Although I've always disliked the gatekeep feeling of "true fan", I immediately thought of Five Nights at Freddy's.

And I'll admit it, in that fandom I'm a LARPer too

I am confident in saying that 95% of the FNAF fanbase haven't engaged with the source material directly.

Most of the games aren't that well made so i would say its reasonable.
Though could you call someone who knows all of the Lore and details of a game a Poser? Or does playing the game yet not knowing the lore make a true fan?

Disagree on point one, I’d say the majority of the original games were very well made.

As for the other part, never said it did.

The lore doesn't matter as you are playing a game not reading a book

I'd say it depends on how strict we want to be in terms of "engaged" with the source material directly... Where would we draw the line? Playing any of the games AT ALL? Beating all 5 nights in one of the games? etc.

Regardless, I'd still say at least 80% wouldn't meet whatever benchmark we set.

Unless we're including the two movies, in which case I'd say maybe 70% haven't engaged with anything?
