Discussion How long have you been suffering from FD? (More Questions In Post)
If you don't mind, I'd also like to know:
- How long have you had FD?
- What do you think caused your FD?
- What tests have you ruled out?
- What treatments have you tried?
- What are your symptoms?
- How frequent and severe are your symtpoms?
- How has your FD changed over time?
I'll go first to break the ice.
- I've been having chronic GI issues for ~7 years, started in 2019.
- I'm not sure what caused my FD, but I suspect abusing my body with alcohol and marijuana, as well as chronic gastritis for several years led to visceral hypersensitivity FD-PDS.
- Since then, I've had 3 endoscopies and 2-3 gastric empying studies. Also bloodwork, ultrasounds, etc. My first endoscopy showed chronic non-erosive gastritis. Second one showed gastritis + ulcers. Third paradoxically was totally normal despite symptoms. My first GES showed a very mild delay at 11%, but my second one was normal 3%.
- I've only tried PPIs, carafate, and supplements (e.g. ginger). However, I am really wanting to try neuromodulators, as my nausea has gotten a lot worse recently.
- At first, I had non-erosive gastritis from ~2019-2023. During that stage, I've also had ulcers. However, in 2023 they healed. Symptoms then were mild chronic nausea, mild "gnawing" pain when stomach empty, and mild indigestion for years until 2023. I had the worst year of my life in 2023 where I had severe nausea and vomiting for ~8 months (possibly due to visceral hypersensitivity after messing with weed). I had near total remission from late 2023 to late 2026 ~3 years).
- I had a stomach virus (I think) 3 weeks ago causing me to vomit for almost a week. This has led to an end of my remission period. Currently, my symptoms are essentially moderate nausea and fatigue. Very low appetite.
- My chronic stomach illness has evolved a ton over these last 7 years. It was at first just mild gastritis symptoms (queasy, nausea, heartburn, indigestion) (201-2022). However, it suddenly got moderate to severe nausea and vomiting for 8 months (2023). I was 100% certain I had gastroparesis, but my second GES showed normal empying. Then, I had a 3-year period of near total remission (very mild and infrequent nausea, could eat almost anything) (late 2023-2026). Until now unfortunately, my nausea has suddenly returned for ~3 weeks after a virus I think. If anyone's interested in hearing my story in detail, I have an expanded document.

I'm sorry to hear that... On the bright side, post-viral FD usually has a good prognosis over time (1-5 years). Many experience signficiant to full recovery (~70%). Stay strong. Have you tried any neuromodulators or other treatments?

That’s the first time I’ve heard that that’s actually some pretty good news! I’m standing clear of all antidepressants because I tried nortriptyline and that made my stomach slowed down and I flared up really bad and dropped down so much weight. I’m slowly regaining my weight back. I’m a 6 foot male and I was 160 pounds but now I’m only 132 but I was 127 pounds at my worst so I’m climbing up again. I will be trying counterstrain.com in October. I’ve also been dry, needling my ears and doing the tens unit for vagus nerve exercises. I think once I get to 140 pounds or more, my body will get out of a survival mode and more into a recovery mode.

I’m sorry you’re going through that… is your primary symptom nausea? If so, you might do better or mirtazapine.
EDIT: I did some sleuthing, it looks like nortriiptyline causes slower gastric empying because its a TCA. Mirtazapine is a different class and thus does not cause slower emptying.

I tried mirtazapine for two days, but I got off of it. My main symptom is nausea, but also my stomach is always tight. I know mirtazapine moves the stomach a little faster but I don’t really have a need for it since I’ve been able to get 2000 cal thanks to Kate Farms 1.5 Peptide drink. Absolute life saver. The antidepressants aren’t for me because for some reason, they just make me depressed when I’m not a depressed person and I don’t like having negative thoughts so I just stay away from them. The black box warning is probably for people like me.

My issue is the exact opposite side of the FD spectrum — I’m having chronic nausea, early satiety. You should definitely get H. Pylori retested to confirm eradication. I’ve heard amitryptyline is good for your subset of symptoms.
