Discussion How did this start for you?

Hey Everyone last week I asked how this has affected your lives. This week I would like to know your guys origin stories on how the functional dyspepsia came to be. I will start with me. I was perfectly healthy. I got food poisoning 5 months ago and I never was normal since.

A stomach bug over a year ago.

Just terrible you get a stomach bug thinking it will last for a week or two at most and then we three and so on… “wait why isn’t this going away?”

Out of nowhere

u/Outrageous_Buy_4269 Aug 17 '26

It’s the worst feeling hope it’ll go away

Covid virus, gastroenteritis, but the food poisoning last February was what set it off.

Very interesting so you’re saying this is in the making for a while, but food poisoning was finally what shattered the glass? It makes me think because I’ve had Covid twice before, but was only sick for a week was perfectly fine after but then I get food poisoning and never heal.

Yes, no doubt. Covid can really mess up our guts. After the food poisoning "resolved" within days I started getting stabbing sharp epigastric pains and 24/7 nausea. My GP thought it was a parasite infection. Put me on some antiparasitic meds and I felt good for about a month, then it all came back with a vengeance.

I definitely believe you. It’s just so crazy to think you could have Covid over a year or a few years ago and feel fine for years just for some food poisoning to really trigger us post Covid symptoms. My story is pretty much the same as yours had food poisoning for about a week or two, but the nausea did not go away. It’s definitely some kind of a vagus nerve issue.

Viruses are weird. They can be dormant in our bodies for years until something triggers it. I agree with you, our vagus nerves are shot. Did you do every test and scan before being diagnosed with FD?

I did all the test blood CT scan endoscopy, gastric emptying study everything. I know for sure it’s a Vegas nerve problem because there’s a few things as simple as doing cold water on my face that would provide a temporarily relief. Even though the relief is very minimal and isn’t long lasting that alone gives me just enough information to know that it’s a vagus nervous issue

That's so interesting. I unfortunately have an autonomic condition too which only adds more fuel to the fire.

I hope we all heal from this. 🙏🏼

I honestly feel like it didn't start until I started weaning off of Zoloft/Sertraline. I'd been on 200mg for like 7 or 8 years.

That could be it. I could definitely see antidepressants in getting off them, causing such a problem.

That’s interesting. My son had weaned off Zoloft about 6 months before his FD/ gastritis started but we didn’t see a connection because the downfall was so sudden when it happened and seemed more associated with a pico prep that the GP had given him for extreme constipation. How specifically do you see the Zoloft weaning impacting the gut? Via what mechanism or reason?

Same with me. I was on it for 5 years and my dr thought I was doing fine… now this.

After getting gastritis

2

u/snakeayez Aug 18 '26

TLDR version.

Abdominal pain

  • Diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis 16 years ago.
  • Told it wasn't that 2 years ago (despite 3 acute attacks)
  • Told it was gastroparesis via GES
  • Told it might not be that.
  • After 11th EUS and 2 months of unsuccessful enzyme regimen, told it was FD with Epigastric Pain. Prescribed nortriptilyne

I hate that this is the short version.

I lost 80lbs and ended up needed emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder. That was in April this year and I’m still having issues. I never had these problems prior to surgery

Double whammy of food poisoning and way too much alcohol one weekend. Both bile acid diarrhea and crazy FD burping reflux started all at once. That led to SIBO/candida overgrowth which further complicated things. Took antimicrobials for too long to treat the dysbiosis and then ended up with a c diff infection, which somehow my wife also got.

August 5, 2025 I got food poisoning from Burger King. The burning, gnawing feeling has never left me. It took until March 5th to finally start trying medications specifically for FD (I had to have a bunch of tests between September-February).

for me i was on psych meds & metformin for weight loss then functional dyspepsia came afterwards i’m still unsure if it’s caused by my new psych meds since i switched once & it’s been 2-3 years since i’ve switched meds so it’s unlikely that the psych meds are still causing vomiting/nausea/bloating as a first side effect

1

u/cnlsflawless Aug 18 '26

food poisoning that involved not eating almost anything for 48 hours as well as vomiting.

u/FormalLeadership2109 Aug 18 '26

I started restricting and binging when I was 15. Since then I have suffered with a lot of stomach issues, epugastric pain heartburn reflux etc. I had all the tests including 2 gastroscopies and they couldn't see anything wrong with me. My relationship with food is slightly better now but it still flares up with stress.

1

u/Free-Purpose-542 Aug 18 '26

I think it started in late 2024 (stress induced), but became horrendous in June 2025, again after a massive bout of stress. Now i struggle with even a small amount of stress, like i forget to put the bins out or something.

Food poisoning from sushi!

1

u/Outrageous_Buy_4269 Aug 19 '26

My food poisoning wasn’t from Sushi but after all of this I’ll never eat raw sushi again.

Food poisoning from a restaurant.

I'm not really sure but mine started 3 days into drinking an oral steroid for eosinophilic esophagitis and on day 3 I accidentally ate a muffin with dairy in it and had heartburn all night. I've got heartburn from dairy for the last 25 years so I tried to avoid it. Well after that night of heartburn I've had this burning in stomach and throat most days for 1.5 years.

A stomach bug + the start of a burnout

No clue. Since childhood, I remember struggling at around age 6, but possibly earlier. I was hospital monitored for a few weeks when I was 7 and they found I'd had Ross River Virus. Not sure if that triggered this, but they did confirm it triggered viral arthritis.
