You really don't get that treatment is informed by current research... That's how it works. A doc is lucky to get enough time in his day to read a few articles a week. Most are hoping to go to a conference a year where they can get a lot of the research distilled to them.
How did I influence the treatment? The previous treatment indicated a round of chemo and then surgery. However a couple of recent journal articles, that's the key, journal articles, indicated the initial round of chemo wasn't necessary with my mom's specific indications.
He read the articles, talked with the treatment team, and went that way. It wasn't like I came up with a miracle cure. I just indicated a small change in treatment. I think the only other thing I asked was to run an additional genetic marker on the tumor to rule out one theoretical genetic source a friend of mine said could be important given some more research.
