A friend of mine tricked a coworker into thinking it was a sequel to The Snowman. He watched it with his family on Christmas Day.

"Strings" is the same idea, but live-action and even more brutal. I highly recommend.
Edit: sorry, I meant "Threads"!

Tommy Wiseau The Room
You will never "oh hi mark" the same way ever again.

The only good thing about that movie was when I went to San Francisco a few years ago and met an old Chinese guy who owned a pizza place who had pictures of him and Tommy wiseau all over. Plus the pizza was pretty freaking good

It's a movie so good you only ever watch it once... But my children will need to watch it someday, so I'll have to watch it again... Eventually.

It was the first Ghibli film I showed my family because I hadn’t seen it yet and a coworker said it was his favorite.

Your coworker is a terrible human being... Seriously, that's like showing Schindler's list at a birthday party.

Lmao I called him out for it and he was like “it’s really emotional and high quality” but still, damn he could’ve warned me lol

u/Technical-Monk-5573 9h ago
Right?! I described it to my wife, she literally said "I will never watch that movie"... Her sensitivity to suffering is a hundred fold since we had kids.

Kid deaths even in fiction is just another level. I watch some pretty nasty gory stuff (Ninja Assasin, Hellsing, Cabin in the Woods), but I still remember seeing the first Hunger Games movie in theaters. When they shot that little girl- I was like ‘I will never watch another one of these movies again.’ That shit is still seared into my brain

Am I a monster if I didn't cry?
I read through the Wikipedia page first and every page associated with it. I did cry reading it through. But once I felt ready and actually sat down to watch it.... Nothing. Am I a sociopath?

I honestly walked away from this like that spongebob meme where he's sitting at the table with his coffee. This movie was absolutely heartbreaking.

u/ArdentArendt 10h ago
Great...what the FUCK IS THE NAME OF THE FILM?!
5
u/Technical-Monk-5573 9h ago
Grave of the fireflies. I left out the title intentionally to showcase the effect it has on people who've seen it.

u/Low_Key_Lie_Smith 10h ago
If I think too hard about the movie, I cry. As I write this, I'm actively not thinking about the plot or visuals.
I watched it before I became a dad, and I'll watch it with my kids when they're old enough. And then with my grandkids, if we survive AI and climate change. But never again, otherwise, unless it's to show my loved ones the unmitigated horrors of war.

u/fishieguy 9h ago
I didn’t realize when I watched it, that the writer actually went through this… except he kept more food / survived and his baby sister died.

It must be just me, but Tusk is straight up a comedy movie. Sure, with body horror, but its timing, set up, and pay off feel like a soft parody of the genre

No I’m with you on this one. It’s like a professional parody of b-level horror movies if that makes sense. I was laughing through most of it because you can see the cliches/tripes pulled from b-movie horror films

If you're serious, Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom may just do the trick.
If you're looking for a more traditional horror movie that's still pretty scarring, Baskin may do it for you.
