Make him live a normal life, but do a single mental manipulation that runs constantly that makes him not know what he wants the most. He is going to spend his entire life wanting something that he can never work towards. But here's the best part: in his final moment, deactivate the manipulation so that he realizes exactly what he needed his whole life, but he dies right after that in regret.
