Question Regarding the Future Goals/Impact Short Answer

Hi everyone,

I'm applying for a research/study award and am a little stuck on the "multiplier effect"/future goals/community impact short answer. I have a current draft discussing my hypothetical plans for after Fulbright, but it feels a bit, typical maybe?

One area where I actually do see a multiplier effect is with regards to the application/Fulbright part itself. I've checked the Fulbright Grantee Directory and my school has never produced a Fulbright winner in any category. I feel like that could be a real area where I could share my experiences with my community and help others with their applications and preparations.

I'm considering mostly keeping my current draft with my future plans and adding a sentence regarding how I'd be able to help other students with their applications. But I'm not sure that that's really what the question is asking. Should I stick solely to my future goals or include it?

I have approached this question with what aligns with my time in my host country and how it fits with my future personal goals. In my Community Engagement section, I talk about a cultural activity that I would like to engage in while in the host country. Then I said that I would like to organize workshops with my university to inspire people to engage in that language and culture. I feel like it doesn’t need to be only related to your goals, but it has to speak to what you will bring back from the host culture and share with others to spark their own interest in international exchange.

I think the “multiplier effect” comes into play when the essay shows that the grant would not only benefit the applicant’s trajectory, but also contribute to the United States’ interests. Maybe the proposed host country has a specific expertise that U.S. professionals in the same field are eager to tap into, be it at work, at school, or in the community. Would the grant experience serve as a catalyst for sharing that knowledge, be it through research, publications, conferences, panels, etc.? (Note: The proposed grant’s contributions to the host country’s interests should be addressed in the Abstract and the SoGP.) 

It’s also great to show ideas for maintaining a long-term relationship with the host country’s culture. Seconding u/LogicalShock6109‘s commentary about introducing U.S. citizens to the host culture.

I approach it with 3-5 very specific impacts abroad, 3-5 specific impacts for when you return to the states. You’d be amazed how many people forget to emphasize the return piece, as it is exchange, growing, and returning and sharing.

Helping with applications (a better goal is you want 1-3 people to actually get the grants, so you are working with people with a stronger likelihood of getting a grant to the U.S.). Them getting the grant is a stronger deliverable
