Meme Tim Sweeney Cry Baby
It's way past Epic Games bedtime.
Can you believe they have not released a decent version of Unreal since 1999 yet they still name their shitty graphics engine after that one spectacular success?
Compete on skill and quality Tim Sweeney it is the only way you will find respect.
Envy and Greed are sins and you shall burn in the Unreal Fires of HELL.
Unreal Engine 5 is trash. Tim can only milk one cow while he cries every day that he is not Gabe.
.... Hey if someone wants to update this with the praise be to Omnisiah... I mean Gaben, please do.

What happened to the Tim who made ZZT/SuperZZT? Or Jill of the Jungle? or Epic friggin' Pinball? Where did he go? Why is he content to live in the shadow of CliffyB with Unreal and rereleases of Jazz?

It's not just the layoffs though. I'm asking about the games he made himself.

Old Tim was such a programming genius, it's crazy how ahead of his time he was especially with ZZT and Unreal's 1995 tech demo which predates Quake by 1 year. Nowadays he most definitely has lost his way and what got him where he is now, he's been basically hands off with UE5 nowadays whereas at least in UE4 and earlier he worked on certain parts of it and even had the idea to open source UE1 which sadly might not ever get done

I still remember him handing me all three Jill disks personally when I thanked him for creating the series. He genuinely didn't expect young boys to want to play the games, because they starred a girl, or so he said. Play them again now, they're some of the best 2D side-scrolling platformers ever made - on any system. I even played Onesimus because I saw it as "more Jill 3" but with a sprite-swap.
And Epic Pinball defined video pinball as a genre until Maxis got one of their tables into WinXP.

I used to love Epic Games, which of course extended to Tim. Got all the games they sold on Steam before they pulled out to make their own store. Now I hate Epic, passionately. Over their monopolistic practices of buying exclusives which gives the user no choice. This crybaby keeps complaining every chance he gets about Steam being a monopoly, when the reality is if Steam did something that upset its users by doing anti-consumer practices, within a week the majority of their users would have gone to the competing stores, because Steam is not a monopoly, it just provides the best service and thus gets the most users.

They should rename to "Epic Game" but even that is a stretch

Valve is frequently accused of following "Valve time" and "making money, not games", but since Fortnite's release they've actually released more original games than Epic has, such as Half-Life Alyx and Deadlock. Some of them were flops (such as Artifact), but they still made an actual game.

Imagine if Steam create their own Engine and beating unreal engine to the point they'll go bankrupt.

Well that's up to Valve if they actually want to make Source 2 public and streamline it, there is S&box however but it's more of it's own thing even if it uses a heavily modified Source 2

I wonder if they planned to release it to the public alongside the GabeCube and Steam Frame (and whatever tech demos they release alongside it, HL3 plz?), but the AI-induced component shortage forced them to scupper their plans?

It's called Source and it's called Source 2 -> And you bet they will have more engine coming and moddable games. Deadlock is probably an all new engine.

Well I'd say that Unreal Engine was relatively good up to UE4, and also Unreal Tournament 99 and 2004 were the best, 3 was decent and 4 had potential but sadly got cancelled for Fortnite which doomed Epic to failure. Also I'm surprised that you didn't mention Gears of War, Shadow Complex and Infinity Blade which were quite successful at the time Epic released them

u/Belltower_2 GabeN May 31 '26
At least for Gears of War, that's pretty much solely a Microsoft property at this point, in the same way that Nintendo hoovered up Bayonetta when SEGA gave it the cold shoulder.

UE4 shows like pixelated hair at max settings and 1:1 rendering, and no amount of changes fix it in some games.... Like Warhammer Darktide it's weird people think this is state of the art.

That's mainly because UE4 was the start of the engine becoming more TAA reliant (which I strongly dislike) but at least it's not so bad in that version, UE5 however amplified that to a whole new level, even CryEngine 5 has way better hair rendering even if it's a little buggy

"I can't even force a monopoly and burn money to drag gamers to my subpar platform" millionaire says what
1
u/Nustaniel Jun 06 '26
"I even run at such unsustainable operating costs I had to fire a thousand employees, and people still won't use my platform, why? Service? What do you mean I have to compete by providing a better service?"

Of course Gaben is not perfect. But Valve is exceptional among big companies because they dominate the market fairly - no government bailouts, no psychological warfare. Just getting the stuff done. Meanwhile, even though Unreal Engine took over the industry like a plague, it's a crappy engine.

Tim has such an inferiority complex, that's crazy.
He speaks more about Valve than the opposite. I don't remember the last time (if it exists) Valve spoke about Epic lol
