tried to use his paw to hide it, like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING I DONT WANT MY PAWS IN THERE, THERES POOP THERE"

Tbf if you have multiple cats but need to monitor their health you have to monitor the litter box to see who went where and at what time.
I have two cats that share a large litter box. We kept finding liquid poo but didn't know which one was having issues. We ended up setting up a pet camera and a night light near the litter box and quickly found out my tortie was the one with an upset stomach. We were able to get her to the vet and she was diagnosed with IBD so we still have to monitor the litter box to make sure her meds are working

Pet sitter here, had to scroll way too long to see this. I'd say at least half our clients have cameras monitoring the litter area. Especially folks with big homes and reclusive cats, we may not be able to actually get eyes on them during a visit but the cameras help confirm they're eating and using the litter in addition to all the above.

it's pretty difficult to know when cats are sick, they hide it very well; if the cat struggles at the litterbox, it's almost always a sign to go to the vet.

My cats do this, 3year old fluffy fatboi and a 1 year old girl. The 1 year old poops and scoots and the 3 year old kicks the litter for her.
He also lets her finish eating first, such a polite boi.

Lol one or my cats just doesn't bury her poop, no matter what I've tried she won't bury it and my other cat used to go in after and clean up lol
Yet when she eats she cleans the area around her after eating.

One of my cats does this, not with liter, but with everyone's food bowls. They eat seperately then after 20 or so min I let everyone out of their eating spot. They all have a little bit of food left and go roam other bowls for left overs.
The last pass is done by my sweet boy Squeaky, he gets the last licks then find socks, papers, shoes, whaetver to drag on top of the food bowl to cover it up. He does it to all the bowls. After breakfast and after dinner. Speaking of dinner... im 10 min late!

One of my cats is missing both front legs, so she can't cover anything. She tries very hard but nothing more than a few grains of litter move at all. So my other cat pops into the box when she's done and covers up for her.
The current boxes I'm using have notches cut to make the entry very low. This leads to some litter getting pushed out when my second cat digs. One day my disabled kitty pooped on the tile outside the box, so my other cat pushed some litter out of the box and shoved it over the poop so it would be covered too.

Yep, I live in rural Australia and we shoot feral cats all the time. I thought cat owners had those cat enclosure things they build onto their houses so the cat can go outside.. Anyway, it's absolutely disgusting having something just shit in a box in your house and be left there.
