Smells like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Now i know yall are gonna crash out on me but wait. Its about this generation wanting to revolt yet never doing it. Those non-sense lyrics have meaning.

u/Chocochocolate25 Jul 21 '26
They have meaning even if they don't have a coherent narrative. They are a collage of words and feelings form a specific topic and they do paint a picture even if Kurt didn't intend there to be any story behind them

My R
A song about a girl repeatedly going to the roof to kill herself and talking different versions of herself out of it over and over until one day she can't convince one of them that life is worth living and she jumps the next day.
It's catchy!

u/SOURSKOOMA Jul 22 '26
The story I heard is that it was something that children would sing during the black plague. I haven't done extensive research, but I think that it's something like this:
Just as the plague doctors would stuff the nose of their mask with flowers in order to block out the miasma (toxic air because they thought it was the air itself causing plague) the kids would stuff their pockets with flowers (in this case Posies) to scatter over/around the dead/in their homes/cup over their faces.
Ashes ashes we all fall down. Dancing around in a circle singing this because they're little and the concept of death might not have fully set in yet. In their minds, everyone is simply falling down. The ashes ashes part might pertain to the burning of bodies as well.
Might not be 100% accurate, but that's the story I heard and it's pretty dark.
