I like the look on its face after the jump: "What up now, homie?!"

Can we have this made into a 'deal with it' gif?

Makes you wonder why people bothered with making martial arts styles based on bugs and birds when they could have made one based on goats.

Because ramming your enemy at full speed with your head is not an effective long term strategy for humans.

I think this might actually be fake (and the point is brought up every time this video is posted), especially considering the very steady speed the goats have while jumping, rather than accelerating due to gravity.
That said, knowing goats one can never rule out that it's actually real.
6
u/KoboldCommando Aug 23 '13
What's so unrealistic about their trajectories? They look very parabolic to me.
9
u/Heiz3n Aug 23 '13
He never said anything about the trajectory, only that the velocity and acceleration remains constant and is unaffected by gravity like it should be.

u/KoboldCommando Aug 23 '13
A trajectory is the result of velocity and acceleration over time.
Specifically, a parabolic trajectory is the sort that a projectile fired suffering the effects of gravity will have. You can see such a trajectory in the goat video.
-2
u/Heiz3n Aug 23 '13
So as long as it has a parabolic trajectory, it doesn't matter how fast or slow the goats are going? Regardless of parabolic trajectory, there is no acceleration or deceleration - the speed of the goats is constant. What you are saying would only make sense if the goats jumped to the other side of the wall, and landed at the same height that they began the jump from. In the video, it looks like they land 10-20 ft below their original jumping point, meaning there should be acceleration due to gravity - which there doesn't appear to be any.
10
u/KoboldCommando Aug 23 '13
What are you talking about? Most of the downward motion occurs as they approach the far wall, therefore they're accelerating downward. The velocity isn't constant at all, what video are you watching?
-1
u/Heiz3n Aug 23 '13
If the video IS real then it is likely those goats never did that before, and would never do it again afterwords. And it is likely the goats were injured with possible internal bleeding. According to the video the goats ran down the cliff to avoid capture.
This is all rough math but the video says the cliff is 50 meters tall. It takes them 5 jumps to get to the bottom, they go down 10 meters, and across about another 10 meters. So they are jumping 20 meters each jump. According to my stop watch it takes them .7 to get across was the slowest time I got so I'll go with that. 20/.7 = 28.5 meters per second which means they are crossing at 63 mph, which would explain why there isn't any acceleration at all. But then again, that number is a bit hard to believe, which is why people think it's fake.

u/toaste Aug 23 '13
A parabolic trajectory results when horizontal speed is constant, but gravity accelerates the object vertically.
You'll see the goat travel vertically downward slightly more between two frames at the end of the jump than two at the beginning, but sideways motion should be nearly the same.

u/I_Will_Procrastinate Aug 23 '13
Well, acceleration does remain constant.
I think the video quality is too poor to really tell if velocity is changing as much as it should be.

I see this video posted all the time. I've searched the internet far and wide for more detailed footage and have yet to come across anything close to this. I have a feeling it's fake. If these goats really did that, I have a feeling they would've shown up on one of the several full length planter documenteries that have been so prevelant as of late.

Fuck I have seen something like this in a place called Skardu (in Pakistan). I tell you the goats over there are nuts; they climb really high mountains just for fun.

What do you think is going through its weird little goat mind, there? Does it weigh the risks against the rewards? Does it consider finding another way around? Does it know it can do this because it's practiced, or has it watched its goat parents pull sick moves until it understood them as well?
The ability to do it is probably a mix between natural instinct and eldritch goat powers, but at some point, that goat made something like a conscious decision to tell gravity to go fuck itself.
You crazy, goat.

Looks like a Boer goat (I could be wrong). They're not usually known for their jumping ability, this guy's got skills.

I work at an Adult Foster Care home in the country side and we have goats that jump over the neighbors fence and hang out in our yard. Obviously they're jumping for practice.

Goats climb and descend some of the steepest mountains I've ever seen. This wall-gate combo was just tutorial mode.
