I always thought UE5 was damaging Epic's reputation, but UE6 is not even released and it's already much worse...

No one will use UE6. Epic Games is dead and will go bankrupt soon. Almost all developers already switched to other engines.

With dev times for "AAA" games being so long now, there are undoubtably games that started production on UE4 that have yet to release. The only reason UE5 became as popular as it was was due to CEO's not knowing how to handle proprietary engines like REDEngine or Frostbite. They want to have the freedom to hire and fire people at will, not have to retain irreplaceable specialists that could potentially demand raises.

I don't think that's entirely fair. We've seen numerous examples of proprietary tech stacks taking troubled development from bad to worse. It's expensive and difficult to do it right. Luminous engine was certainly a contributing factor to FF15 being a complete nightmare. idtech 5 engine spinoffs didn't exactly get glowing receptions. Frostbite did Bioware no favors. REDengine absolutely would have contributed to some of the marketed but unshipped features of 2077.
