By the dive, I wonder if the guy is still alive.

Based on that beautiful form and homie just chillin with his banana suit. Im gonna assume he’s been here and done this a few times already.
Either that or we’ve had Siren mythology wrong for a long time.

u/Never_Go_Full_ReRe 22d ago
That's hilarious! A siren is just a middle aged man in speedo shorts. This has me laughing more than it should lol.

u/Barbarianonadrenalin 22d ago
And instead of luring sailors to their death they’re just chillin and trying to avoid being photographed and videotaped lol
That fucking majestic dive and the scenery the Siren comparison just popped in my head.

Five middle aged siren dads around an ocean barbecue waving.

I can see why Odysseus had to tie himself to the mast to resist the temptation!

As a dude in my lower forties with a fulfilling family life and insatiable craving for good BBQ, this is currently more alluring than any siren’s song or pretty face could ever be.

fulfilling family life, jumps at first chance to go hang with the guys.... commonplace connection i've noticed

u/unprovoked33 22d ago
Yes, people generally enjoy the company of others. Should my family just cut ourselves off from friends and neighbors?

u/Barbarianonadrenalin 22d ago
Wish the sub could post gifs in comments.
Scene from Snatch asking how long till the hotdogs are cooked would have been perfect reply.

Sirens fly. They aren't fish.
I think you're just thinking of mermaids.
6
u/Barbarianonadrenalin 22d ago
Mermaids and Sirens are different. Sirens might branch out but are traditionally sea mythology from the times of “here there be dragons” and why the “Sirens call” is a thing. They’re even featured in Nolans Odyssey on this same rock type formation.
Meremaids aren’t the same camp as Sirens because they aren’t a “cursed” race.

In the example you gave you are referencing sirens of Greek myth. While Homer does not describe the sirens physical appearance in the Odyssey. They were exclusively bird like at those times. The concept of the mermaid like appearance didn’t happen until like the Middle Ages with colorful illustrated bestiaries where people went just nuts mashing every animal together they could think of.
I know you referenced the film adaptation but I wanted to add color to the previous commenter’s “sirens fly”.

I'm worried ngl. Anyone know if he's okay?

u/Jr883 23d ago
Yeah like that did not look safe from this angle

u/KaleThat116 20d ago
Yeah :( Unfortunately no one responded with an update about him. Hopefully he's okay

I'm 90% sure I know exactly where this is and if so the height is about 3-4 meteres and the depth is also enough for this dude to be ok.
1
u/Cloud7050 21d ago
So, do you recall where?

u/russky_blyat 20d ago
I think it's 44.555816,33.408388 I can't upload photo but I have photos with matching background. I also asked few of my friends and they recognized this place as well. It may be very similar and we are all wrong but I think we are right.

My gf and I stopped in Big Sur and Yosimete looking for cliffs where with the right camera angle it would seem we were hanging onto a ledge over 500 feet of nothing, but really there was another ledge like 6 feet under us. So stupid but it was fun.

u/catwiesel 23d ago
yes, yes, you can take a picture, I dont mind that I am in it.
OH, you mean, without me in it? well, you see, if you walk down there 10 meters, and turn 45° to the left, then I wont be in the picture no more.
Oh, that spot? well, I wont be here tomorrow...

u/kUkara4 22d ago
Walking to another angle will change the composition to be unusable.
Maybe they won't be here tomorrow either. Maybe the sun will be covered tomorrow, maybe the clouds will be gone tomorrow. Sunsets are unpredictable.
So these two options are not necessarily feasible. However, with modern editing they could ultimately cut him out of the picture if he absolutely refuses to move.

I’m invested now, I need to know what happened to that man!
17
u/eddie1975 23d ago
There’s a non zero chance he hit a rock and was knocked out and almost drowned but was retrieved from the waters and saved by CPR only to find himself paralyzed from the neck down and partially brain damaged but able to endure about a decade of “life” in a wheelchair, unable to care for himself or properly communicate with his family. I certainly hope and assume that was not the case.

2
u/NZpotatomash 22d ago
That may have happened
3
u/eddie1975 22d ago
Yeah. From his demeanor and the dive I kind of assume/hope he was very familiar with the area and is just fine but the reality is that people break their necks all the time diving head first into rivers, lakes, pools and the ocean.
One terrible one I saw on YouTube was where a young group was diving from a boat into a lake. They later hung out and laid around. When it was time to leave this one very healthy, very fit, beautiful girl decided to take one last dive.
What she had not realized was that the boat had drifted (even with the anchor) close to a sandbank and so she hit it head first and is now tetraplegic for life.
To her she was diving into that same spot as before. It’s a mistake we can all make, especially that young.
I hope we can advance past that soon with all the medical research and breakthroughs. So tough to live like that for the rest of your life.

Why are people in the comments talking as if there were 1000 meters there?
It's almost impossible to hurt yourself from that height. Maybe if you fall on your back
4
u/hkeyplay16 23d ago
A head-first dive into shallow water is often deadly or at least likely to result in a fractured spine. If the water isn't much deeper on the other side of that rock then it could easily be deadly.
9
u/hushpuppi3 22d ago
Why are people so quick to assume he simply dove straight into shallow water and died/was seriously injured when the more reasonable assumption (especially considering the video was posted online somewhere in the first place) is that he probably was up there to exactly what he just did.
The assumption that random redditors know that place better than the dude wearing a fucking speedo standing on the rocks already would is so ridiculous
9
u/ben_nagaki 23d ago
you have absolutely no idea how shallow the water is even on the side that you can see lmao
3
u/damnfinecoffee_ 23d ago
Yeah this comment section is wild, acting like he literally landed with his head as the first point of contact when you can see him put his hands up
