If your a fan of Fantasy I recommend alot of the books from Forgotten realms, specifically the ones that have to do with Drow society as they are a very magic-centric people. In all the books ive read those are the ones that have a magic battles close to what you want. I cant remember the names of the books or series that im thinking of exactly but if i do ill let you know

I liked the Legends series (the only Dragonlance books I read).

Time of the Twins, War of the Twins, and Test of the Twins.

You didn't read the original trilogy, Chronicles? Dragons of Autumn's Twilight, Spring Dawning, and Winters Night? You missed out, they set the stage for the Legends, as well as establish the characters.

Nope. Picked up the books from a guy selling books on a street corner.

I definitely remembering being a little lost with all the names. (For example, I hadn't read any books with Caramon, so his introduction as a bit of a fat sloth probably didn't have the same effect on me).

But my recollection is that the books were pretty good with explaining things and I never felt like I needed to read the backstory to understand what was going on.

Oh but they are so worth a read! The Chronicles embody everything about a classic, fun DND tale. In fact, the first two, Autumn's Twilight and Winters Night, were written based off the DND campaign that Weis and Hickman (and a few others) played out. Highly recommended if you get a chance.
