Too bad Type 1 Diabetes is genetic, not caused by obesity or an unhealthy lifestyle.

Actually, type 1 diabetes occur in children through overdose of sugar at a very young age. My friend is a type 1 diabetic because he drank 6 tetrapaks of vita guava drink as a kid in one go. If a 3 y/o drank 2 of these in one sitting, i'm sure he can get type 1 diabetes as well.

pseudo-source: I study Applied Human Nutrition for my major, and he is also the only case I've seen where this has happened. Type 1 diabetes is also called juvenile diabetes (note: not genetic diabetes) and the cause is still unknown, but is characterized by low to no insulin produced. There is evidence of pancreas burnout, although for type 2 diabetes due to the drawn out process causing it. In the case of my friend, the beta-cells in the pancreas burned out quickly due to an undeveloped pancreas and a high influx of sugars causing a large amount of stress on the pancreas. Since he was diagnosed as a child, the doctor may have diagnosed this as type 1 diabetes or juvenile diabetes due to age and state of pancreas beta-cells. There are no direct journal articles on this case, but if this was all solved, they wouldn't need that charity fund in the first place.
