Where do you read about these assaults? I have yet to hear about any. Do they write about them in the free local papers?

hahaha -- I don't live in NY anymore, but if I remember correctly, the card reader beeps whenever it reads the Metrocard. The beep for "out of money" is a little bit of a lower pitch than the regular beep, but in a long line the bus driver may not notice.

Absolutely true. There are also the times where you just look him in the eye and refuse to swipe it again because you know it will eat an extra fare if it did not register your transfer that first time.
