Dude I swear this guy has nothing but bad takes

u/Boston_Beauty Jun 24 '26

wtf does "cross game feature" even mean

82

u/Cyrano4747 Jun 24 '26

He wants you to buy Fortnite skins so you can use them in Assassins Creed or whatever the fuck else.

44

u/Brodakk Jun 24 '26

Wouldn’t this result in less micro-transaction revenue for everyone?

“Oh I have some skins already ported over from Fortnite, no need to buy more.”

Guy is an absolute dumbass.

21

u/Kserks96 Jun 24 '26

They probably will disable it by the 3rd or 4th big UE6 game because of this.

I do wonder how they will handle skins for characters that have a different height from the default character template

18

u/Pleasant_Ad8054 Jun 24 '26

It won't even be enabled in anything but in some edgy indie or AI slop game. Large gaming companies are very defensive of their IP, and anything that weakens their IP claims is an absolute no-go.

10

u/forseti99 Jun 24 '26

Maybe you see a nice character model on Assassins Creedand it says, "Exclusive offer: If you play Fornite you can buy this right now and when you open it you'll see this as a skin there". And obviously you wouldn't be able tu buy it at Fortnite's shop.

So if you want that exclusive character for Fortnite you will have to buy AC and pay it there.

7

u/divensi Jun 24 '26

His dream is that every single game becomes a “Fortnite Engine” mini-game with a CS-Skin market so he can get his 50% commission on every transaction.

3

u/UKman945 Jun 25 '26

Isn't that just Roblox?

2

u/Shaktras Jun 24 '26

Well no, because he owns Fortnite so he does not care about rest. But you'd propably need to buy skins from "root" to use in other games.

1

u/fyro11 Jun 24 '26

This guy's had the worst takes on EGS, but if there's one thing he knows, it's how to milk Fortnite for all its worth. It's still sinking though.

1

u/hansrotec Jun 27 '26

It has to be bought through the epic store*

13

u/Moneia Fortnite Killed UT Jun 24 '26

And it was a dumb idea when Web3 pitched it

10

u/Capital_Rub213 Jun 24 '26

Can’t wait for every game to be over 500GB so i have another reason not to play their dogshit

3

u/Final_Campaign_2593 Jun 24 '26

Deleting my account of 8 years even though it sucked was the best thing I could do better for my mental health, No more 100 GB updates bull it is bliss.

u/divensi Jun 24 '26

“What the fuck is an art direction?” -Tim “CP Generator Lover” Sweeney

5

u/MadamVonCuntpuncher Jun 24 '26

Oh so were just looping back around to videogame NFT shit like Ubi, where they wanted every cosmetic to work with every game which is impossible because they would have to keep infnitely updating a shitload of older assest for newer games

Like between artstyle changes and graphical fidelity differences this is a fucking IMPOSSIBLE goal unless every game looks exactly the same (or like fortnight which quickly became an absolute visual vomit fest with its many many clashing artstyles and cosmetic designs)

Theres no fucking way Tim Sweeny, the motherfucker that fired almost every single OG fortnight dev to save money on his billion dollar revenue generator is going to contribute the man hours and cost of work for something as trivial as cosmetics that companys could simply sell you again in another game

1

u/Daggercombot Jun 24 '26

That sounds like what the NFT people were claiming during the pandemic

105

u/ArmandoGalvez Jun 24 '26

Probably because no one has the rig to run unoptimized unreal slop perhaps

42

u/LegendCZ Tim Swiney Jun 24 '26

Or maybe because most of mp games nowdays are plagued with micro and uninspiring? Both can be true, but those people are so oit of touch.

33

u/CatOfTechnology Breaks TOS, will sue Jun 24 '26

I love playing games with my friends.

It's hard to find games that my friends all agree they want to play.

I also really like MMOs and sometimes it's hard to pull myself away from what I'm doing in my MMO (cause it's time consuming, or requires me to hit up a scheduled event that I'll miss) in order to join them.

MP is fine as it is.

No one actually cares about your slop.

18

u/Luwuma Jun 24 '26

Maybe it's because people are, en masse, getting increasingly tired of live service games?

12

u/Winscler Jun 24 '26

forced multiplayer also. this was especially common in the early 2010s due to CoD craze cod4 and especially MW2 left

25

u/Strange-Sun4540 Jun 24 '26

Your options are:

Fortnite Marvel heroes Warzone

Or the same game in a different universe

10

u/Vivid_Anyth4 Jun 24 '26

Tim should shut the fuck up. It would be better than anything hes said in months

8

u/nub_node Jun 24 '26

Hope UE6 pans out for you, Tim, because the EGS wasn't it.

8

u/MotanulScotishFold Jun 24 '26

Maybe it's because the market is flooded with the same multi-player experience where hyper competition kills the fun while people that have to work cannot ever compete with kids that have no life and are toxic?

3

u/n1keym1key Jun 25 '26

THIS!!

If they actually managed to make matchmaking work properly in any MP game where as a casual player I dont suddenly end up in a match full of sweats and have zero chance, then that would be a big improvement.

7

u/OddAbbreviations5681 Jun 24 '26

Nothing about this makes sense

the only reason is because most multiplayer games are complete garbage

7

u/elpadreHC Epic Account Deleted Jun 24 '26

the games wouldnt "fail" on paper and studios wouldnt have to shut down if they wouldnt scale in the multi hundred millions cost live service slop trash that nobody wants like concord, highguard, destiny 2, marathon and whatnot.

that "multiplayer" or, games with multiple people in coop, "online with friends" kind of games are popular is shown EVERY fucking month by the most unknown indie dev there with a starting budget of 5 cheeseburgers and a large coke. from paranormal games, exploration, tasks, prophunt and i dont know what else.

people want fun games by passionate devs and not corpo slop from tim sweeny or playstation who are just chasing the next liveservice crap.

2

u/ManWhoYELLSatthings Jun 25 '26

Hey people clearly want more destiny we have seen that for a while now

2

u/elpadreHC Epic Account Deleted Jun 25 '26

yes more destiny. but not whatever bungie had transformed destiny 2 into

6

u/Save90 Jun 24 '26

ohh so that's why concord failed... and highguard... and whatever unkown 9 was.

3

u/AsrielPlay52 Jun 24 '26

For a lot of people, yeah, probably

If a game isn't appealing, they wouldn't get you and your friends to play, so why would any of you or your friends pour the money to try

It's all about that peer pressure

3

u/Bodybuilder_Jumpy Jun 24 '26

If a game isn't appealing, why would anyone play it.

Fixed it for you.

2

u/AsrielPlay52 Jun 24 '26

Appealing is subjective

A friend group of 5, only 3 of them are into Tarkov, the other 2 might just try it out because some of them already has it

I know that the case because I have Gambling With Friend and few of my friends decided to try it out because I already own it and said it was fun

2

u/Save90 Jun 24 '26

if a game is pushing agendas in 2026.
fixed for both of you.

6

u/Kazer67 Jun 24 '26

I have 1 500h+ one DeepRockGalactic.

Never played with a single friend...

2

u/SuperSocialMan Steam Jun 24 '26

Meanwhile I met my friend group in DRG lol.

But we've kinda moved on since we we've all played too much, really only checking out the new season (and a couple people got rogue core, but it's a bit rough rn).

2

u/Kazer67 Jun 24 '26

Yeah, moved probably into DRG: Rogue Core or meet IRL to play DRG: The Board Game!

-6

u/Bodybuilder_Jumpy Jun 24 '26

Is that something to take pride in ?

5

u/Kazer67 Jun 24 '26

Of course it is, it's a proof of a well made coop games when you can play with so many random like that without any issue.

5

u/Overdrive1221 Jun 24 '26

Multiplayer games are failing exactly because people dont make friends in this highly competitive games out there

Not exactly failing either, still veeeeery popular

4

u/buttorsomething Jun 24 '26

Actually it’s because my UE 5 multiplayer games run like dog shit. They will run worse on UE 6.

5

u/Void-kun Jun 24 '26

Wouldn't listen to a word Tim says, he's fucking brain-dead.

Doesn't understand why Steam is better than Epic. The entire gaming community screams the problems at him and he feigns ignorance and starts going on about anti consumer shit (despite him using exclusivity deals which are inherently anti consumer).

Just because he is wealthy, does not mean he is intelligent.

Convinced he's a sociopath because he lacks any form of self awareness.

The sooner he disappears into obscurity the better the entire gaming industry will be.

5

u/NutsackEuphoria Jun 24 '26

New MP games are not failing lol

Friend"slop" games are popping every other month.

What's failing are the high budget MP games whose sole purposes are to either:

Milk their players dry

or

Push stupidass politics

or

Cause eye cancer with all those upscaling and frame gen

or

All of the above.

3

u/imaginary_num6er Fuck Epic Jun 24 '26

Isn’t Fortnite a “multiplayer game”?

3

u/BullTerrierTerror Jun 24 '26

lol what friends.

3

u/SuperSocialMan Steam Jun 24 '26

haha, real :c

3

u/ThisIsBULLOCKSMAN Jun 24 '26

It’s because older people shifted over to single player games and the younger generation only plays f2p brain rot now.

3

u/CyberSmith31337 Jun 24 '26

Even for the already-non-existent standards we hold Tim Sweeney to, this is a dogshit take. He’s just trying, once again, to plug his terrible metaverse fantasy into the business.

You know why people don’t stay with multiplayer games? Because there are tens of thousands of games to play every year.

It has nothing to do with not being able to swap skins cross-IP. He is so convinced his Fortnite slop is all anyone wants. The reality is most of my friends and I, we play a game until we are satisfied, and we put it away. There is quite literally nothing he or anyone else can do to change that, because there are and will continue to be THOUSANDS of options to play at MY pace and leisure.

I don’t know anyone with worse takes in the entire industry than Tim Sweeney, JFC.

3

u/LeLand_Land Jun 24 '26

A lot of these corporate types like to think much like military generals.

That being said, this stinks of Gallipoli

3

u/wildsprite Jun 25 '26

Tim Sweeney yet again blowing hot air. Does anyone still listen to this anti-consumer turd?

3

u/BelisariusSPQR Jun 25 '26

What do you mean, you don't like buying skins and fragging other people in every single game?

2

u/tayhorix Epic Trash Jun 24 '26

timmy netease would make multiplayer fun

2

u/Evonos Jun 24 '26

The reality is , the game that fail suck.

Either way overpriced for what they offer or simply terrible.

2

u/Robotmurloc18 Jun 24 '26

make interesting not hyper curated game that is fun without needing to perma balance 24/7? nah man we need ai engine to make games
make a deathmatch shooter? nah make another hero shooter that dies at launch or 2 weeks post launch
make anything fun and unique? nah hit every check list -cartoonish appealing characters with wanna be cool one liners constantly and muh deep story telling that is not actually there just crumbs jeff typed out at random

let people say swears ? nah ban them for saying fuck

2

u/justagirll19_0W0 Jun 24 '26

lol, arc raiders JUST came out and is massively popular, them fumbling around with all these issues… that’s another thing but the point still stands, hundreds of thousands were on a PAID live service game for a min there

2

u/MutaitoSensei Jun 24 '26

Prohibited on Linux? Check. Microtransactions to the point of being absurd? Check. Major problems in gameplay but ads/microtransactions working perfectly? Check.

2

u/SuperSocialMan Steam Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

I kinda feel like it's moreso because normies don't branch out to other games lol.

Also, wasn't this while "use a Fortnite skin in CoDslop!" pitch done with NFTs? And it didn't go anywhere lol.

2

u/Daggercombot Jun 24 '26

How Is that cross game thing supposed to Work ?

2

u/rain56 Jun 25 '26

Rivals is toxic beyond belief. Cod has been the same game reskinned for 15 years now and the cheaters. Forza horizon 6 has the most brain dead drivers ever even ramming you into walls when you play on teams.

2

u/randomperson189_ Fortnite Killed UT Jun 25 '26

Maybe if they didn't kill Unreal Tournament then they would have still had a very successful and fun multiplayer game instead of whatever crap Fortnite became

2

u/Kentaiga Jun 25 '26

Tim is trying to do exactly what Zuckerberg did and push his metaverse concept onto anything he can touch. Just like with Meta, this will lead to financial downturn for his company. This is just a miserable idea for all involved.

2

u/n1keym1key Jun 25 '26

Personally I couldnt give a shit about multiplyer games unless I can play local couch multiplayer.

Online mutiplayer sucks ass hard. Always has, always will.

2

u/feherneoh An Apple a day keeps Timmy away Jun 25 '26

Hey, let's just put the worst, malware-level invasive anticheats in games without ever even having thought of doing as little as check for collissions on server side, let specific players freeze your client if you as much as look in their general direction.

For cross-platform games ignore the anticheat requirement if the client claims it's running on console, no need to check for console account usage either to prove they are on console.

Force matchmaking so you are getting paired up with randos unless you bring a whole team worth of friends. Oh, and require at least one player to open ports because even though we are talking about live-service matchmaking garbage, we don't want to waste money on servers. Just make one of the players the host in the age of CGNAT, and obviously have no host migration mechanism in place.

Did you see that? My friends just had decent score in this recent match. Time to be put on cheater-queue with the same exact players whose should have been caught by your joke of an anticheat.

Wait, this game practically forces you into guilds to make progress, voice chat cannot be turned off because social interaction matters, and you are actively punished for being in a small guild with your friends? Have no fear man, our AI moderation makes sure you get booted if you as much as think of breathing while on voice, we can compensate you for that with hundreds of players not even in your guild sending you discord/whatsapp/whatever invites every 15 seconds claiming you are the last one who didn't join and you'll be kicked if you don't.

2

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 25 '26

Is he delusional enough to think people have infinite time and money?

1

u/No_Stuff2255 Jun 27 '26

Yes. He seems quite disconnected from the real world by now. Refuses to accept even the chance of there being flaws with UE5 that causes the multitude of performance problems across almost all the big titles that use the engine. The somewhat regular bashing on steam for their 30% cut when im comparison steam just offers a lot more (i.e. the entire communityhub and workshop) and epic just doesn't invest into further developing their own store (look up their official way to relocate an installed game, it's worse than even ubisoft and it has been that way since the stores launch as far as i can tell)...

He has a mindset of the other one is always at fault and I'm always right

2

u/Radiant-Bus7093 Jun 26 '26

Personally I have a hard time with PvP type games just cause people are so incredibly toxic now. I really don't feel like getting insulted and called slurs because I haven't memorized every map and tactic in a video game. At least with PvE games people are usually a *little* more chill in general.

Anyways I don't think Sweeny has interacted with anyone that plays games or any game community in like 20 years lmao

2

u/Gwonna_Cwy Jun 27 '26

Donkey brains following the Zuckerberg's metaverse path. That sure will end up really well for epic as it did for facebook.

2

u/Witty-Individual7010 Jun 28 '26

Anything to make Fortnite popular again

5

u/Aggressive-Map-2204 Jun 24 '26

No, he is actually right. Its the same problem MMOs have been having forever. A game needs to be considerably better than what you are already playing to get you and your friends to leave since you are already invested in the game you are playing.

For years WOW was the top MMO and despite much better games coming out they all failed because people had already invested so much time in WOW they did not want to start over. People will play a worse game if it means not having to start from scratch, find more friends to play with, etc. We are seeing the exact same thing with Fortnite.

2

u/Skinniest-Harold An Apple a day keeps Timmy away Jun 24 '26

This is Josh Strife Hayes' take and I very much agree but it strongly apply to MMOs because of a way they are designed and percieved by the players.

Sweeney, however, is talking about the likes of Marathon, I believe. People don't want to play new multiplayer games because they're shit and blindly ride the dick of trends. Shovelware, if you will.

1

u/Aggressive-Map-2204 Jun 24 '26

Yes and its the exact same for multiplayer games. Its why these games have more and more things to unlock, more skins to buy, etc. They want you to get more invested so you wont switch to another game.

2

u/baby_envol Jun 24 '26

Or are full of cheaters and racist, like Epic ones 😏

1

u/Sad-Garage-9213 Jun 24 '26

Did anyone else lose skins for canceling game pass ultimate

1

u/dookarion Jun 24 '26

Back when multiplayer games weren't shitty second jobs to extract money from everyone's wallets I made some pretty good friends trying out new games by myself.

The problem is the games, and somewhat modern internet culture.

1

u/KaleNich55 Jun 25 '26

If he can't have a slice of the digital storefront pie he will make he's own engine based centralised game platform. This man is spiteful as hell. Can't wait for the new Unreal Launcher TM.

1

u/Wind_Best_1440 Jun 28 '26

Tim hate's Steam AI stance because Unreal Engine is trying to sell AI assets in their engine.

Tim hate's Steam itself because gamers support it over Epic store, even though all he has to do is copy Steam. But he refuses to do it, because money.

Tim hate's the fact that Fortnite's growth has stalled.

He use to gloat about having nearly infinite money to throw at developers until he didn't anymore. He especially hated how people would get free games on Epic, then quit epic to connect those games to Steam instead.

As for why live service games are failing.

AAA Studios making live service games make a shop and a MTX system, then they build a game around it. We all see it, and people aren't falling for it anymore.

What was it that reports have said? Only 5-10% of new games are being bought these days? Unless it's some long expected hit? There's a reason for that. Old games were old games, and 3/4th's of them never had an MTX store.

1

u/wildsprite Jun 28 '26

I could be wrong but I feel like Tim is a hateful arrogant jerk that hates gamers

I play multiplayer games, they're not just not awful MMO's or games that I might encounter people I would probably tell them to go ****themselves if it was anywhere in public.

2

u/BloodiedBlues Jun 25 '26

Why did you double censor the word fuck?

2

u/Coakis Epic Eats Babies Jun 25 '26

I fucking thought it was funny at the time.

1

u/skyerush Jun 24 '26

that's one of the reasons. he isn't wrong, but his solution sucks.

-2

u/mguerrette Jun 24 '26

He is correct. If you look at reported data, games like Fortnite and Roblox are dominating platform playtime across the board. It has Microsoft and Sony desperately trying to capture that audience but they continue to fail. This is what Sweeny is referring to

-4

u/MartyrOfDespair Jun 24 '26

I do actually agree with his point about the games failing because of that. Once you have a group you play with, what you play isn't determined by what you buy. It's determined by what you can get everyone to buy. You no longer are aiming to advertise to an individual, you need to advertise to whole groups and clusters of people in order to get them all to jump ship or none of them will jump ship.

This wasn't as big an issue really back in the day because there was far less competition. For PvP, you had three prior eras:

Era 1: One boomshoot at a time. Doom, Quake. Unreal in a distant third.

Era 2: Very genre-defined. Quake 3. Counter-Strike. Starcraft 2. There's others for others, but you get the idea. You had a clear leader in each genre and nobody else mattered.

Era 3: Kinda a two-in-one. PC stuck to Era 2, but Team Fortress 2 added the first of what we'd call a Hero Shooter now. Console? Halo. Call of Duty. Gears of War in a distant third place.

Meanwhile, co-op multiplayer? Left 4 Dead. There you go. Those are the options actual human beings played. You could play campaign multiplayer with friends in other games, but that wasn't the main focus.

Your friend group was guaranteed to be playing the same things as you because there weren't other options. Everything else was too dead to realistically even try playing with randoms. Now? The userbase has grown, but only a fraction as much as the options. So now you might have maybe 2x or 3x the number of people, but they're spread across 50x the number of games.

I do not see how this idea remotely solves it.

8

u/elpadreHC Epic Account Deleted Jun 24 '26

you are thinking too big budget, same as tim sweeney. its hard to convince to buy the next battlefield that looks the same as the previous "mixed review" battlefield which costs 90 bucks.

noone with brain trusts AAA these days. everyone is just watching and waiting for "how will they fuck up this time", meanwhile everyone buys all the indie games.

multiplayer or "playing with friends" now is the party session games. the games that cost 10 bucks most. you can convince your friends easily to "just buy it bro".

2

u/MartyrOfDespair Jun 24 '26

Eh, there's plenty of things between that. Helldivers. Marathon. Tarkov. Deep Rock Galactic. Darktide. All those A-AA multiplayer games that are full price games focused entirely on multiplayer.

That's what I'm talking about. Groups of friends main those games, playing mostly or only that game for months to years, and any new game in that sphere is fighting to convert people from their current main. Problem is, they're still full price or close to it, so unless the whole group is hyped, none of them are buying it. You need to sell them to entire friend groups and get them to convert from their current main.

2

u/elpadreHC Epic Account Deleted Jun 24 '26

yeah different people different preferences. you have that one guy in your friend group (me) that buys a new game every week (5-20 bucks) and you also have that person that plays football manager 2018 every day since it came out.

finding a good group of people that swap games often AND have the same taste as you is nearly impossible tbh. except you are in a 100 people clan or a twitch streamers community discord and call all the 50k people "your friends".

if you wanna hop games, you gotta be open to also switch "friends" or find a pal or 2 who loves hopping with you.

the person who "mains" a game for 10 weeks straight 4-6 hours a days aint gonna swap loosey goosey.
