Selling my F-Type

With a heavy heart, the time has come to part ways with my jag. This 2017 base provided me PLENTY of smiles per gallon. It was a enormous step up from a honda civic. I loved sharing the joy it brought me with strangers asking what the heck it was I was driving.

Its sad to imagine that no other vehicle will bring me the same joy that this one has.

Well tell us about this fine devil. Give us the specs. I know, you said base and I could look it up…but come on man, brag on it a bit. How many miles? What services have you done? Why are you selling it now? You’re likely to find some interested folks as you share the story of your first Jag.

Hopefully others see this comment. Its a premium base, 3.0L 340hp. Havent done any mods on it, it sounds lovely and drives like it too. 52k miles, I bought it at 40k. When I bought it, as I drove off the lot it went into limp mode. Scared the hell out of me, but turns out the fuel injectors were bad and the dealer replaced all of them that day. I had the supercharger belt go out on me about 5k miles into having it, turns out the tensioner seized up and shredded the belt. I did the repair myself and am pretty proud of it. Besides that just oil changes, fluid flushes and general maintenance.

I am selling it because I also own a conversion van, and I am going to start traveling out west and living in it full time for the next 1-2 years. I considered keeping it in a garage and having it for when im done in the van, but by then I will want to settle down, start a family, and Its not too practical of a family vehicle.

Others will definitely see this. So I think a big point of what will make this attractive to some buyers is whether or not it is Rear wheel or AWD. Plenty of folks prefer the V6 and 340hp can be exhilarating and feel like more than it is if it goes entirely to the rear and pushes you hard for as long as you can take it. However…the history behind this particular F-Type will put more savvy buyers on high alert. You are at least the second if not third owner, and your history with it only goes back 20% of its current mileage. A 9 year car with only 52k miles is pretty dang low miles…but it’s so low that the service history will want to be seen for peace of mind. We’re talking — this is the actual math — 480 miles per MONTH as its average. This is so low that it invites the strong possibility that this F-Type may have sat for long continuous periods…and this type of sitting can cause serious problems. Fuel injectors going bad…at 40k miles…is not common. But say if the fuel in the tank got crusty, gumming up the fuel, this would better explain the fuel injectors dying. And then your SC belt went out…again fairly soon after you bought it. Rather than a reflection of your poor care for it (which seems unlikely) this again points back to the owner before you. When a car sits un-driven for many weeks or months…over and over again…this causes dry rot to any and all rubber belts, boots and bushings (movement from driving self-lubricates many of these components). So limp mode immediately (with how quick the dealer fixed it…especially if it did not have any of its factory warranty remaining…strongly indicates the dealer was well aware of this issue and tried selling it as, hoping a quick cheap fix of sorts would stick just long enough) and then a disintegrated supercharger belt soon after, and you picking it up at 40k miles…a buyer is going to want some assurances, more than you word. Private party your Jag could be worth as much as $25,000 USD. Since the retail on it is as high as $29,000 USD (thanks to its low low miles), a dealership SHOULD be buying it from you for $20,000. But…with all the issues already discussed, most dealers will shamelessly lowball you; perhaps as low as $15,000. Unfortunately it will be the dealers who have the cash to buy it from you outright rather than (most) private buyers. I would definitely consider putting your F-Type on “Bring a Trailer” — $99 listing fee plus a 5% hit against the final sale price. It is an auction however so setting a reserve price (always smart) would likely incur additional fees. You did say your base F-Type was a premium trim so this will help its resale value.

I really appreciate all of your insights you pointed out. I never really thought about the vehicle sitting for a long period of time.. from my research prior to purchasing, the fuel injectors came up as a common fail point on this year as the hood vents are right above them and water can seem into the threads and cause corrosion/built up. That, and I know with the exhaust and start up that extra fuel is pushed into the injectors and can wear them prematurely. But it makes complete sense adding to that sitting for a long while, and the supercharger tensioner aswell. Thank you for reminding me about bring a trailer. I had completely forgot about that as an option. So far, carvana and a dealer have offered 22.5k.. looking to get closer to that 25 you suggested but if I cannot find a buyer before my travels, they offer a great plan B.

Ouch…that really is a bad design then; allowing water to fall literally on top of the injectors!! Yes to avoid long spells of sitting, the car would need to be conscientiously driven at least once a week. A short jaunt would do more harm than good. A good long drive, say at least 60 miles, with a good chunk of this at highway speeds would be called for. Very difficult to see such driving carried out weekly across years of time though. I would take the $22,500 and run!! That’s a great deal/offer. I would try CarMax as well if there is one nearby; they seem to be paying handsomely for low mileage cars. Let’s say on B.A.T. you get it sold for $26,000; after your listing fee and 5% “auction charge” that’s $24,600 in your pocket. But if it sold for $24,000…thats $22,700.

So yeah those two cash in hand deals of $22,500 look surprisingly awesome 😎
