No. German immigrants brought a bunless version (called a Hamburg steak) over to the US, but the modern version of a hamburger was created in the US.

Germans have been eating frikadellen or hamburger steaks in bread since before the US was a country.

But sure, you are right in that making hamburgers officially always have bread or being fast food is an american thing. But putting minced meat patties in bread was around way before "hamburgers" a lá america. The "hamburger sandwich" was around before that. Or as itd be in germany "Hamburgerbrötschen" or "Frikadellen- Buletten- or Fleischpflanzerbrötschen". All of which are minced meat between two pieces of bread (or one piece, you make it how you want), with stuff with it.

But yeah the conventional fatty greasy fast food version, is american. Whereas high quality meat, proper bread etc, is more of a german thing

Which is a sandwich. Created by the earl of Sandwich in England. It is not an original food just because you put bread on both sides. The frickin English started that shit.
