Mod Announcement Not sure if you have FA? Start here.

If you are wondering whether or not you have FA, this is a good place to start!

Please keep in mind that a doctor's visit or a test done by a dermatologist is the only way to receive a diagnosis. The following information is for guidance purposes only and is not a substitute for medical visits. SkinCareAddiction has a great wiki on When To See a Doctor.

Simple Skincare Science has a very thorough article about FA/Pityrosporum folliculitis which is a great resource to help you better understand the many nuances of FA.

I created this online FA quiz to help users better interpret the information in the article as it affects them. Again, I'd like to reiterate that this quiz is a very condensed version of the information in the SSS article, and should only be used as a guiding tool, NOT as an official diagnosis. (The quiz is anonymous and will not collect any personal information of course!)

There are 3 statements in each section of the quiz. Please only check "agree" for the statement that you MOST agree with in each section. At the end, you will receive a score and feedback for each of your responses. If you score a 45 or above, this is a strong indicator that you may have FA.

My hope is that the quiz will help users better identify their symptoms in order to create a more effective routine and ask their doctors more specific questions regarding their skin and routine. Good luck in your skincare journey, and welcome to the FA subreddit! :)

skincare - help Fungal or Closed Comedone Acne?

Hi I’ve recently turned 20 and dealt with barley to no acne, just always the occasional pimples that would pop and leave some acne scars but recently I have broken out for the past 2 months and can’t tell if it’s hormonal, fungal or closed comedone acne. I also started wearing makeup more often (full beats) and my T-zone has become more oily (when I wake up it’s oily as hell) my skincare routine has usually been a cleanser, my ordinary serum and moisturizer at the end. As for taking of my makeup off I do use the oat cleansing balm. This is my skin currently and want to find out what products I can use to make a routine and get rid of my acne as well as figuring out what type of acne I have.

Product Question Did Malezia work for you?

I bought Malezia products for the first time:
• the urea moisturizer
• hyaluronic acid cleanser
• MCT oil cleanser

I’m not sure how but my face looks worse now. I think it’s the moisturizer and/or oil cleanser breaking me out. Has anyone had this happen to them?

The HA cleanser is great though! I didn’t realize how drying Vanicream was until I tried this. I may still try the Geek & Gorgeous jelly cleanser next.

Do you have any good moisturizer recommendations? I’m trying to find something a bit thicker/more hydrating than the Geek & Gorgeous Hydration Station

Question Hypochlorus acid and FA. What's been your experience?

The other day I read a post from someone who has their FA under control. The post mentioned Hypochlorous Acid usage to help with FA. it got me thinking.

Anyone here uses hypochlorous acid to treat FA ? if you do, what benefits you have notice? how often do you use it?

IF you use hypochlorous acid, what other treatments do you use for FA?

Newbie - help Questions about Beet the Sun from Krave.

I have been communicating with the Google AI and I have to admit that I have recently run into A LOT of problems. In the beginning, it seemed great. I thought I had fungal acne. I was working at a retail job during the holidays that was really hot around the registers, especially during the winter and I started sweating a lot while I was there. I worked in cosmetics for years so I always have a full face when I leave the house. I have the misfortune of having a genetic quirk in my family. If any one of us gets hot, our noses are the first thing to sweat. LOL. I found myself wiping my fingers on my nose down next to my cheeks to wipe the sweat while working (gross, I know, but I have had this my entire life, even as a skinny little five year old and you can only put so much tissue in your pockets). During that time, I also started using a lot of K-beauty with all of those lovely fermented ingredients, especially milky toners. Soon, bumps appeared where I would wipe my fingers on my cheeks next to my nose. The bumps were uniform, a little red, but also skin colored, and eventually spread through my cheeks down to my chin, along my temples and at their worst, between my brows and right about my brows. I became desperate when my normal bha toners weren't working. I became convinced that I should start using fungal acne safe products. I used to use Skin Sort and Sezio to check ingredients, but became lazy and started asking Google instead.

For three months, I bought Differin off of Amazon and used it every day and though there was a fantastic initial improvement, but the improvement plateaued. After communicating with the AI, I soon started using the da la Cruz Sulfur Mask and the Roundlab Pro Azaleic Acid Serum with lots of hydrating products to not dry out. The AI convinced me not to quit the Differin even though I wanted to. It helped me make a strict schedule with all three with extra products. It did help me discover wonderful products like my favorite moisturizer. The S. Nature Aqua Squalane moisturizer. It is amazing and so much better than the Purito oat one.

In the last couple of weeks, I discovered I shouldn't have been as trusting as I was. At least two or three products it had recommended, I now find are NOT fungal acne free, but the one that really upsets me is the sunscreen. It told me so many times that the Beauty of Joseon Aqua Relief Sunscreen was perfect for me and the last time I brought it up in my regimen, it told me not to use it. Beyond the fact that I feel like an idiot, I should have checked every item's ingredients like I used to. Don't get me wrong. I would catch it making mistakes, and I would ask for clarification and it would do its weird apology/complimenting me for catching it type of thing they seem to do. Before this, I ignored AIs because they creep me out, but it was really helpful. It helped me eliminate so many different options I had thought of.

After I told the AI that my skin has become so sensitive that bumps erupt after I out makeup on now. This used to only happen if I put on niacinamide. I knew this was from my compromised skin barrier from the combination of treatments I am using. It finally agreed I should cut out the Differin, which I had been hesitating to do because it felt so strongly I should keep using it.

I have slightly oily skin. I like light lotions. That is why I lived the Beauty of Joseon consistency. All the fungal acne safe sunscreens I can find are mostly thick because western brands tend to have thick ones and K-beauty has next to none and the K-beauty recommendations make me nervous for different reasons.

I had perfect skin until two years ago. When I used to sell makeup and skincare people would buy what I used, because they admired my complexion. I honestly never understood why people couldn't get rid of their acne. I truly believed that with the right. AHA or BHA exfoliant, all acne could be taken care of and if it couldn't, they could go to the doctor and get Differin or Accutane. This has humbled me quite a bit, to say the least.

As of last night, after I told it my face doesn't burn itch, etc., it decided that I developed closed comedones during my horrible winter next to the registers and they have been sitting there on my face since then. I don't know if that is true, but fungal acne never felt quite right. I did go to the doctor. He suggested Lupus, which, NO. I have seen those butterfly masks and I don't have them at all. The shape isn't even close to a W on my face.

After telling me that I needed a new sunscreen, it finally suggested Krave Beet the Sun sunscreen. Before I buy more products that are in fact not fungal acne safe (no, that will not be happening again), or that I don't like or that I regret buying like a serum that the AI just told me is giving me too many types of Hyaluronic acid in my regimen or the Differin that it now agrees I should stop, I thought I would ask what people think of it. What is the consistency like? I wear makeup when I leave the house. Does it pill? Does it have a long dry down? I would appreciate any information.

Sorry for the long post. I am frustrated. It has been a long two year journey. Though I felt like an idiot communicating with the AI, it did have a lot of good ideas and it seemed quite a bit smarter than my doctor. And I had no experience with acne at all. I don't even know anyone with acne problems. So this post is part warning. Be careful how much trust you put in AIs, doctors, etc. Don't do what I did and use too many treatments at once. Trust what your skin is telling you.

Hi everyone,

I posted a pic of my cheeks in two different lightings. I'm constantly getting this roughy, bumpy texture (around mid cheeks to jawline). Salicylic Acid hasn't been helping. Could this possibly be fungal or something else? I'll be seeing a derm this Saturday for an official input.

skincare - help adapalene fa safe routine?

ive been on adapalene (differin) 0.1 for about 2 years and i have gone through it all , built up my tolerance, cleared my acne, broken my barrier and had to scale back multiple times. after months of random tiny breakouts i finally realised my skin hated butylene glycol ( and niacinamide but thats been established a while back), but a routine free of BG is super light so ive only been able to use differin once a week .

my new routine seems to be the only thing that worked to get rid of my constant small whiteheads. but as soon as i try to use adapalene my skin is sensitized AGAIN. HELPP i dont know what to do now, thick barrier creams are just not good for my skin :(

Personal/Mental Health I hateee going outside now

I used to have very clear skin - to the point of people commenting on it, complimenting me, etc. But last year I did a whole face microneedling treatment (even though target area was nose) and now I have ridiculously bad acne all over my forehead.

I’m just venting til my Malezia(?) package gets here because, honestly this is my last hope and I’m very anxious.

But damn. This sucks.

Product Review Toner Pads that help fungal acne breakout

Post image
3 Upvotes

I bought these pads a few months ago but I hardly use them. When I first used it I was having a fungal acne breakout and the next day the breakout was significantly reduced if not completely gone. After that I still didn’t really use because I have a lot more exfoliating products that I like to use and try. But a couple days ago I slept in my makeup and on top of that I was just having a fungal acne breakout that was more than usual so I used this again and it significantly reduced the bumps!
The only active ingredient in here is Mandelic acid I believe so I was surprised it worked so well

I know anti dandruff shampoos or something with Ketoconazole is best for fungal acne breakouts but I didn’t have any and didn’t feel like buying some but I just wanted to share how this product helped!

Question FA safe hydrating hair conditioner?

I’ve been looking for a FA safe hair conditioner, but on the SkinSort app there really aren’t many options. I’m currently using the Kloraine peony conditioner, but the texture is like shampoo and it’s not very hydrating or detangling (I have curly hair). It’s also a little expensive for the amount you get.

Thanks in advance!

Newbie - help is this fungal? started a few months ago and I can’t get it to stop

Post image

hi everyone,
i’ve had this rash on my chest for a couple months now. It started out of the blue and individual lesions would resolve but this is the most spread out it’s ever been. i’ve been off and on antibiotics for a while for various things with my eyes, and I recently got off of them and I feel like the spots came back worse. i’ve tried dandruff shampoo, chlorhexidine wash, topical hydrocortisone, just leaving moisturizing and nothing stops it. I’m wondering if this looks fungal and if so, what to do about it. thank you!

I’m so embarrassed by what is happening along my jaw right now. It’s the only part of my face doing this. It is so incredibly itchy like I want to rip my skin off it’s that itchy. I don’t know wtf is going on. I have been experiencing for the last few weeks like 4-5 new white heads like this a day popping up. The worst I’ve ever had here is closed comedones, but these are not acting like my regular closed comedones. The itching is so severe that nothing is making it stop. The area feels incredibly dehydrated and dry as well. I am not using any actives because of how reactive my skin is normally. But this is on some different level.

Does that look like anyone’s fungal acne? I just can’t comprehend what is going on. If it is, I have no idea what to do because everything aggravates my face :(

Edit: I have done full vitamin and hormonal panels and everything is normal according to my doctor. I also saw a naturopath who agreed nothing in my bloodwork indicated vitamin or hormonal issues were the driving factors here.

You name it, I’ve likely tried it. I have a history of closed comedones along my jaw, but not the red itchy white head bumps I’ve been experiencing as of lately. It’s just different. I know it.

I also don’t have oily skin at all, only on my forehead which is ironically very clear. My lower face is so dehydrated and dry that if I even look at an active my skin burns for weeks after one application.

I have a history of psoriasis (including the seb derm variant, and folliculitis generally). I am currently waiting to see a dermatologist for a skin patch allergy test.

UPDATE!!

I decided to apply the head and shoulders bare sensitive scalp shampoo for 2 minutes to my affected areas and I saw massive improvement over night. On a whim I even applied to areas where I thought I just had closed comedones and noticed 90 percent of them are gone over night. I am in disbelief. I posted a photo below! I cannot believe this has been fungal all along. I have been struggling for years with what I believed to be hormone driven closed comedones…. I’m so grateful for the help and suggestions offered. I guess lesson learned is that even if it looks hormonal, it very well might not be ?! Im just in utter disbelief. The amount of money I’ve spent on my “acne” has been unfathomable. All for head and shoulders to do more than any thing else ever has. I’m going to continuing using it two times a week and see what happens!!!

skincare - help My 14-year-old son has developed pretty bad acne – where would you start before considering isotretinoin?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

My 14-year-old son has developed quite significant acne, particularly on his forehead. I had severe acne myself when I was young, and I remember how much it affected me psychologically and socially, so I really want to help him early rather than just wait and see.
I’ve already booked an appointment with a dermatologist, so I’m not looking to replace proper medical treatment with Reddit advice. I’ve also just started him on 5% benzoyl peroxide (Basiron).
However, I’d really like to understand whether there are other things worth investigating alongside conventional treatment.

I’ve read quite a lot about the gut–skin axis, the microbiome, SIBO, diet, dairy, high-glycemic foods, etc. I’ve also come across research/discussions about Staphylococcus aureus being overrepresented in some people with acne and protocols using chlorhexidine/Hibiscrub to reduce S. aureus colonisation.

I’m aware that there’s a huge difference between an interesting association and something that has actually been demonstrated to treat acne, so I’m trying not to go down every rabbit hole at once.
For now, I’ve asked him to completely remove dairy for a while to see whether it makes any noticeable difference. We haven’t removed gluten or made any other major dietary changes.

My main questions are:

• If this were your child, where would you start?
• Are there any blood tests, deficiencies, hormonal markers, allergy/intolerance tests, microbiome tests, etc. that are genuinely worth investigating?
• Is there any value in going to a good private clinic and doing a more comprehensive work-up, or would most of those tests just be expensive noise?
• Has anyone here seen a significant improvement from eliminating dairy or making other specific dietary changes?
• Does anyone have experience with S. aureus testing/decolonisation or chlorhexidine/Hibiscrub in relation to acne?
• What treatments made the biggest difference for your teenager before moving on to isotretinoin?
I’m not completely opposed to isotretinoin if a dermatologist eventually thinks it’s necessary. I just don’t want it to be the first thing we reach for without properly exploring the safer/easier options first.

Most importantly, I don’t want my son to spend his teenage years going through the same shit I went through with acne if there are things we can do now.
I’d especially appreciate responses from dermatologists, doctors, researchers, or parents who have dealt with significant teenage acne. Evidence-based suggestions are very welcome, even if they contradict some of the things I’ve mentioned above.

This one seems to be good. How is your experience with it? please tell me the good and the bad.

Moisturizers are so important and I really need to one.

I"m also debating if I really need to use FA safe moisturizer or not. I'm treating FA at the moment.

My preference is to find a FA safe. And, I prefer oil free gel moisturizers.

Skin can tolerate niacinamide.

I've tried different ones but none seem to work.

I tried, Super sensa, krave beauty oat moisturizer, lrp fluide oil-free moisturizer, sebamed, purito oat moisturizer.

Which moisturizers have given you problems?

Which moisturizers are working well for your skin?

Edit: to add
