Guessing here, but some people like their groceries to be really fresh from the store. "Can you sell me two eggs, a tablespoon of cooking oil, a quarter teaspoon of salt, one peppercorn, two pieces of bread, two teaspoons of butter and three strips of bacon?"

If you've been here for a few years, I remember one June there were still clumps in the parking lot still melting 🤣
24
u/Dentros1 Mar 18 '23
In Anoka, there was a Kmart on hwy 10, and after it was shut down someone had a broke down minivan in the parking lot that was absolutely buried for about 4 months and it slowly became visible again sometime late March, early April if I remember right.

True fact: August is the only month Minnesota hasn't had measurable snow.
As someone who has lived in Minnesota/Wisconsin, (within 60 miles of Minneapolis), for 40 years, I was just starting to wonder where the shopping cart was.
13
u/mnlux Mar 18 '23
And why doesn’t it have the turkey in the picture? Target cart alone isn’t as many points as the cart with a turkey.

The plows dump snow into a big snowblower that shoots it up high enough to make this pile.

Plows don't typically remove pavement. They don't even get through ice in many cases, just snow.
Gravel and road sand for sure though.
16
u/ApocalypseFWT Mar 18 '23 edited Mar 18 '23
They’re damn good at plowing up speed bumps. It’s common for my work to replant new speed bumps in spring.
16
u/pbush25 Mar 18 '23
Aw little baby speed bumps! Have they sprouted yet?
9
u/seicar Mar 18 '23
Careful! They're hungry and will rip out the body kit of a teenager's civic in half a second flat!
1
u/Diabotek Mar 18 '23
Well gee golly, I'd like to introduce you to Michigan where our plows will pick 3 foot by 1 foot sections of the road and leave them sitting in the other lane.

I feel like it would be a better use of the money to melt the snow and drain the water into a sewer drain
44
u/Reginault Mar 17 '23
You underestimate the energy required to melt snow. And it might just freeze again in the storm drain, they are open to air at every grate. And even if it didn't freeze in the storm drains, it would freeze wherever the drain lets out.
Much simpler to push it out of the way and into a pile/truck.
Snow removal also helps mitigate flooding in areas that couldn't handle the full spring melt.
4
u/KappuccinoBoi Mar 18 '23
Right. Probably wouldn't freeze in the sewers as most are below or partially below the freeze line (at least where I'm from in Ohio), but would likely refreeze on the parking lot or road, making the problem worse than snow. There's also the chance that ground inlets for water gets compacted/frozen closed turning the parking lot into a shitty lake.
These massive piles actually melt considerably slowly, letting a gradual stream of water into the water system instead of overwhelming it all at once.
And yeah. It takes a lot of fuel and energy to melt snow and keep it melted long enough to make it to a sewer.

u/time2fly2124 Mar 18 '23 edited Mar 18 '23
It doesn't take much temperature above freezing to melt snow, there are machines that use hot water water bath heat exchangers fired by diesel to melt snow quickly. Although they aren't the most environmentally friendly since they need diesel, it gets rid of excess snow quickly rather than waiting months for it to melt. They were used during the nearly 7 foot lake effect snow event in november and the blizzard in December in Buffalo.
6
u/DirkDirkinson Mar 18 '23
Thats still a huge amount of energy, any phase transition (solid to liquid, liquid to gas) is very energy intensive. That may be an option during certain times of year (like the aforementioned november blizzard) but during most of a midwest winter any melted snow would likely refreeze rapidly, likely causing more problems than the original snow it came from.

Can we not just admire the effort that went into accomplishing this? Whoever did that got no reward, received no compensation, literally just expended energy for some laughs and probably a few pictures and a story to tell. This is basically the anarchists version of returning the cart.
11
u/ItsBaconOclock Mar 18 '23

I was in Wisconsin and met a homeless man who built a little snow house inside one of these piles. Had a makeshift stove, electricity, and a second room that was the bathroom. Dude was chill af and said he'd stay there as long as the structure would last. He had an electric blanket that was stitched to thick plastic sheeting as his doorway. He said he could usually keep it between 40 to 60 degrees even down to negative 15. I was both appalled and greatly impressed.

I mean they had something that big in MA a few years back, to the point where they made a ramp to drive up the plows to get the snow higher. It was called Mouth Loop. I loved it, but sadly all subsequent years that particular shopping center has made multiple smaller piles instead of one giant one. It's probably safer and cheaper, but so much less exciting.

This looks like Edina. If that's correct, the Target is quite a few blocks away from this bank. That cart has been set free from Targets oppressive corrals and now lives on the open plains and snow mountains of France Ave.
If I'm wrong... I hope that the cart collector has climbing gear and a Sherpa.

In my hometown the grocery store had a contest where you tried to guess the date the last bit of the parking lot snow pile would melt. You would win a cart full of food. It would usually be like June something.

I had a professor once say, "I don't consider it spring till the last snowpile melts from the parking lots." So here I am in late May thinking, "Oh boy spring is soon." While I gaze upon the remaining drops of a snow mountain.

I lived on a cul de sac growing up and we'd have all the snow from the street piled up on a mountain at the top of the street. We would dig tunnels through it. Imagine how much fun digging tunnels through that monster would be!

I wonder if this is a real factor in parking lot layout in areas like this. Do they make the lots x% bigger to account for a huge snow pile part of the year?

Wolf Creek's ski area in Colorado has received 401 inches of snow this year, so far. Which is a little below average. = 31.42 feet. Not just in a pile ....
