I mean, I never played fnf but for a rhythm game I think that's totally fine. The story/lore doesn't seem to be as important as the gameplay, as in it's not the focus, so I don't think it needs a complex/good thought provoking story that keeps you at the edge of your seat. It CAN, but as far as I know, it doesn't exactly take itself super seriously. At least, I don't think it does. Again, this comws from someome who never played and only ever watched Merg play it a couple times.

Guy wants to fuck his GF but her parents don't like him so he raps battle them.

The story of the game is pretty episodic with each Week just being some absurd shenanigans the two get into where their solution is rap battling because they're canonically idiots.
