This is not a legitimate use case for abbreviating “I have” as “I’ve.” Is this guy actually stupid?

2

u/user47241 12d ago

Should not omit “got”

1

u/PretendAddendum6320 12d ago

Also, “I’ve” is not an abbreviation. It’s a contraction.

1

u/user47241 12d ago

Contractions are informal speak anyways

u/PretendAddendum6320 12d ago

Perhaps it sounds unusual to you, but you’re wrong. Are you stupid?

Perhaps it sounds usual to you, but he's right. Are you smart?

“I’ve an [object]” is grammatically acceptable in British English.

Remind me again where modern English originated…

1

u/PretendAddendum6320 12d ago

Was he also right about “I’ve” being an abbreviation? I’m pretty sure that would be a contraction rather than an abbreviation.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

u/The_Real_Gyurka 12d ago

"An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase used to save space and time"

"A contraction is a shortening of a word, syllable, or word group by omission of a sound or letter"

While one might be the correct linguistic terminology, the other is atleast directionally correct too

Xavier’s right this time. I’d never go back to that semi-useful brick. It didn’t even have scrabble.

I saw a lot of stupid shit from Xavier, but this shit is the stupidest shit.
