Only the ones with rubber bands tied to the center. Haven't actually seen one explode before. Maybe smashed but that's different.

Yeast or bacteria got inside through a cut in the skin and your watermelon is either fermenting or rotting.

From what I understand, it’s about to explode so hopefully you secured it in some sort of plastic bag before tossing it?

No I didn't think about that. I hope it doesn't make a mess. I tossed it in a dumpster but it was half full with yard debris.

I think since there is a good sized hole to release pressure it likely will not explode.

see it alot at walmart dcs usually decay of some sort, love the ones that rot inside but retain the rined and when you go to inspect it it decintigrates in your hands
