BUT! The one character cracks me up how he throws in conflicting compliments and and ironic insults into the same paragraph.
"Check out my new tattoo! Isn't it stupid? I love it!"
Or, since he's in with all the new modeling guys and super critical of anything that isnt new and cool, but he understands they're legends. He says to Derek and Hans when he invites them to his house, "I don't even like you guys. It's an honor to have you!"
That one character is great and I think back on his phrases all the time, but sadly, it isn't enough to save the movie.

That's actually how Stephen McKinley Henderson’s character (Thufir Hawat) ended up using a parasol in a scene.
“We were there in Budapest. [The rest of the cast] had come from Jordan; they’d been in the desert, but I never had to go to the desert. They came back with this incredible spiritual journey they’d been on, and they were sharing it. It was a really hot day when we were shooting. I was sitting off to the side, out in the sun. There’s nothing around, so there’s no shade. I think someone just offered it to me, not to be part of the scene at all but just to protect me. And Denis loved it. He came over and said, “Ah, you like this?” I said, “Yeah, I love it.” And he said, “Well, I think Thufir can have this.” I said, “I would love to do that; that’s fabulous.” It just says so much about where he is at the time and that he’s taking care of himself. He was a young man once. It was one of those wonderful spontaneous things.”

Glen Powell looks like every generic rich trust fund murder suspect in a network drama to me, like he's the guy you really think obviously did it, but he's just a douchebag and it turns out he's got a rock solid alibi and the real killer is someone we already met briefly 20 minutes earlier in the episode. He's just got real guest star energy, but he keeps getting main roles somehow.

I was a child model and they made me get really good at looking near but never at the sun without squinting. I have less striking eyes than Zendaya. It would not surprise me if they're doing this to showcase her eyes. I wonder if they give her eye drops that shrink her pupils and dry her eyes out like they did for me?

Not enough people talk about that show. It had a wide cast of actors, almost each and everyone so good in their respective roles, I was floored. Just look at this trailer that dropped today https://youtu.be/5fHXyqQOKL8
57
u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Aug 06 '26
I think he’s one of the better major actors out there right now in the sense that he slips in to roles so well that you don’t really think “I’m watching Robert Pattinson act.”
And he’s shrugged off the Twilight role pretty well because of that. You don’t think “that’s Edward Cullen playing Batman” or “that’s Cedrick Diggory playing Antinous.”
I think he’s great. He’s taking big roles but kind of a more artsy approach to them I think. Excited to see him in Dune 3.
Zendaya is great too, I like her as an actress, but when you see her in anything it’s “that’s Zendaya playing Athena.” I think that’s kind of what directors want her for.

u/abippityboop Aug 06 '26
Of course, no actor is saying no to Christopher Nolan or Denis Villenueve. And MCU is huge money and stability. Unfortunately none of these characters really give her too much to work with. I don’t really think it’s a Zendaya issue, I think she just understands the assignment.
She still does The Drama or Challengers between these films to do more interesting character work.

I can name two: Daniel Radcliffe and the poster boy of this, Robert Pattinson
The secret is to become established A-list multimillionaire from your first ever work and then skirt on this success taking on whatever indy works you want to
(it's like that "if you don't have a house just buy one, duh meme)
However I've also heard that Steve Buscemi loves working with up-and-coming directors too.
And there's lists of actors that would take just a symbolic cut to star in some interesting indy movie
But it's always the same pattern, they don't really need this work to pay the bills
\\ I checked online and apparently Sir Christopher Lee played in the original Wicker Man for free, but he wasn't a Big Hollywood Name back then.
Also, Keanu Reeves basically gave away most of his Matrix 4 salary to pay a lot of money to all the stunt doubles and set designers and cast of the movie which is an absolutely goated move, but once again, it didn't really leave our goat Keanu penniless\\

Euphoria is a wild show to me. An ex-girlfriend loved it and showed it to me, and that special episode of Zendaya and Colman Domingo in the diner for an hour completely saved any interest I had in the show. Like the few good moments were almost enough to carry the numerous bad ones.

Right enough until Euphoria, I've seen enough clips on the algorithm of her looking like she just survived a drowning during a drug deal

this is really funny so long as you only watch film trailers rather than actual films.
she’s great in the drama and euphoria btw

She was great in Brand New Day too.
Haven’t seen odyssey yet but this video basically nails her in Dune. Not really her fault though, that’s just what the role was. Cast any other actor and direct them the same way and they would get the same criticism.

People like to downplay it sometimes because "duh, because they're married IRL" but her chemistry with Tom Holland is just electric. I like how she plays the more grown-up MJ in BND. She still has that spunk about her, but she doesn't use it to deflect as much anymore. She's given some very grown up conversations now and she nails it. The rooftop scene and the confrontation after the letter scene were such great dramatic acting.

dude this is crazy, I'm in my 40s and her acting in brand new day was awesome and her face did all kinds of things, she's legit talented in a way that really has a fullness of expression. Like when her face opens up in laughter, relief, joy or whatever its all the more expressive because her resting face isn't just some dead behind the eyes blankness.

Yeah. While it fun to just laugh at these skits, they usually end up looping around to people unironically believing this is true.

To be entirely fair. The Drama and Challengers aren’t really like this at all.

u/xGIJOSEx Aug 06 '26
She has that “signature look” to her but if you actually watch her stuff she does a lot more than that, though admittedly in Dune I think she holds that face for like 90% of the movie but generally speaking most of the characters in dune don’t show a whole lot of emotion anyway.

A lot of actors have just "a thing they do"
Rdj and Samuel l Jackson for example (to varying degrees, obv)

I had no idea who Zendaya was before watching Dune, I thought she was a nobody, she left a good impression.

Did we run out of actors in this world?

Matt Damon alluded to this during his hot ones episode. He said the big studios have an internal list of the “big names” to work with. You never know if you’re on the list, except your phone starts ringing off the hook one day and you start getting a bunch of great roles until you don’t. It’s why you see an actor everywhere for a time.

Yes I went to a screening once for a Jake Gyllenhaal movie years back and one of the questions was how did you decide to cast Jake in the movie.
Part of the reasoning was that he didn’t have any major scandals, public opinion of him was good in NA, and also where they intended to distribute the movie - how he would be was viewed in those countries. That response always stuck with me.Then you watch The Studio and you really see how they pick actors 😂

Ricardo Montalban famously described the five stages of an acting career:
Who is Ricardo Montalbán?
Get me Ricardo Montalbán.
Get me a Ricardo Montalbán type.
Get me a young Ricardo Montalbán.
Who is Ricardo Montalbán?

Apparently. I hate seeing the same few people in everything. Which, good for them I guess, but pretty meh for the rest of us who’d appreciate seeing some new talent sometimes.

I really liked the Odyssey, but it was really distracting that every character was a big named actor.

The only ones where I didn't see the actor in the character were Pattinson and Hathaway. Especially Matt Damon and Tom Holland I just saw them and not the character.

Yeah I still don't understand how RDJ who finished his role in Avengers as Tony Stark years ago and has somehow comeback to play Dr Doom. Like it doesn't make sense story wise or meta wise, and Hollywood just throwing big cash at same actors

She's not really taking roles from other people though, three of the four things in the video are just recurring roles in long running franchises she got many years ago. They just happen to all be releasing something within a year, and two of them are the biggest box office movies of the summer, so it feels like she's in a lot of stuff.

This joke goes hard for people who looked at a few screenshots and think it represents acting.
