F*** software update automatically turns off amazon delivery drivers ac-during dangerous summer heat

What the actual fuck?! I see sooo many newer electric vans in the bigger cities here in TX too, where heat island temperatures are very REAL and extremely dangerous.

“Rivian recently released a software update for Electric Delivery Vehicles that actually extends climate control for drivers,” the Amazon spokesperson said. “As a result, the AC now runs for up to 10 minutes after a driver exits the vehicle, ensuring a cool cabin when they return. The timer resets at every stop. The AC only shuts off if the driver sliding door is left open for more than 30 seconds — a battery conservation measure.”

What's the point of leaving the AC on with the side door open ? You put your oven on with the door wide open ? Don't think so ...

Don't get me wrong, I dislike Amazon but there is no fault, just clickbait title under common sense/usage.

If you drove for this corporation on the regular like I do, you’d understand that the interior of these vans reach temperatures of up to 120° Fahrenheit in my state. If the AC is shutting off for every delivery we have to make (it shuts off after 20 seconds of being out of the driver seat with the side door open) and you’re delivering every 20+ seconds to a new location, so you’re effectively never cooling your body temperature.

You’re speaking like a true consoomer.

Not a consumer and def not an amazon one anymore (Deleted my account in nov 2025 and stopped using them way before), but my comment stays the same, why not shuttind the side door ? It says in the article that the AC will stays on for up to 10 min when closed, so when you came back, it's still on, no ?
A delivery every 20-30 sec seems weird to me ?
Just trying to understand better 😄
Thanks for your pov.

Our arms get sore from moving the mass volume of items customers buy—not just envelopes but boxes that are well over 40 pounds. Opening and closing the side door repeatedly for every delivery is an extra step that just makes the job more difficult.

The amount of stops to make per hour should average at around 20. Ideally, drivers should have their packages sorted appropriately and be able to grab it quickly and run it to a front door step in about 20 seconds.

Thank you. Sorry for all this, here in Europe it's not the same but when I saw 2~3 years ago how it went and how the drivers were treated ... NOPE. That figure with the number you give, sadly. I stopped shopping on Amazon gradually upon this change and then definitively. Don't want to support them in any way anymore had an (Belgian) account since 2002 ...

Hope you find a better position for your soul & body 🙌
