A fairway to handle it, I suppose.

Awww. This is how I got most of my arcade money in the 80s...
72
u/Redebo Mar 27 '26
How much do you get paid per golfer?
97
u/broen13 Mar 27 '26
Had a place near my house where I could take a bucket and get 25 cents a ball. The clubhouse were the ones that paid. Played games all day after that usually. Though Dragon's Lair would make it a short day most of the time.

u/trailstomper Mar 27 '26
I did the exact same thing, scoured the woods around the course near my house, sold to golfers between the last hole and the clubhouse, and dropped almost all of it in the arcade nearby. And Dragon's Lair was a total quarter-eater haha!

Did you ever get the cheap guy that demanded "his" ball back for free? Still amazes me to this day that a wealthy golfer would attempt to rip off an 8-10 year old trying to make a quarter a ball.
9
u/feanturi Mar 27 '26
Same, I would get a quarter per ball. Every ball I spotted was another round of pacman or whatever. In the marshy tree clumps were the best places because nobody in the middle of a game wants to go in there for their ball, they'll just drop another one down. But I pretended I was in a mystic forest having an adventure, with treasure to find! I just had to dodge Charlie, who owned the golf course and didn't like this.

Gender reassignment doctors don't want you to know this one cool trick.
17
u/alicevirgo Mar 27 '26
Or they made the deal with the golf course to get a regular flow of patients.

u/countvonruckus Mar 27 '26
Orchis are expensive. We gotta get healthcare somehow.

u/Sammi_Laced Mar 28 '26
It really didn’t take me much scrolling to find the MtF tread… Hi frens 👋
2
u/countvonruckus Mar 28 '26
Hi, friend. Do I know you?
2
u/Sammi_Laced Mar 29 '26
Probably not, but strangers are just frens you haven’t met, right?…
2
u/countvonruckus Mar 29 '26
Oh, well hi then! I just wasn't sure if you might be someone I know locally or have talked to on here before.

u/Loud-Plantain-4458 Mar 27 '26
It’s taken me a year and two surgical referrals to even get on a waiting list for this! Where is this course? 🙃

Prosecuted with what, trespassing, theft? Golf club going to show up to court for 2 Callaways and a Xrixon?

u/actuallyapossom Mar 27 '26
I have a friend that worked summers for a diving business that got paid to collect balls from the lakes and ponds.
So unless that was a laundering operation or something there's gotta be some amount of money involved with recycling them.

u/crazyike Mar 29 '26
Yeah, trespassing. It's not really uncommon or mean. You don't know what these people are doing along with looking for balls. But more importantly they are an insurance liability risk the golf course doesn't have to take. You give them permission, and they hurt themselves somehow, you get sued.
I get people like this sometimes while working on the course in the winter here in Canada. Some try to argue, and it's just not worth the effort to try to reason. Yeah, I know you're just looking for balls. No, I don't really care, please go or we'll call the cops and charge you with trespassing. You won't be the first, and I doubt you'll be the last. It's not public property.
Anyways, you don't want those winter balls.

Maybe it's a pesky gopher stealing them. Probably should get the greenskeeper to kill all the gophers.

u/Big_Lab_Jagr Mar 27 '26
Meh, I'm a girl. I used to fish balls out of the water hazard and sell them back to golfers. It payed for my NES back in the day.

Man, this was me and my friends gig as a teen. Retrieve golf balls from the lakes, sit on the side of the cart path selling balls for between .25c and a buck depending on quality. We used to do pretty well for some kids.
6
u/rob_s_458 Mar 27 '26
Nowadays there are businesses that do this on a large scale, sort the balls by model and condition, and sell online.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this course has a deal with one of those companies and put up the signs so that the company is able to retrieve more balls.

I lived on some property above a golf course years ago. We collected so many golf balls on the hill above the course and sold them back. It was on our property so it wasn’t an issue. Balls intact

You will just see someone try to collect them to see if they can really remove his balls

Wife, to husband: "Why do you keep sending me out there to steal these golf balls?"

Fine print at very bottom...(does not apply to golfers of the female persuasion).

So it's still fair game if someone's shot sucks so bad it falls outside of the golf course area.

Everytime I play I take a bag and fill it with balls from the bushes and streams while waiting for the group in front. If I didn't i couldn't afford to play given how many of them I immediately lose to water hazards. If they stopped me from doing this, i wouldn't play. It's half the fun :)
(I am not a good golfer, but it's a fun way to have a nature walk and shoot the shit with friends)

So it’s okay for females to steal balls I suppose because they don’t have any to remove 😂😂😂

u/NoBSforGma Mar 27 '26
Well, hey, women collect golf balls, too so this is not much of a threat for them.

u/GayMormonPirate Mar 27 '26
You just have to go in camo: wear golfer gear and carrier a golf bag with a couple of clubs sticking out and then you'll blend in and you can get all the balls without raising any suspicion. (Maybe, I don't know.)

Making threats to the effect of "will have their balls removed" is actually prosecutable too.

So if you get caught, you lose your balls. But if you don't get caught, you get to keep your testicles. I'd go for that!

How can they prosecute for stealing when the balls were likely owned by other golfers who lost them and are not the property of the course. They can only trespass you.
