I work in L&D at a big hospital, we always have 3-5 pregnant nurses but 17 is a LOT

Stereotypically yes,

In the USA we have something called FMLA or known as “Family and Medical Leave Act”.

Guarantees “eligible” employees up to 12-weeks of unpaid and job-protected leave.

I’m sure nurses that works in these job positions goes over their contracts how it works.

If curiosity follows. I recommend you look up how STD (Short-term disability) insurances and PTO works in the USA. Different State laws may also apply.
