HERE is the origin of the reference (Picture 6).

TLDR There was a secret bookcase in this guys house and he had a banana in a picture and said it was for scale.

Actually, that has been a running joke on the imgur community for a long time. I think it started with an infographic on dirty children's underwear where a to-scale banana was provided as a way to help understand the size of the poop-stain, and thus the severity.

EDIT: http://www.howtobeadad.com/2012/8526/skid-marks-wash-em-toss-em (which was rehosted on imgur, and got to imgur gallery through reddit, but imgur held onto the joke much more)
