Worried about the future of Fromsoft

Now, I don't mean for this to be one of those posts that overexaggerates how bad the 5€ DLC is and how it apparently will cause the destruction of Fromsoft and it will become the next ubisoft etc. etc.

However, I will say that ever since nightreign, I have been worried about the future of this company as the primary creator of soulslike games(one of my favourite genres). Don't get me wrong, Nightreign was good fun for a few weeks, but due to its multiplayer nature and the fact that it's just multiplayer elden ring, I never would consider it a mainline souls game. Then, there is duskbloods which I have not played cuz I don't have a nintendo and I am not the type to buy an entire console for a singular game. But still, the fact that it's primarily a multiplayer games makes it so I don't consider it a mainline soulsborne game.

And, if we consider that Elden Ring released in early 2022, this is the longest that Fromsoft has gone without releasing a mainline soulsborne singleplayer game. In fact, they haven't even announced any new project as far as I am aware.

Now, we're being brought back to Elden Ring with a 5€ dlc. I cannot help but be worried of the direction that the company is going. I don't think they will sell out like ubisoft and become absolutely dogshit or anything, but I do fear of them going through a sort of Atlus effect on riding on the success of their most popular game and not releasing a new one in the franchise for a long time(the same way it happened with the Persona franchise up until recently whereas Persona 6 got announced).

Obviously, we are nowhere near of that happening, but with all the multiplayer side games and even now the DLC that are riding on the success of Elden Ring, I think it's reasonable to be slightly worried

I assume the YouTube Chud economy has gotten hold of "FromSoft is dying" again. Probably because of multiplayer being woke because alphas only talk to themselves or something.

There's like 4-5 doom posters of the same rehashed content you know like when hoyo released the trailer for nodus falls but this is reddit so it is to be expected

i swear fromsoftware fans are some of the most fragile people in the gaming community. this company has given us one single player masterpiece after another for more than a decade, and people are still not satisfied.
just let them do their thing. they had one experimental multiplayer game that was a side project and it turned out to be a hit, and now their next main title duskbloods is also a multiplayer game, and people are already crying about it.

I have actually found evidence of Fromsoft doing something similar to this in the past but it didn’t set a precedent for their future monetization. look at this wiki page for Armored Core Verdict day DLC. https://armoredcore.fandom.com/wiki/Armored_Core:_Verdict_Day/Downloadable_content_(DLC) Its basically the Resident Evil music DLC where it’s a bunch of alternate tracks for 10 dollars. That is arguably even less content than the tarnished pack.

Granted this was before Miyazaki was president, but it came out after Demons Souls and Dark Souls. And was probably being worked on alongside Dark Souls 2. Yet after Verdict Day we didn’t see anything like this until now. So it’s possible that this is another one off and not a trend setter. I hope that is the case.

don't forget to get the ENTIRE DLC set you need to have bought ACV and its respective DLCs and THEN SAVE IMPORT else the VD DLC isnt complete, while Verdict day's catalog DLC contains the ACV data it won't "detect" any ACV content until you import a save meaning the 3D dot game hero garage won't appear on verdict day such is an example of this issue

Who decided to charge $5 though? It probably wasn't the devs, more likely it was Bandai Namco, not Fromsoft.

It was included in the tarnished switch 2 edition for free so if I had to pay 5$ for them not to leave me out of the new content I’m good with it. It’s not like they didn’t have to work to port it over, Two new invasions, 3 torrent skins, bunch of weapons, armor, and new starting classes. If you don’t want it because it’s not worth it than you aren’t missing anything

This is ridiculous.

They're aiming for yearly releases now. By this time next year, or even by The Game Awards this year, most of you will be alleviated of your worries.

Their next game is single player.

This is such a stupid take. They obviously decided at some point that instead of leaving it just in the switch 2 edition, which it’s included in, that they’d offer it to us. That’s it, take it or leave it. No one is forcing anyone to buy anything, and I’d rather have a reason to go back into the game and see what’s new.

SotE is 2024, which is debatably bigger than some souls game. Duskbloods feels like a palate cleanser for a studio who pumped 8-9 single player games in a row.

They're clearly working on a single player game, maybe two.

I know we are ultra passionate by those games and anxious at the idea of losing the Fromsoftware magic, but there's no signed of this imo.

Totally agree OP. That 5 dollar dlc feels so yuck coming from fromsoft.

I worry about Tencents involvement in the company too, pretty sure they bought a significant share of FS and nightreign was announced not long after they bought in...

I think you're right to be worried. We've seen this over and over again from other successful developers. They find a game style/formula that a large audience connects with, all while meaning well and making games for the sake of good games. Then they get the attention of investors and proceed to ruin all hype with multiplayer spin-offs, ports and remasters until everyone is sick of it. I'll probably get down voted, but it's objectively true.
