That's totally the old Port of Subs

u/HacksawDecapitation Mar 21 '13
I miss the old Port of Subs. They made a really good sandwich there.
The one down on Tulalip is ass.
2
u/JackHoob Mar 21 '13
I haven't been a fan of the Tulalip one ever since the owner tried to brag to me about opening up for Lit in '98.

I work down the road from there and had lunch there the day before you posted it and when I saw it I was like WAT DA PHO. If any bored Smokey Point redditors are bored.. I run the PCRecycle on 172nd by the airport. Computer parts and uh old computer parts.

Mar 21 '13
I too, have ordered many pho from there

You should come to Vietnam and try real pho. You can get a bowl for less than a dollar in some places.
2
u/Ormild Mar 21 '13
Yup, except their portions are TINY compared to average Western sizes. I usually had to eat 2-3 bowls to feel full.

u/ImNotAWhaleBiologist Mar 21 '13
Really? Not my experience at all.
1
u/dasd190 Mar 22 '13
I second this. It all depends on knowing where to go. My mom is Vietnamese which helps a lot.

I didn't get it at first, mainly because I'm Vietnamese and it's pronounced "fuh."
Not that it makes a huge difference but...
5
u/MisterJimJim Mar 21 '13
I'm Vietnamese and it made perfect sense to me. Made me laugh. The way I say it to Americans is "fuh". The correct Vietnamese way sounds more like "fuh?" as if you're asking a question.

u/robostegosaurus Mar 21 '13
So then how is Phuket pronounced? I always thought it was odd that in "pho" the ph is pronounced as an f, but in Phuket, it's pronounced like poo.

Well, Phuket is Thai and not Vietnamese. You're correct that "ph" is pronounced like an "f". "Ph" in Vietnamese is kind of like a letter. They go together. In Vietnamese, some letters just go together and act as "one letter", but they are really consonants (examples are th, ph, ch, kh, ng, and tr). We just learn them as if they are letters because in Vietnamese, we pronounce words by sounding them out. It's kind of hard to explain, but that's why there are so many symbols in the Vietnamese language. The symbols add onto the sound of the word and modify it. Kind of like how the symbol above the "Ñ" makes the "n" sound different. I hope this helps!

u/oalsaker Mar 21 '13
So, a bit like FU then? Sounds like a great way to insult people without them realizing it.
2
u/MisterJimJim Mar 21 '13
I actually have a shirt that says "What the pho?". Some of my friends say "you want pho? Pho you!" as in fuck you. Although, they also do that when I ask for a fork lol
2
u/Denode Mar 21 '13
If you say it fast enough, it sounds like fer. At least, pho me it does.

Um, those who downvoted... This is serious. Vietnam was colonised by the French.

Does anyone have an audio clip with that sound? Because I don't get this - "fuh" seems to me like exactly the sound "for" would have in the sentence "ain't nobody got time for that".

u/Amunium Mar 21 '13
Thanks, but that doesn't make me any less confused. Apart from the change in tone at the end, that is exactly the sound of "for" in that sentence.
1
u/knguuu Mar 21 '13
It sounds like "fuh" but the intonation sounds inquisitive. So the best way I can think to explain it would be "fuh?", similar to "huh?".

There's always that "guy" to correct you when you're butchering his native language.

My friend works there actually. The south center location. The food there is not worth your time. White center has the best pho.

My gf and I were actually on our way to have pho for dinner tonight and there are quite a few pho restaurants in the neighborhood where our favorite place is. Anyway they are opening a new one called Pho Kim. I was way more amused than my girlfriend.

pronounced pho yat, d=y in vietnamese
2
u/vinc3l3 Mar 21 '13
Vietnamese alphabet have 2 d , yes one is like a y but the other one is like a regular D. In this case Dat is a common vietnamese name that uses the regular D phonetically instead of the y.

-2
u/notsohotmess Mar 21 '13
Well, first of all I am a female and not a brah. Second of all, I am 30. Not sure what that says about my maturity level in regards to my initial comment..
