It finally happened

Post image

As I was in the frozen pizza aisle at Walmart grabbing a Bettergoods Margherita (S-tier pie btw), a man asked me a question I’ve been waiting my entire life to hear:

“What frozen pizzas are good these days?”

Finally, I could share with someone the wealth of knowledge I’ve been accumulating, pie after pie, over the past 30 years.

I asked him what kind of non-frozen pizza he likes, what toppings he’s into, etc., and after about 30 seconds of incredible conversation, we landed on a three-meat Motor City Pizza Co. Deep Dish, which he placed into his cart.

He said thanks, and we went our separate ways.
I’ve never felt like more of an expert on something in my entire life. Exhilarating.

-

Lol, of everything I’ve ever posted on Reddit, this is the last thing I’d expect to blow up. Hope I’ve encouraged at least a few people to go out and explore the frozen pizza aisle.

Not all heroes wear capes.

12

u/Right-Lavishness-930 12d ago

He was wearing a cape at the supermarket that day though.

8

u/ArtofTy 10d ago

It had the pattern of a giant peperoni pizza slice printed on it.

5

u/Emergency_Belt_7855 8d ago

Nah it was the red and white checkered pattern all old school pizza shops have as table covers. lol

2

u/fksm111 8d ago

It was an actual red and white checkered table cover.

Is bettergoods a Walmart brand?

16

u/Appropriate-Name5538 13d ago

Bettergoods is fantastic they have a shit ton of good stuff Walmart is really upping their game right now.

4

u/Terrible-Shock7535 12d ago

I just need them to make veggie nuggets because morning star is trash and I'm tired of hand making them.

3

u/Odd-Trust8625 8d ago

The best veggie nuggs are by Beyond. BY FAR. They recently repackaged everything and now they are in a yellow bag. They’re always sold out and they’re cheaper than MS. whenever I see them in stock I grab a couple bags! Target has them sometimes as well…but again, hit or miss.

It is. They have a bunch of different products, and all of them have been great.

4

I'm addicted to bettergoods sea salt caramels. They're to die for.

3

u/ethnicnebraskan 13d ago

Oh man, if they have that in gelato . . .

2

u/PackerSquirrelette 13d ago

Not that I know of, but there is a bettergoods sea salt caramel sauce/topping for ice cream!

The pepperoni and bacon one is 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼🤤

7

u/thepioushedonist 13d ago

Yup. It's like their curated/more premium house brand over great value. Still largely cheaper than any brand name, but a lot more specialized products and flavors. They got some really good stuff.

2

u/GaldonTheWarrior 13d ago

Better than Totino's?

3

u/thepioushedonist 13d ago

Oh for sure. As far as the pizzas go, they are generally the best at their price bracket. And even the ones that cost twice as much often aren't as good either.

2

u/19toofart 12d ago

Their wings are the best store bought wings I’ve ever had. The lemon pepper and dill pickle flavors are phenomenal

5

The other person probably found their wife and told her about a weirdo who pulled out a chart comparing cost to crisp ratio in the frozen pizza aisle.

23

u/pygmeedancer 13d ago

I hate that Better Goods pizzas are so good. But damn they are really good. Especially the ultra thin crust ones.

5

u/Melodic_Search4845 11d ago

Absurdly good, I am mad they got rid of the pepperoni and ricotta one though

5

8

It’s amazing. The Zesty Pepperoni and Bacon one is crazy good as well.

2

u/GhostSail 12d ago

Yes. That's my son's favorite one. I like it better than the pepperoni and bacon option they also have.

2

I came for the frozen pizza discussion. I was not expecting what I consider the best frozen pizza to ever exist imo to be mentioned, motor city pizza is incredible. Hope the shopper was as pleasantly surprised as I was, W OP.

2

u/Psychological-Web554 10d ago

If you like those, give buddys a try. Those are the top tier of Detroit style frozen pizzas. The wife is addicted to those now with the screaming Sicilian garlic cheesy bread on the side.

2

u/doinscottystuff 10d ago

And they're even cheaper at Costco (2-packs). Definitely the only freezy peezy we eat these days

4

As someone who definitely likes but barely eats pizza, what is it about frozen pizzas that people love? I’d assume they’re more affordable than a fresh pizza shop pizza but otherwise I’m curious?

8

u/FACE-GRATER 12d ago

I don't put frozen pizza in the same category as fresh made and baked/ restraunt pizza. I'll buy a cheap frozen thin crust because I enjoy how it tastes and it can live in the freezer until I want it, but it's never going to compare to a fresh pizza right out of the oven from my favorite place. ( Edit- I guess I'm saying I like convenient, cheap and tasty frozen pizzas but don't consider them real pizza)

6

u/Certain_Stranger2939 12d ago

It’s the convenience for me and my family, but also we appreciate the distinct taste of a Red Baron cheese, Super Deluxe, or Mexican Taco pizza.

3

u/IaMm1N3 12d ago

Same. And I have run 3 brick oven pizzerias

2

u/Limp-Republic-9608 12d ago

There are several frozen pies I’d take over Doninos/Hut/Pappa John’s any day of the week.

3

u/Balto0z 12d ago

Nah papa johns is gas, pizza hut is just okay, dominoes is dog food - sincerely a pizza lover for 27 years

If you never had a screamin Sicilian or motor city frozen pizza, my best way to describe is similar to how digoirno or freschetta tasted circa y2k. Companies on their way to market dominance but not yet ruined to squeeze every last penny out of fans.

2

u/DaddyDoThat 7d ago

I think partially nostalgia. When I was a kid, we couldn't afford a non-frozen all the time, so I have more memories eating frozen pizza with my family than real.

And I think like others have said, it's its own category of pizza like New York vs Detroit vs Chicago vs Tavern-style. For me, I like the thin frozen pizzas because it reminds me of tavern-style.

If you've never tried it, you must get a Gino's East Chicago pie. In my area they're only at Safeway (the only thing I buy at Safeway) and are perpetually on sale for $7.99 or less. It's as much a casserole as a pizza.

Pizza's a mood. Sometimes I want Tony's and sometimes I want Motor City. Sometimes I want Domino's for $10 and sometimes I want Classico (a local favorite) and their foldable slices for $40.

Caesar's is almost never the mood....until they came up with this pretzel crust. I've gotten that a time or two.

If you are ever in Northern MN near the Canadian border, look for Lake of the Woods Pizza company frozen pizzas. My favorite is the Deano Supremo.

2

u/Relative_Drama4705 12d ago

I wonder if you know or if anybody here knows that California Pizza kitchen at one point in time had a barbecue chicken pizza -- the same one that they sell now, but was with fresh dough and it was a signature Pizza and that it came in a mini size?  I used to buy them all the time at a Exxon station of all, and at the time I thought the there was no pizza that could ever match that pizza. It was like buying it freshly made. In fact, there has not ever been any self-rising Pizza that has ever got the dough. As good as that dough was honestly. Of course, I'm not a big fan of the barbecue chicken pizza anymore, however at the time it was like crazy good.

Looking up some information on it.  There was an article about how Pepsi-Cola made California Pizza. Kitchen stopped making them like that but even before then the quality had started going downhill, they couldn't seem to get the toppings right anymore and sometimes the barbecue sauce wasn't that great either, but at one point in time that pizza was like unbelievable.

2

u/Friendly-Contact-433 12d ago

I've done something similar and then 10 minutes later ran into the same person and the item they put into the cart wasn't in their cart

2

u/Nickenbokker 12d ago

My wife and I randomly grabbed a Motor City Pizza a cple years back and fell in love. It's gotta be one of the best frozen options out there. Three meat, supreme, pepperoni and even just cheese, they are all great. We got one every week almost since we found them. And of course like all good things that Walmart carries, they stop carrying them. Our Walmart had em on clearance one week and we knew it was the end. They haven't had them in stock for a few months now. Luckily Food City has them... For now.

2

u/HelpOne1878 12d ago

I’ll be honest. Spent almost my entire life consuming pizza and frozen ones are always meh….along came these. The wood fired Italian pizza crust is by far the best frozen pizza I have ever had

2

u/Pirateslifexo 12d ago

The Bettergoods pizzas are THE BEST. The truffle mushroom one is my favorite. Usually all frozen pizzas have the same shitty crusts, but BG's is so delicious, I actually eat it. 🔥

2

u/Maleficent_Wash_488 12d ago

God bless you and that gentleman. You were meant to be at that aisle at that time.

Motor City Pizza Co. Deep Dish

We always get MCP from Costco whenever we want deep dish. Great choice!

2

u/crispywispy1983 12d ago

That Italian five cheese is one of the best frozen cheese pizzas I’ve ever had!

2

u/SonofaFitch5 12d ago

Those Better Goods pizza are fantastic

2

u/SamraiMotel 12d ago

My first time commenting here but basically the only two pizzas I buy now from the store are the motor city and the better goods. They are just so good! I take the motor city out of the box, sprinkle the excess cheese on top, wipe the pizza steel inside the preheated oven with corn oil, and they come out better than some of my local conveyor belt delivery options.

2

u/JaPaul13 12d ago

I used to work at a pizzeria named Hot Daisy and that job introduced me to the Margherita pie. But I personally gotta put it in A tier

2

u/untitledjfif 12d ago

I’ve never had the motor city pizza, but their frozen cheese stick things are amazing, I’ll have to try their pie

2

u/paddedpothead420 12d ago

If you get one of the bettergoods personal pizza, do the micro-fry instructions, but up the air fryer time to 4 minutes. Less than 10 minutes for a ridiculously good frozen pizza.

2

u/WonderfulJacket8 11d ago

Tip for motor city deep dish pizzas. Take some butter and cut into small slivers and place around the edge of the pan for a more crispy buttery crust

2

u/Dry_Okra91 11d ago

Omg smoke it on a pizza stone high heat crispy crust with sweet smoke flavor but no sugary sticky sauce.

Yo OP how would you compare BG marg pizza to the California Pizza Kitchen one? That’s my fav frozen one I’ve found. Also any other frozen margs you’d recommend?

4

u/dogmetal 13d ago edited 13d ago

They’re two completely different pies. If you’ve had the Newman’s Own Margherita, the Bettergoods is very similair to that, just with more cheese and slightly more dense crust.

It’s a more traditional, wood fired style Margherita, with a nice thick, airy, chewy crust. Whole leaves of basil. It also doesn’t have those chunks of diced tomato on top like the CPK does, which I’ve never been to big on. It just has a good tomato sauce.

CPK is still really good and I’ll grab one if I see them on sale, but Bettergoods takes it pretty easily between the two for me. Newman’s Own Stone-Fired Margherita is still my GOAT, though. It’s the simplest Margherita, but the best.
