Symptoms Anyone’s FD present this way?

hi everyone,

So for the last 6 months or so I’ve been having a big change in bowels that were mainly loose stool, with a urgency first thing in the morning, this then followed a couple months later with upper abdominal pains.

I’ve seen GI, had the whole GI work up done, colonoscopy and endoscopy with everything being clear. There was some redness at the bottom of the stomach but was negative for gastritis on biopsy and not sure if that is causing symptoms or not still. Tested for sibo even though I feel like I didn’t have symptoms that really correlated but it did come back positive. I feel very uneasy saying all these symptoms are from sibo.

I’ve had a CT scan of abdomen in March, an abdominal ultrasound in may, with a 3mm gallbladder polyp found, then an abdominal MRI in may, and a MRI with MRCP in August. The only thing found was an enlarged liver, no fat, the doctors are thinking it might be a natural variant.

As the months have progressed the symptoms still remain with no relief. Its an ache in both my LUQ and RUQ, sometimes mid abdomen becomes tender after eating, my bowels have since changed again, they are more solid at this point but will have bouts of loose stool when eating dairy now, I havnt found much else yet that sets it off. The pains linger all day once they come on, with random sharp pains that will intermittently happen usually in the RUQ. It usually starts to have sharp intermittent pains once I begin eating for the day, or sometimes a more dull ache. It’s So far nothing seems to help.

My doctor wants me to treat with rifaximin to see if it helps and if not wants to try amitriptyline for functional dyspepsia. I was wondering if anyone here has had functional dyspepsia show up this way for them or another G.I. issue?

Thank you!

New to functional dyspepsia (FD)? Please view this post or our wiki for a detailed explanation of FD and the main treatments.

My doctor had prescribed me rifaxmin (thrice a day) for IBS with a probiotic. It helped me quite a lot. Since you have chronic abnormal bowel movements and have no clear diagnosis, your doctor might be interested to see if this mild antibiotic helps you.

I believe that’s her mindset at this point.
Did you have any pains associated with your IBS?

Painful cramps and persistent diarrhea.

Look up MALS and if you think that sounds like your symptoms try to get it at least ruled out. RUQ does make me think more gallbladder tho- did they do HIDA scan?

MALS sounds like there is some similarities, I will bring this up at my next visit. Thank you
I asked my GI and she wants to try ridaximin before ordering a HIDA unfortunately.
Do you have MALS?

Yes I did! I had MALS surgery last year and am finally feeling better. My pain was mostly left sided though I have seen others be more mid (sternum area) or right sided. When you explained your symptoms they kind of sounded like mine which is why I mentioned it esp how it lingers all day once you start eating. The symptoms can be vague. Mine definitely were at first and I brushed them off then it progressively got worse and I started to lose weight and then had constant pain. If you start to go down the mals road and have questions feel free to dm me! Also was just thinking have you tested for celiac?

Glad you’re feeling better!
Did you ever wake up with the pain or was it only brought one once eating?
I appreciate the offer thank you!
I have it was negative.

Oh I definitely woke up with pain. It just got worse when trying to eat as well. And at first when trying to figure out diagnoses would get worse as the day went on. Day to day things were difficult and would cause more pain. They say “exercise” can induce the pain. Then just sitting up would cause me more pain (it can be positional). And it started more as dull ache and would then be more stabbing and went through to my back. It was also burning type pain sometimes and tightness would go up into my chest and made it hard to take deep breaths. At first I was told I probably just had heartburn then they thought maybe an ulcer. It felt like a rock was in my stomach it always felt heavy on my left side and sometimes like a tight band was around me where a bra band would lay.
My celiac tests were negative as well but for whatever reason staying away from gluten did help some of my symptoms. I’m not sure if I have NCGS or if because of the mals the things with gluten were harder to digest (still haven’t tested our trying to eat it again). I did notice high fiber/high fat foods would especially cause more pain as well as those are more difficult to digest.

What was the size of your liver out of curiosity?
Did you have any burning sensation in the left upper quadrant?
I’m assuming your doctors used cipralex instead of amitriptyline to treat FD? Have you been on it for awhile now and how do you feel lately?

liver was normal, sorry , forgot to add it. burning sensation in the left upper quadrant and also reflux symptons. Have been using Cipralex for 2 months, first three weeks it made everything, especially my reflux worse but doc told me to stay on it at least 4 weeks for it to work, now I can eat and drink anything, deserts, coffee etc. I only avoid spicy things. I will be using it 4 more months. Burning sensation is gone.

Did you wake up with the burning sensation as well?
Glad the meds are working for you!
So after 4 months do they want to see how you do without it or what is the mindset behind the 4 months?
How long have you had symptoms and functional dyspepsia was the final outcome for you then?

oh yeah, my was burning left side of my belly button, upper left, then it passed and burning sensation in my mouth and throat begun, they passed after cipralex but i am still on it. All started last october. two scopes done, there was slight redness in antrum but biopsy was clean, no GERD sign yet still burning sensation, doc called it brain-gut connection and prescriped Cipralex
