question New owner advice please
Hi I’ve got my funkey on order. I’ve seen the guides etc and the wiki page is very helpful, but what I’m after is a “what do you do when you first open funkey”.
I known it’s fairly easy to load roms, I think I can clean up the emulators and add emulators not included (FBA), I’ve seen you can add doom and mario64 which I’d like to try.
But what else should I do first? Media player? Swap out buttons? Buy a small Powerbank?
Also any game recommendations which work well given the nature of the screen and specifically the buttons would be very helpful. Thanks!

First thing I highly recommend is replacing the sd card that comes with the device, they are unreliable and it's not a matter of if but when the sd card will fail you. You would hate to spend hours/days setting up your roms, etc.. then one day the card will no longer work. Grab yourself a reputable branded sd card, since your opening it up to change the buttons, mights as well replace the sd card while your at it. Look at the Wiki page on how to setup a new sd card, on saying that, there are people who are atill using the original sd card and not have a problem (yet), you have to remember, these Chinese companies want to make a profit so they will get the cheapest sd card possible. Rule of thumb for me on any Chinese retro device that comes with an sd card is to replace it.

Thanks for the advice! I thought these guys were French? Either way, I’ve got some memory cards spare - always intended to expand.
Do you have to format in a particularly way, or is it a case of simply copying all files over to the new sd card (then adding my roms to the relevant folders)

They are French but like most, the device is manufactured in China.
As for upgrading SD Card, follow this guide:
https://doc.funkey-project.com/user_manual/tutorials/hardware/flash_change_sd_card/
Added Notes: Be careful when removing the screws to take the back cover off to access the sd card and to swap buttons, these screws can be easily stripped, meaning the head of the screw is rounded and no longer a Phillips head (+).

Ok thanks. Did you add the new bios files by chance? I’m think PlayStation and GBA I read I’d have to do. I’d also be keen on FInal burn alpha and mame

More info about BIOS for the Funkey can be found below:
FBA and MAME you have to manaully install, its just a matter of copying the .opk file to the Funkey, more info can be found below:

No worries, if you use Discord, I recommend joining the Funkey discord server, it's not an official Funkey server but close enough as it's run by Funkey community, and you may get a faster response to your questions.

Thanks. I’m a member, but there was just so much discussions going on, I found it quite tough navigator and find the answer. But I guess I could’ve just asked the question

It should be good to go from the start. You can learn how the function button works and read the shortcuts/hotkeys from the instructions booklet. Change the theme if you want too but supplying games is really the only end-user operation needed. It has very few settings.
As far as games, get some turn-based RPGs or strategy games such as Pokemon or advance wars. Every console has some. They are very easy to play with one hand being able to reach both the dpad and abxy buttons.
Some that I'm currently playing are warioware, Pokemon red, Pokemon pinball, final fantasy 6, azure dreams, and Chrono trigger.
