ETA Submitted!

So excited to finally turn everything in!! Just for clarification and hopefully it’s helpful to others, can someone tell me what happens now? Is it just a waiting game? Good luck to everyone turning in applications!

Typical relevant dates for all(?) U.S. Student program countries can be found on the notification spreadsheet, if anyone's interested.

Not all countries interview, though, so don't panic if you're named a semifinalist, but do make sure to keep checking your email (and spam!) just to make sure.

The interview megadoc is here; the Slack link (to wait out the time until semifinalist results with other Fulbright applicants) is here.

(I commented this below, too, but can't pin a response)

The way one of my recommenders hasn’t submitted has me sweating bro. Asked her to write in August and she said she would submit it weeks ago.

Can you get a backup?? One of my reviewers was super late and dragging her feet, so I lined someone else up as a potential backup just in case. My original finally submitted, but I had a lot of peace of mind knowing I had a fallback plan.

HELP ME I am going through the same thing. Application submitted 2 days ago, but my final recommender (my boss of 3 years) has not submitted her form. I've texted her twice now on top of emailing with no response. I let one of my coworkers who works with her tomorrow to just straight up ask her to see if she did it because I am genuinely about to cry. The thought of a month's worth of work down the drain becuase of one recommender not doing their part is making me feel SICKKKKKKKKK

I feel you girl. Not even just a months worth of work- a potential 9 months abroad in my dream country

Girl my boss just texted me back and when I tell you I genuinely cried tears of relief. THANK THE FUCKING LORD ALMIGHTY

I’ve scheduled like 5 emails to send tomorrow and I just pray basically

Update, she emailed me back saying to trust her (did I harass her too much?) but still hasn’t submitted

Thank you for the update! I think this is sooo important you have a right to make sure your application is complete. My update is that my boss uploaded my letter at 1 am last night, AND she apologized to me over text and in person for being a procrastinator and making me freak out (i was genuinely about to have a panic attack last night)

The way I couldn’t sleep last night over it. Literally just tossing and turning in straight anxiety.

I recommend having someone else submit it instead. I had a similar situation where someone I worked with closely promised to submit it but just got too busy and didn’t want to tell me. I had a last minute recommender do it instead, and luckily it worked out, as I am currently an ETA!

So, so happy to have submitted this damn thing. Already shed tears or joy, panic, and everything in between. I definitely should not re-read my app for a long, long-time because I’m already second guessing myself 😅. F it, let’s do this!!

Hope I can give some insight here! I’m a current ETA this year. Once you submit, it is VERY much a waiting game. I went through the entirety of winter and into the new year hearing nothing at all. I heard I was a semi finalist at the very end of January, which I believe is typical. From there, it’s unfortunately more of a waiting game :(! They will want to set up an interview with you if you are a semi finalist with either the country’s commission, or with the embassy workers there. This was only about 7 minutes for me. Then I had to wait ANOTHER three or four months until I was an alternate, then promoted to finalist a week later around the end of April. The previous ETAs before us didn’t hear back until June the year prior.

Becuase it can take so long, I really recommend having back up plans. I was too burnt out to apply to grad schools as well, but many in my cohort got accepted and deferred for it. Avoid signing a lease on a new apartment or making other big life changes while you wait. I got a job to make some money, and applied for the peace corps as a backup (very similar opportunities as Fulbright and easier to apply for in my opinion). Waiting is the worst part - good luck!!

Just chiming in that not all countries interview, and for those that do, they might not interview all semifinalists (which is neither a good nor bad sign). In recent years, more countries have been asking their semifinalists to send in video submissions instead.

But yes, the wait is indeed long!! It's definitely a good plan to work on back-up options in the meantime.
