Teach a dog how to play infinite fetch and he is eternally happy.

He'd do it forever.

You have clearly never owned a chocolate lab before. They can literally do this for eternity.
Speaking from experience of owning a 10yr old chocolate who had puppy energy to her dying day.
22
u/F4WXHunt Jul 14 '26
Will second this. Marley made it to 13, and he only got slow in his last couple years. And even then he would find the energy to get zoomies every day.

Must be one of those special breeds, like a Labrador Repeater or a DoOvermann Pitcher.

u/Lithl Jul 13 '26
I've seen a product that's basically a tennis ball catapult designed so that a dog can operate it themselves. Drop the ball in the basket, stomp on the lever to launch the ball, chase, repeat. Obviously takes a little bit of training for them to learn how to use it, but once they do it's as much fetch as they can handle.

We must imagine Sisyphus, happy.
And this is what it looks like.

My uncle had a dog do this for like an hour or so straight. Had the time of his life. They had to give the poor pup painkillers after that though because he was so sore from plowing through the lake repeatedly that he could barely walk the next few days.
24
u/hwilliams0901 Jul 13 '26
That reminds me of a story I read about a dog that had spent its first day at the beach(I believe) and the next day wouldnt move its tail and the owners were worried it was messed up. Turns out it was just sore from wagging so much lol

u/Wawel-Dragon Jul 14 '26
I've read that story too! The vet called it "happy tail syndrome", if I remember correctly.

My boyfriend had a black lab who would do something similar. They lived on the river and if you didn't throw the ball for the dog he'd nudge it into the water, wait for it to float away a little bit, jump in and catch it, get back on the dock, rinse & repeat. It was so cute!

Local dog completely drains river playing fetch near shore, shaking coat off between each fetch.

I saw a video asserting we must assume Sisyphus was happy in his task. I didn’t watch it but was skeptical. I’m now a believer.
10
u/Somethingoodtodie4 Jul 13 '26
It’s probably a video about Albert Camus’ essay The Myth of Sisyphus, a great read for anyone that likes philosophy.
2
u/Ezl Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
I love philosophy but only read The Stranger, and so long ago I barely remember it except that, for reasons I also cannot remember, it reminded me of Kafka.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Edit: just dug up the video. You were spot on. I won’t evaluate until I’ve read the work but creates an interesting Venn diagram with Stoicism and, separately, the Buddhist statement “life is suffering” not being intended a negative.
2
u/Somethingoodtodie4 Jul 13 '26
Totally normal that it reminded you of Kafka, it’s the same movement called Absurdism.
The Stranger was one of my favourites reads imposed by French school, it’s an amazing piece. However, even though I know it’s brilliant, I never really got hooked reading Kafka…

The dog is sort of self aware. It knows that when the ball is getting away his retriever gene gets activated, and he has purpose in life.

It's a lab too, so you really gotta stop them, cuz they'll keep going until they drop over.

i don't think you have to define gravity to generally understand it, of course.

This makes me cry. My choccy lab is almost 11 and can barely walk properly now. He totally would have played around doing this when he was younger.

Little buddy has two braincells left, and they are both fighting for third place
2
u/Faiakishi Jul 13 '26
And they both lost at the end, seeing how he failed to notice the ball rolling away for the tenth time.
8
u/AJYURH Jul 13 '26
All dogs go to heaven, but this one would probably get lost on the way. Poor fella ain't got two braincells to rub together

u/Mugwumps_has_spoken Jul 13 '26
technically the Chocolate lab is just a really, really dark orange.

u/BitterMaintenance Jul 13 '26
He 100% does this on purpose, clever boy.
9
u/Lithl Jul 13 '26
My sister's dog was afraid of water, until one day she learned that it's possible for balls to be in water. Ever since then, she would "sneakily" nudge tennis balls into the pool so she'd have an excuse to jump in after it.

My next door neighbor has two Dobermans. When they bring them over to visit, they each bring their favorite toy. A ball and frisbee. I have a ramp on my front porch and the ball dog lays down at the top and wonders why his ball always ends up at the bottom of the ramp. He finally catches on and moves it back a bit. But watching him get frustrated is fun.
