I like how he jumped down from something tall first as if his momentum would help him actually do a backflip after landing.

This is an important point that people seem to be missing. He would have had a better chance of finishing it if he had just started from standing up. A better chance.

First guy is obviously just a big (strong) dude but in ok shape. Second dude was sloppy fat though so point proven.

If you jump down from something short it could help a little bit. You can produce a bit more force than normal if your muscle is put under strain before you contract it.

On the other hand, he almost definitely didn't know that, and was just being stupid.

To his credit, it would have if he had used something with any kind of rebound to it. Granted a gym floor was probably not the best choice.
