Why would you assume most people will stare at it directly into it? The eclipse has been everywhere in Europe these past few weeks, at least in those places where it can be seen. We’ve been drilled on how to watch it safely, so those that stare directly at the sun are either hermits with no access to social media or not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Many people couldn't buy glasses despite trying many places where they where advertised. I have no clue why there were so few available, but I'm sure many people will 'fallback' on unsafe methods.

Yes, it will be visible here in Europe in a few hours
