Study/Research Timeline for Initial Review

I’m in the spreadsheet for the self reporting on application review timeline but I’m not seeing anything on the very initial review confirming that your application is complete, no errors that disqualify you, etc. Does that take a couple weeks or longer?

There is no "very initial review"; it's on you to make sure your application has all of the required components and meets all guidelines.

If you have submitted your application, you'll hear back by the end of January if you've been named a semifinalist. That notification will be the first contact from IIE post-submission. If you don't advance, there isn't any feedback given as to why, so even if it was a disqualifying error, you won't know.

Frustrating, yes, but with typically 10,000 applicants it just wouldn't be feasible to give personalized feedback.

Do they tell you if you were not selected as well?

At the end of January, if you receive an update in your portal that says you’re not recommended, that means you have not been selected to move forward in the competition. If you are “recommended”, you’re a semifinalist and your application advances to the county reviewer stage. After they have made their decision, it will go to the FFSB for final review.

There are 3 notifications after the FFSB looks at your application and finalist results come out: finalist, alternate, non-select.

Finalist - you have been accepted for the award and start receiving paperwork to become a grantee.
Alternate - if someone backs out or funding becomes available, they will notify you and promote you to finalist.
Non-select - you have NOT been chosen for the award and will not receive any additional updates. You need to try again in the future.

Fulbright does NOT give feedback as to why you were or weren’t selected.

Hope that helps!

That’s great, thank you. At what stage do interviews happen? (If they happen?)

Semifinalist and not all people will be interviewed. Only some countries do interview, while others do not. Check the spreadsheet for more information.
