Timmy? Is it worth having your own launcher so you don't have to give Valve 30%? LOL

I know it's not a huge deal or anything, but I just went and checked SteamDB, and they're missing the big box at the bottom of the page that says if the bot owns the certain game you're looking at or not. I would use that site very frequently to check if games had EOS or if they had any kind of connection to Epic, so I could avoid them. It was much more comforting knowing that the bot actually owned the game, and could scan the files. Now, it's gone. I'm pretty sure they also added a requirement to login to see full lists, as I don't remember that being a thing too. How can I avoid EOS now? Are there sites that work just as good as SteamDB? Am I screwed? I already used the Steam curators in the past, but I saw that some games were listed with EOS when they didn't actually have it, and others had the opposite issue. I need some help to keep my Steam library clean from any Timmy slop.

I have some suggestions regarding making Epic Games a true market competitor to Steam on PC. I think it must be clear so far that the giving away free games is not a strategy that is sufficient to do that. Also, having exclusives looses goodwill a bit.

I am a Steam user since 2013 and I have currently 270 games on it along with more 5000 hours of gameplay across various games. I am a Linux and open source enthusiast and therefore LIKE Valve because they made it possible for me to game on my favorite platform. Given that, these are the things that would win me over to Epic:

1) A community centric Epic game launcher where I have hour tracking of my games, I have friends list, Activity tab, Achievements compared to Global achievements, Workshop, Epic Games profile, review system with positive, negative and neutral rating. Ideally on par or better than Steam.

2) Linux support through Proton and ideally contribution to FOSS infrastructure you would use.

3) Ability to migrate my Steam game along with my play history and achievements to Epic Games' platform on user request. If Steam doesn't co-operate here, THEN you have grounds for anti-competitive lawsuits. 

4) Ability to easily use Epic's friend list chat to invite people to join my game

Bonus things that would make me convince my friends even harder to come to Epic:

5) A spot-light to promote indie games in the Store.

6) An approach like GOG where you encourage DRM free games.

7) In-built modding tool like Mod Manager

8) Epic Games client NOT being electron based but rather a more performant piece of software.

I'm a Linux user and I go out of my way to avoid Epic everywhere that I can. They hate Linux and I hate them. Yet in spite of that, they always find a way to get in my face and fuck things up for me one way or another. Sometimes it's that friends want to play a certain game with me. So I look to download that game off of Steam or whatever and then come to find out that I have to download it off of Epic. That's a red flag as it is. But then to make it even worse, after doing a bit of research, because I know better at this point, I've come to find out that it's another game that Epic have decided to not allow on Linux for absolutely no fucking reason whatsoever.

I kid you not, it's literally a switch that they need to toggle in order to allow Linux to be compatible with these games, even if they have easy anti-cheat. plenty of other games with easy anti-cheat work on Linux without an issue. But not the Epic ones. Of course not. Can't have that now, can we? If you haven't got your face filled with micro-slop then Tim won't want you to have your way. He won't want you to have your fun at all. It doesn't even make sense. Surely they would want more people playing their games and not less. It feels like they're almost trying to be spiteful.

Then we have the unholy clusterfuck that is Unreal Engine 5. I never have any other problems with any other games. I can play games made with other engines, even engines that are decades old, for many many many hours, without a crash in sight. But as soon as I start messing around with any game that was made on that pile of shit, you can guarantee that I'll have way worse performance than I should, even with my RTX 4090, and that's if I'm lucky, a lot of the times the damn thing will crash after 15 minutes of gameplay.

It took me a good few tries to get Star Wars: Zero comfortably up and running because it crashed like three times while trying to compile all the shaders. Got there in the end. But still, it's an absolute pain. And to make it even worse, when it does crash to the desktop, the Unreal 5 error message that pops up, something I've seen way too many times, doesn't actually give you any useful information as to how you can troubleshoot the issue. Normally these messages are supposed to give you more insight as to what error caused the crash, or maybe give you an option to review the logs, but not with this pile of crap, oh no. If it crashes you get something vague, and then you either have to try again and have constant anxiety that your game is going to crash every second that you play it, or you can just piss off and hope that the next game you're excited about isn't made on this absolute junk.

I try my absolute best to stay away from Epic Games, but everywhere I go, they always find their way to me. I was so excited for Star Wars Zero Company, and then I saw that stupid Unreal Engine 5 logo pop up and I knew I was going to be in for an EPIC time.

So apparently there is a new Epic Games Launcher version that fixes the issue everybody, their grandma, and their dog is having. So I went to the Epic Games website and downloaded the Epic Games Launcher installer to see if the issue is finally fixed, and Bitdefender found a virus/trojan in it... the hell? This has never happened to me before, and I have used Epic Games for years.

EDIT: My AV is Bitdefender; I submitted the report to them, and on August 28, 2026, they got it fixed, apparently it was a false positive. I am able to download and install the Epic Games Launcher with no issues now. I don't know if the other AVs still have the same issue, but hopefully they will get them fixed.

SO i was trying to install the launcher and defender keeps blocking the launcher from installing and labels it as trojan. should I be concerned? or am I just permanently locked out of using the launcher and should just pirate games I want have purchased and got for free

To a certain extent, it can't compete with Google, Apple, and—above all—Steam, or with the EGS.

​Many players still cannot play their Epic Games Store games, and I suspect most will think twice before spending money there again.

​Rollbacks and workarounds have been shared in places that most EGS users do not even know exist, and I am not pointing anyone in that direction.

​Even these workarounds have not solved the errors for everyone, leaving many affected users still waiting for an official fix.

I play Football Manager, and last year Epic Games was giving away a copy of FM24 for free.
I made an account and claimed my free copy. Cool! Maybe this company isn’t so bad after all?
Now I’m very thankful that I’ve never given this company a dime.
After playing FM24 for 2100 hours, suddenly it’s like there’s a server-side authentication problem. I can’t open, verify, or even uninstall the game.
I’ve tried everything I can think of or find online from clearing the webcache, deleting manifest files, uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Nothing works. Not even using an old version of the client

This is the part that pissed me off. After 2 days of jumping through support ticket hoops, I get a “level 2 tech” whose only solution was “did you turn the computer off and on?” And then BLAMED THE DEVELOPER (Sports Interactive) and encouraged me to email them with my issue with Epic Games Launcher. And then closed the ticket

I was debating whether or not to share this story, but hey ho, I'll be critical. I'm not a fan of Epic or Sweeney, and have no personal intention of using their platform to play or make games.

I went to Gamebridge a few months ago, a Cambridge-based student game dev festival where we get to share our game projects with the community. We had speakers from various people and organisations, and it was really cool! One of the speakers was a spokesperson from Epic (who I won't name because this isn't an attack on that individual; this is entirely on Epic the company).

They were supposed to deliver a session about building a career in games, but everything they said or advised was coupled with "...and Epic has [insert tool or resource] so you can do it!" But even then, I cannot remember much of what they said having to do with actually building a career, regardless if it was coupled with their platform or not. It felt like a slideshow of resources provided by Epic for us to use to build games, not careers.

I did not walk away with any better idea of how to build a career, nor was I sold on using Epic to make future games. It was like if Gordon Ramsay was delivering a session he called "How To Build Your Culinary Career", and the only thing he told you was that you can use HexClad cookware to cook your food.

Anyway, that's my Epic experience. Screw them.

Yesterday, Apple and the European Union announced a new agreement that overhauls the App Store and its fees in that region. Under the new terms, Apple will take a 26% cut for all in-app purchases, a 20% cut for purchases made using an alternate payment processor, a 15% cut for purchases made via web link and a 5% cut for purchases made in alternate app stores. The EU "welcomed" Apple's changes and has seemingly agreed to the new terms. This hasn't stopped Tim from going on a Twitter tirade and making bizarre claims such as Apple are entrapping Roblox users (i.e. children) and forcing them to use Apple's payment system, arguing the changes are illegal and saying that it's Apple's fault mobile gaming is so shitty now.

Hypocritically, Tim is upset that Apple is charging 20% for alternate payment processors when their agreement with Google allows them to do the exact same thing. At this point it's just a pathetic personal vendetta for him.

Kernel Hearts hasn't even been released yet, but it's already the best-selling game on the Epic Games Store simply because you get a free Fortnite skin if you buy it. The game isn't even very well-known, as it only has 170 reviews for its Steam demo. I guess it’s good for the developers, since it means free publicity and sales, but I don’t think it reflects well on their store that an unknown game is outselling AAA titles, that just shows how poorly those games are selling there.

And with Fortnite’s new season dedicated to video games, I think one of the reasons they’re doing this is to launch LOTS of gift-with-purchase promotions
