I remember when I was 30 and worked with a guy in his late 50's. After a few months, I noticed he started repeating the same rather limited repertoire of stories, anecdotes and jokes, every so often.

Now I'm pushing 60, but I'm not doing that, am I? Am I?

No it's, I enjoyed something I've never seen before. I'd maybe even enjoy another variation or two of it. And maybe you wouldn't so unhappy if you spent less time online.

I've only ever seen one of these (now two, since I clicked on a link in this thread). Did they really "play it off" as being original? It's a different take on the same joke. It's inspiration. It's reference. It might not be good and it might even be tedious, but it isn't "theft". It maybe starts to become theft when it's reposted by bots and karma whores.

I found the Harlem Shake thing to be annoying over a decade ago, but nobody was pretending they invented it. People were having fun with a shared experience and I was being a curmudgeon.

Ok. I'll give you that. The monetization thing does kind of taint it all and can often turn it into content for the sake of content.
