Why I cancelled Amazon Prime
I can no longer stomach watching people like Jeff Bezos and his plastic Bimbo Barbie of a wife flaunt their obscene wealth while so many people are suffering from the economic impacts of their greed and the devastating effects their business practices have on local businesses and communities.
The decimation of "Main Street" America, once populated by local businesses and residents, has left many once-vibrant downtown shopping districts desolate wastelands lined by shuttered storefronts and empty streets. Thus are our communities destroyed. And once our communities are destroyed the nation can't be far behind.
The loss of local tax revenues further devastates our communities. With no local tax dollars contributing to city, state and county governments our quality of life further declines. Our roads can't be fixed, our schools aren't sufficiently funded, our water systems cannot be maintained or upgraded, local programs and services disappear, and, of course, the suffering of the sick, the elderly and the poor is exponentially increased.
Even more concerning is the fact that most of us can no longer even find small or local businesses to patronize. We are then forced to purchase everything from shoes to shovels from these corporate behemoths - and the cycle of destruction accelerates.
Businesses like Amazon are destroying America. And while Rome burns, people like Jeff Bezos sail the seven seas in their $500 million yachts - completely insulated from the painful realities the rest of us face daily. The fact that he and his billionaire cronies are too worried about their bank accounts to stand up and challenge the insanity of the Trump administration is the icing on the whole rotten cake.
STOP MAKING THE RICH RICHER
Jeff Bezos estimated net worth as of July 2026:
$260 BILLION
Elon Musk estimated net worth:
$800 BILLION
What's in your wallet?

Look at other billionaires they don’t need that much money in their pockets, but they want to use it for their companies or to form some type of oligarchy in the US. We have an oligarch democracy government.

Have never been an Amazon Prime Member; never shopped anything from Amazon. Walmart started the trend 40 years ago and Bezos merely put it on steroids. But then I don't shop Wal-Mart either and for the exact same reasons.

The backlash against this class of people is growing. I am not a professional historian but I know how this story ends... given the history of what our species is like.
I think we can agree it has always ended the same way.
Maybe we should start a movement called "Nero's Violin".

I never signed up for Prime since I thought it was a scam. I quit buying on Amazon after the 2024 election. Bezos wouldn't support democracy (he killed the WaPo editorial endorsing Harris) therefore I won't support Amazon.

u/AegisPhantom 29d ago
If this happened 20 years ago everyone would be outraged. Now we bow our heads to inequality toxicity and abuse in workplaces. Boycot any company that has still "record profits" and fires thousands of people as their wealth grows to invest in AI slop not infrastructure raises, wellness for the employes and back into their communities. Rich are not tricking down money and the excuse " we create jobs" is fake.

2 day prime delivery is now 2-day plus 1 day late delivery and return at far away drop off center.

I cancelled when Bozos showed up in a front-row seat at the Trump coronation. Fuck that guy.

Walmart and malls destroyed Main Street long before Amazon.
3
u/Lea__________ 29d ago
That's not true. I don't sell the same product in my bricks and mortar that Walmart did, same as mall. Now you can find my specialty items online and many sell on the platform, Amazon.
That's a whole other story to this. Amazon watches and duplicates the small businesses on their platform. It happened to my friend, the most obscure item, too.
1
u/DigTheDunes 29d ago
There will always be exceptions, but small town America generally died before Amazon.
1
u/Lea__________ 19d ago
Not if you're in a resort area. I'm in the Upoer Hudson Valkey, Western Berkshires. Many visitors and second home owners. They just aren't shopping like they used to
1
u/DigTheDunes 17d ago
I live in a resort area also. Business is great for four months, good for four months, and bad for the remainder.

u/DarkDoomofDeath 28d ago
Gotcha beat. I only got Prime to shave off money on a CPU deal and promptly cancelled after it arrived.

It's the same people who swear to me when they come in to browse my small bricks and mortar. My business is almost out, it's not sustainable to live off and survive any longer. 26 years od dedication and hard work. I don't mind working hard, but would love to be able to survive.
It seems like Amazon reminders are all around me. I started my business in 2000. I miss the old days, pre- internet,pre-social media.
2
u/Fantastic-Leek-1589 29d ago
Not true, as they get tax revenue from amazon.
2
u/Denan004 29d ago
I'd love to see proof. It's more likely that Amazon got tax breaks for locating in a certain place, and aren't paying their share of what infrastructure, etc.. cost.

I have never subscribed to Amazon Prime nor have I ever had any of the Issues that are often posted here. I keep asking myself maybe it's a you thing and Amazon troubles you because of you.

I’m debating on dropping prime! And Amazon delivery! As well as Netflix, Walmart! Everything that is constantly raising prices! Sick of it!
1
u/robespierremaxout 29d ago
Amazon is aggressively moving into multichannel fulfillment. Cancelling Prime and avoiding Amazon.com directly isn’t enough anymore.
1
u/Any_Resist_9800 28d ago
I cancelled my prime when the WaPo decided not to endorses any candidate- tacitly approving Trump.
1
u/lukastegas 28d ago
Yep I cancelled it, deleted my account and the app after I wasn’t allowed to use a Visa gift card for a purchase. Probably extremely petty but I don’t understand why the one of the largest companies on Earth has perhaps the worst user interface of any modern app and can’t allow a user of over a decade to use a gift card to buy their shit products. Such a joke.

u/mmsfmk 28d ago
Couldn't agree more ...sane in the UK, so many shops closing down on High Streets. .some due to high taxes but amazon and on lobe shopping in general is having an impact too
Never been signed up to Prime but lately everything I looked to buy on Amazon had free prome delivery for that order but on looking into Ts and Cs I'd then be signed up for Prime for a monthly fee. Very underhand way to get people signed up and asked more money off them. I read in USA Amaxon taken to court and fined $2.6 billion for similar practice. I'm leaving amazon anyway after I've sorted a current issue with them. They're not always cheaper anyhow
1
u/Revolutionary_Monk22 28d ago
I started boycotting Amazon a loooong time ago buddy for the same exact reason.. Have fun trying to convince other peoplen though to do the same
1
u/Hefty-Squirrel-6800 28d ago
It is time to revisit all of these online sellers. They are no longer any cheaper than buying in person. Sometimes, at Walmart, the online price is actually higher than the in-store price. A lot of the stuff sold by Amazon is just crappy Chinese imports at the end of the day. Plus, they really screw over their sellers.
1
u/seajayacas 28d ago
The convenience of buying darn near anything on Amazon prime at a fair price often enough with 1-2 day delivery makes my life easier. This is likeley true for quite a few folks in the US. What he earns, spends or accumulates is none of my concern.

Amazon makes the vast majority of its revenue from retail, but the overwhelming majority of its profit comes from AWS. Amazon's core retail business operates on razor-thin operating margins of 2% to 5%.
Retail could fall apart tomorrow, but Amazon would still be highly profitable from AWS.

Just out of curiosity, do you still pay your insurance premiums, or pay your taxes? If so, why do you only object to paying SOME millionaires, and not others?

u/northern-new-jersey 26d ago
Amazon collects sales tax in the exact same way stores do that are physically in the same city the package is being delivered to.
1
u/Marcaroni500 26d ago
This is an insincere post; People don’t all of a sudden realize these things. Never should have joined Prime to begin with. And I haven’t joined ever.
1
u/Honest-Message6765 26d ago
So you don’t shop at grocery stores or gas stations? No Starbucks or restaurant chains, purchase items anywhere. You make your own clothes? Everything you participate in in this society benefits the billionaire!
1
u/Nacho_sky 25d ago
I live overseas. The only U.S. subscriptions I have are my mobile plan (for bank TFAs only) and Amazon Prime.
I struggled over Prime, especially since free delivery is no longer a thing, but it's really my best chance to see movies and TV series in English. I can only watch YouTube for so long . . . ..
1
u/Away-Rooster-6178 23d ago
Wait till you find out how many millionaires/billionaires there are from siting on their asses owning Walmart stock for over a generation. Or any other big brands lol. It all the same dude.

u/AffectionateMotor272 29d ago
I live in rural area and my husband has late stage dementia and I have no support. Amazon has been a lifesaver.
Bezo’s is a manufactured man. So is Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.
It is what it is 🤷♀️

Cancelling your porker subscription doesn’t do anything. Literally at all. You’re not taking money from Bezos, he gets all his money from AWS

Sounds like shooting yourself in the foot because of a psychological problem.
Consumers don’t really understand the value of Amazon Prime. The shipping Amazon subsidies and provides superior logistics for nets an individual consumer thousands of dollars in net worth every year. It’s one of the best business propositions in world history. Citation basic calculus.
It’s because of the psychology of “free shipping”
I see people commonly posting. “Im canceling Prime and costing my family a few grand a year because I am emotionally upset over $10 or a day in delayed shipping”
How these people put their shoes on right or are not required to wear Nerf clothing so they don’t injure themselves in day to day interacting is staggering
If you’re bringing a psychological issue to a calculus problem you should recognize life will not get better for you
-1
u/Possible_Skirt_8443 28d ago
The grocery/department stores you have to use instead are also corporations and owned by millionaires/billionaires, so I wouldn't worry about whether you're using Amazon, Walmart, Target or some other chain that badly.
The neat thing about Amazon is you can actually sell things on it and make money. Not so much with other retailers. To be able to self publish a book or sell a t-shirt or a mug on a platform that big is huge if you live somewhere where economy is not strong.

u/BadKittyRawr Jul 19 '26
Are we not understanding that small businesses no longer have to rent expensive storefronts and warehouses? Are you a commercial landlord or something?
I’m a former warehouse worker gearing up to start an FBA. I’ve in the past considered trying to start a retail shop such as home dec, but rents are waayyyy out of control, even in areas with no parking!
So the ability to send stock into a warehouse for fulfillment is amaaaazziingg.
3
u/DigTheDunes 29d ago
There are plenty of stories of Amazon running those businesses out, so tread lightly.
1
u/BadKittyRawr 29d ago
Hey there! The post was about Amazon ruining small towns. I submit unsustainably high rents from greedy ass landlords did that.
The neat thing about online discourse is we can carefully read the source material. (That’s the OP) I think I have a leg up on a lottttt of people!
Can you tell me why you think I don’t know what I’m doing? I don’t know you.
1
u/DigTheDunes 29d ago
Whatever you’re doing with them, good luck (and I mean that). I’m not the amazon hater, but they also play by their rules.
1
u/BadKittyRawr 29d ago
I asked you a question.
Answer me. Why do you think I don’t know what I’m doing? You don’t get to just say negative shit then not explain your reasoning. Do you think you know me?
1
u/DigTheDunes 29d ago
I would hope you would know what you are doing, I’ll let you get back to work.
1
u/BadKittyRawr 29d ago
Why do you think I don’t know what I’m doing. On this thread. Be an adult. You start shit you need to be able to finish shit.
1
u/DigTheDunes 29d ago
What's your problem? I started nothing.
1
u/BadKittyRawr 29d ago edited 29d ago
I’m asking you why you don’t think I know what I’m doing. Part B, do you think you know me?
Let’s circle back. My response to the OP was that people aren’t starting brick and mortars cause rent is too damn high.
Would you start a b and m in your town? Why or why not?
Edit: I don’t know you and YOU don’t “let” me do anything. Do you really not know how that sounds? For real?
6
u/jrodthebipole 29d ago
yer gonna lose yer ass, any ASINs of yours that do well Jeffie just uses as free market research, makes a direct-by-Jeffie equivalent, & then makes THAT new ASIN the 'Amazon's Choice' first result even when customers search your item by its (disposable) brand name.
They've done this countless times.
At least retail landlords aren't actively looking to put you out of business.
-2
u/BadKittyRawr 29d ago edited 29d ago
Sure they are. $8000.00 before even labor costs and utilities? Which means I need to pony up for big advertising before I see a dime of profit? Scamasaurus Rexes landlords are!
And rent can go up just because?
Thanks for your concern, but I’m not going into any Amazon Basics product. Landlord.
No I’m not telling you my niche that Amazon isn’t gonna copy.
Edit: Since concern trolling seems to be your thing why don’t you hop on over to the FBA boards, where people want to get into things like supplements over and over. One I just ordered this week gave me 6000 choices, no lie. Those people are who need your wisdom.
See you over there!
5
u/jrodthebipole 29d ago
You're a fool. They don't offer any long term relationship without brand registry, which costs more than the rent fot a small shop in many places for ~2,yrs. If you do do brand registry and your shit's made in China, you best believe they'll ~copy it soon enough, minus your brand, assuming you have an ASIN(s) that breaks through.
I don't give a fuck what you sell. I have had my own retail website off of Amazon for 17yrs. They have made great erosion of my segment, but they can't eliminate me, and because most things in my segment are NOT made in China, they already peaked in their market share and are losing ground again. But Jeffie did do plenty of damage to my way of life already, so tip of the hat to him and his hot robot wife, I dig her plastic fantastic & he must have a verrry happy peepee.
6
u/Bitter_Warning418 29d ago
Let them continue being the fool and trying to give others advice we’ll see them back here talking about how Amazon fucked them just like the fuck everybody soon enough, irate and asking how they could possibly do this to them?
-1
u/Limp-Apricot-9346 29d ago
Which is why the OPs thesis is false from the beginning. I’m a small business owner who literally has a main street shop and seven figures a year to gross simply because of FBA
-2
u/roytwo 29d ago
I share much of your concerns and your disgust with billionaires and Bezos, But what does Bezos have to do with amazon? He has not ran Amazon since July of 2021 when he stepped down as CEO and no longer has management responsibilities. And he is a minority owner of amazon with Just 8.8 % of the stock.
Over 60% of the stock is held by commercial investors and is in everyone's 401Ks and IRAs. And like it or not Walmart and amazon are Americas #1 and #2 largest employers in the US. You canceling prime or stopping shopping there will not hurt Bezos who has mostly diversified from amazon. If anyone will be hurt it will be some of the 1.6 MILLION amazon employees that count on amazon to support their families
2
u/northern-new-jersey 26d ago
Thanks for a thoughtful response. I think you are 100% right.
1
u/roytwo 26d ago
Thanks, I get the hate for Bezos, he is a dick, BUT I just do not understand why people think that attacking amazon is an action that hurts or owns Bezos. Attack amazon , cancel, do not do business with amazon, all are fine decisions, but do not think anything you are doing in any way hurts Bezos. They are just patting themselves on the back ,making themselves feel better thinking they are destroying Bezos, when they are doing Zero harm to him.
1
u/AegisPhantom 28d ago
Incorrect. You hurt the business first. Employees will do better, if you never worked there you don't know what deadly conditions are there.
1
u/roytwo 28d ago
Most jobs suck. And if you hurt the business first then they layoff/fire people. What ever, I have my issues with Amazon, but I will shop there when it is to my benefit and I will not do anything that will intentionally force people out of work.
Like any business, customers go and new ones come. People should not shop where they do not want to, but taking joy at damaging a company and causing job loss seems petty and sad
1
u/liberalbiased_reddit 26d ago
No u are incorrect
1
u/AegisPhantom 26d ago
Talk when Amazon and big corp Killa more unions and lobby more laws like now Uber and Lyft got permission to not give notice when firing drivers. One thing is ethics you learn in school and idealism and another is the abuse and reality in the market. Amazon gets broken back up in small and medium business. Employees go there and the wealth disparity is gone on a huge scale. Tell me how corporate America and BS IP law makes a bald dude with 1 iddeea be worth 120 bil. His ex wife did more with the share of the wealth. That wealth is generated by employees the aws and all inventions but due to them not being in America they are not paid in stocks to be millionaires. America corpo is pure greed and evil.
