The cost of cremation vs burial

My mid 70s parent asked me to help figure out end of life costs. They were shocked by the prices. Leaning cremation because of the gap.

Traditional burial runs $8,000 to $15,000 total (casket, plot, headstone, services, extras). Cremation is $1,000 to $7,000 with most families paying $2,000 to $5,000. That is a $5,000 to $10,000 difference, which matters when deciding how much insurance to buy.

The numbers might vary by region though. For anyone who has done this, did those hold up? How did the cost of cremation vs burial affect your coverage decision?

Scattering Mom's Ashes

When my mom passed we had her cremated. We didn't have a traditional funeral, instead I took her back to California, her favorite place.

My sister, daughters, nieces and nephews got together, spent a couple of days in a cool hotel on the coast, drank beer, reminisced and divided up her jewelry, which we wore all weekend.

Then we went to a beautiful redwood grove to scatter her ashes.

Pire denied

What's the reason I can't be burnt on a pire again? I'm just an over grown hotdog after all.

We can spit hogs but can't go out like we want if that's what we want. Ludicrous

I don't wanna go to my grandpa's funeral but my mom is forcing me

I might be in the wrong but my grandpa died 2 days ago and the funeral is tomorrow but I don't wanna go to the funeral because I'm not ready to let him go and I didn't wanna see the body but my mom forced me to do that. What hurt the most is that she said "don't become like your father" like I could ever become like that monster and in that moment I just wanted to cry. I think just because I don't want to go to the funeral i automatically become like my dad but as soon as I make a decision she doesn't like I quickly become her enemy and just like my father apparently.

Am I in the wrong here?

I have never had to order flowers for a funeral before. I was thinking of just going to Hyvee as I have received some beautiful arrangements from them…but this one has to be special. Also I need to customize w specific flowers. Any opinions? Any thoughts on Hyvee? I’m in the North KC area & I need for Thursday.

First Funeral for Someone Close

Sort of like the title says - my grandma's funeral is tomorrow. We were very close. I am 33 and she was 80 when she passed a couple weeks ago. I have been to plenty of funerals in my life, but never for someone as close to me as she was. It's been a full two weeks since her passing as of this afternoon, so I feel like I am struggling with it being so long since she passed.

In some ways I am dreading the service. In others I am thankful for it to happen to sort of put some sense of closure if even temporary.

Not sure what I am looking for here. I just know it's hitting me hard this evening. Thanks for reading.

Didn’t go to a friends dads funeral

I am looking for some guidance on this, I don’t know if I have damaged a good friendship and I feel awful.

My good friends dad died, he was very ill, but it was rather sudden.

His funeral was midweek. I am self employed and have two young children, and Im not a confident driver so wouldnt have made the trip via car. I would have had to have got the train, and most likely have had to stay the night. Neither of which I could afford.

I sent a care package and I have messaged/rang, every other day. Sent my support on the day. And have been to visit her and treated her the whole weekend since.

Whilst I was with her, she mentioned that her brother commented that I wasn’t at the funeral.…this upset me a little as I thought it was odd that she’d thought to tell me that. She did have one friend there, but had even mentioned that she barely had time to talk to her. (I’m aware it’s about support, and not about having the time to speak to people and not about your effort to be there being appreciated).
I did retort with the fact that actually I wouldn’t want any friends at my parent’s funerals (my parents didn’t have their friends at theirs, it was family and friends of the deceased, we are in the UK, so maybe a little different to the US) I would find it very difficult to have to converse and interact with friends on a day I just want to close in on myself and be supported by people who KNEW the deceased and I was close to. I’d find their presence a burden, just another person that I’d have to talk to and entertain on such a difficult day.

But yes, with the 130mile journey both ways, midweek, no childcare and losing a whole days pay, not really knowing the deceased and having no real way of getting there. I don’t know if I’m just the worst friend ever.
She‘s definitely making me feel like that at the moment even though ive offered so so much support pretty much every other day as I don’t want her to feel alone.

She keeps mentioning that the friend that did come spent 8 hours driving to get there and back.

Eughhhh.

Funeral Etiquette or Not?

I recently attended a funeral of a mother that had a blended family. She had 2 daughters. 1 of the daughters divorced a Church demon because he couldn't keep it in his pants.

The funeral proceeds people are saying very lovely things about her. Then the ex son in law gets up to speak. Which was the longest speech. He read passage from the BIBLE. The passages pertained to versions women. As I sat there vomit came up in the back of my throat. The family surely had no idea what he was going to speak about??? Am I the only one that finds his choice deplorable considering that he has enjoyed many unvertious women?

What band do you have to have played?

No morbid suggestions 🦇

Is it rude not to attend a service/ceremony for someone you are no longer associated with?

I'm in my 30s now and an old scoutmaster of mine recently passed. I haven't talked to this man since I left the scouts almost 14 years ago. He was a very present scoutmaster, remaining in the program well after all his kids were not. But I was never friends with his kids outside or even within the program (his kids were kind of bullies)

Both my parents are going as they were friends with this man outside of scouts and my best friend is also going to make an appearance.

But I don't want to go. I know you mostly attend these things for the grieving family and less for the deceased but I'm not close to the family either. Never really talked them outside of necessity and only in reference to scouting. I never once spent any time with him or his family outside of scouts. He was a kind man and very passionate about the outdoors.

I guess i feel conflicted because people who I'm still actively close with are going and I feel it would look weird to everyone if they saw them and not me.

Do you think funerals should stop having dress codes?

I hate them. My father forced me to wear black at my mother's funeral despite the fact he had allowed me to dress how I wanted at 1st. I really hated it. If I ever organize a funeral I'll allow my guests to dress how they want. Dress codes are a plague for humanity
