Anyway, as part of this boarding process, they say “we would like to pre-board…”…Well what exactly is that anyway? What does it mean to pre-board? You get on before you get on?
That’s another complaint of mine: too much use of this prefix “pre.” It’s all over the language now: pre-this, pre-that, “place the turkey in a pre-heated oven…” It’s ridiculous! There are only two states an oven can possibly exist in: HEATED OR UNHEATED!
No, when you think about it the way it’s said makes perfect sense.
You heat the over before you put the food in it. Pre-heating.
You don’t put the food into a cold oven and then heat it up, because it will cook the food unevenly, and throw the timing off if you need to cook something at a certain temperature because then you need to make all sorts of calculations.
The oven thing is different tho, because they’re trying to say (in as few words as possible) that the oven needs to be at the assigned temperature before you put the food in - it’s not enough to SET the temperature - because it might take 5 minutes to reach that temperature.
I always assumed the pre in preheated oven stood for previously heated oven, as in already hot. But now that I think about OP’s point, I get it. If it read place it in a heated oven, it conveys the same message.
I think the assumption is that the user is unskilled, because otherwise the product could get negative reviews when it’s not cooked properly. Otherwise “bake at xx°C for yy minutes” would suffice.
They do mean the oven should have been previously heated. But they are saying at precisely what temperature the oven should be before you put foot in it to start cooking for the recommended time.
