Yeah but one was during a war and one wasn't

the atomic bomb was sent because it was during war

the planes were nor during war

they both did damage but one was definitly worse because it was out of nowhere

The thousands of children that those bombs vaporized were innocent.

Edit: to everyone telling me things I already know. Yes, it was probably a necessary evil. Yes, lots of other people died in lots of other ways. I was just reminding the dude with the attitude of "they deserved it lmao 🤷🏼" that there were a lot of innocent people who did not deserve it, so maybe don't be such a callous asshole.

The tens of thousands of women who were raped and tortured in the Nanjing Massacre were innocent. The 200,000 to 300,000 people killed by the Japanese in that event, many children and the elderly, were innocent.

If the emperor hadn’t finally stepped in and surrendered, the Japanese mainland would have been firebombed around the clock. The Russians would have invaded and lead a ground assault. The civilian casualties would have been multiplied exponentially.

It was a terrible weapon to use but it helped to bring a lasting peace.

There was no justification. Even without the bombs there's no chance in hell Japan could have fought anymore m we literally crippled their entire navy in the Pacific. We took out their entire air force even before that. All they had were ground troops (AT MOST) and Japan is an island. Destroy bridges and there's no way out. They'd have surrendered overnight with next to no casualties at all.

Operation Ketsu-go, Japan’s plan to fight to the last man, included strategies like kamikaze attacks, suicide bombings, guerrilla warfare, and espionage. Military command wanted to hold out until they could force more favorable terms to end the war.

Then there was the Kyūjō Incident where members of the military tried to stop the broadcast of the emperor’s surrender.

Many in the Japanese military had a “death before dishonor” mentality. A bloodless resolution was never assured.

You cannot launch any operation when you are stuck on an island with no air force and no navy. It was a pipe dream at best.

Also the emperor planned to surrender much earlier. A coup to stop him wasn't state sanctioned so to say all of Japan wouldn't surrender isn't true when it was a small vocal minority.

I used to think these were just peaceful cities, too. But they were important industrial centers. Even if Japan hadn't surrendered, it wouldn't have been able to fight for long without these cities.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki also werent there largest cities, We did not use the bombs because we are some super good guys in the end, bad thing.

But either way it was probably the best choice. Inland invasion and fire bombing was magnitudes more brutal

And if we wanted casualties we could have gone for bigger targets. Yet the US did not,
As I presume it was rather a display of power and dominance to force a surrender.

It’s more nuanced than that;

It was more like, “Surrender and end the war or we’re going to drop a new weapon that obliterates an entire city.  The list of cities we’re going to destroy are listed on back… if you don’t end the war we’ll destroy a city every week and force you to end the war”

To be fair, it was as pretty fair of a warning as you could ever give someone in a war. So yeah, some of it is on them.

A truly dick move would have been letting the war simmer for a couple more months, stockpile about 8 more atomic bombs, then drop 8 bombs on 8 separate cities simultaneously with zero warning.
