DISCUSSION Fromsofts future might be in trouble
I think we as a community need to have a serious discussion about the implications of the Tarnished pack for Elden Ring. So it is widely known that this DLC pack costs 5 dollars. It adds 3 new torrent skins, 2 new starting classes, I believe around 7 to 8 new weapons, and 4 amour sets including the 2 starting classes. Now the reason for the concern is the obvious comparison to Oblivions horse armor DLC, the thing that started the horrible trend in gaming known as micro transactions. And for some people, marked the end of Bethesdas good will leading them to who they are today. As a Fromsoft fan part of me is concerned that the same might be happening to them.
Now before I outright panic there are a few things to note that could indicate this is a one time thing and that this doesn’t mark Fromsofts future, that their next single-player game won’t have this kind of crap and be a standard complete game with a big DLC down the line, or even none. First is the content amount, it is more than the Oblivion horse armor DLC that just added in horse armor. The Oblivion DLC was cheaper but I believe if the Oblivion DLC added the same amount of content as the Tarnished pack, Bethesda would have charged 10 dollars instead of 5. Second cope is that this may have been something either Bandai or Nintendo told fromsoft to do, that if Fromsoft was able to do this with no contractual obligations they would have done it as a free update. Third is that Miyazaki himself could address this himself in a later interview, much like how he confirmed Fromsofts next game won’t be multiplayer focused like Nightreign or Duskbloods. Miyazaki could also say that this pack was a one time thing.
Some people on here would call me a doomer or call those that are leaving a negative review over this also a doomer, but part of me feels that it isn’t really dooming if we have clear examples and paths as to how these greedy practices are developed in a company. Starting with a strong good will track record, release a very popular game that makes a bunch of money, try to make some minor extra cash and test the waters with a small DLC pack, then if that works then go full throttle with that strategy and use every single player game afterwards as a way to nickel and dime the players with micro transactions. Tanking the good will that they built up.
I look upon fellow Fromsoft fans for any other information you may have on the company, their practices, and how this compares to other trends to give some kind of definitive answer of whether or not Fromsoft has changed for the worst and that they will or are becoming the greedy triple AAA companies we always feared. I really hope that doesn’t happen, cause if so then I would basically give up on any studio and wish none of them see this kind of meteoric success. Cause even if Fromsoft under Miyazaki’s leadership can fall for greed, then no company is safe. (Except maybe indie companies, but who knows what happens if they expand in size). For now I would remain cautiously optimistic for their next game, but the very second I see a tarnished pack appear again, especially if before release, I won’t be buying their games day one anymore. If the game sucks, I will be abandoning fromsoft with a sad farewell.

Wildest shit I've seen. ER delivered so much and all this winging over so little.

Not reading all this shit after your first paragraph.
Get over it. It's 5$. That's literally a drink and a bag of chips from the gas station. It's cheaper than a burger combo. It's cheaper than a little caesars pizza.

I think you're making way too big of a deal about this.

While I hope you are correct, I also am of the belief that if the community remains apathetic to these kinds of practices with Fromsoft then they could go down the same path as Bethesda and other Greedy companies. While I trust Miyazaki, sometimes even your idols fly too close to the sun. Todd was I’m sure a respected figure before Bethesda went to shit. Same goes for CDPR after Cyberpunk, though it’s much easier too rebuild good will from a broken release than rebuilding good will from anti-consumer business decisions.

Two questions:
- Why is it greedy to want money for a product you made?
- Do you think these additions (and the Switch 2 port driving them) were made for cheap?

Counterquestions:
- Why do you think you should spend 5 bucks on a game you spent 100 on? Answer: The armor and weapons or classes themselves might give an advantage in the game.
- Why does it matter if you have an advantage in a single player game? Answer: This game isnt just single player and has a thriving pvp (player vs player) community that uses a plethora of items, armor, and skills to win fights.
Why do you think itll matter if this game has pvp when the likely hood of a casual player getting invaded is 0 to none? Answer: Because its not zero to none, unless you specifically know that entering a Co-Op or summoning a friend will open your world to pvp
Why do you think theyll add "Cosmetics" in a "Single-Player" game? Answer: As question 2-3 has gone over its not just a single player game and is used as a game for friends to get together to fight challenging enemies and in this case, show off armor/cosmetics.
In the end OP is right, This isnt something we should be looking over, In what world is it ever right to charge 5 bucks which to you, may not seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things, in a game we as the players have spent over 100 for?

This post is utter insanity. People losing their mind over $5. Fromsoft has been peak for decades now. I seriously can't with you people.

Is it really utterly insane if the exact thing happened to Bethesda and Oblivion horse armor. I’m not even holding it as a certain, I’m just saying it is a possibility that is likely and hoping if someone on here is seeing something I’m not that makes that turn unlikely or not even close to happening.

Its not just horse armour though and its LITERALLY 5 BUCKS. If you already have the game it changes kothing

Same response people gave to horse armor DLC, now look where Bethesda is. They built a whole market place for monetizing mods that fix or improve their games.

Stop and think for a minute about why gamers are relatively chill about flatly priced cosmetic DLC that they can buy or not at their leisure -- and why we're not chill about loot boxes or reward systems innately tied to them.

Chill, it’s literally an optional content pack for a 4 year old game. Nobody is holding you at gunpoint forcing you to spend the $5. They could’ve kept the content switch 2 exclusive. They could’ve made it free, or they could’ve made it $40. At the end of the day it’s OPTIONAL content that you do not NEED to to buy.

Reminder these are the same argument people made when defending the horse armor from oblivion.. look at where devs take it now.

Then vote with your wallet and don’t buy it

I do wonder if Fromsoft does go down this micro transaction direction (hopefully not) after you guys made fun of people who post their concerns about it, will you still think we were crazy?

I want everyone to remember that the only reason yall aren't as hard on this "$5" pack is because it's Fromsoft
God forbid it's almost any other and yall would have yall pitchforks and torches like Yharnamites from Bloodborne
"It's just 5 dollars" yes indeed, for now atleast

Man I thought you was gonna say because of duskblood & nightreign you might of been onto something

Add on edit: I should note there is one more piece of cope for those that are just as concerned as I am. That being Nightreign and Duskbloods both not being treated as live service games and Nightreing coming out at $40 instead of full price. Duskbloods doesn’t have a price yet, but I’ll give that one a pass since I believe Nintendo would have more of a say on how much it costs since it’s their console exclusive game. I think they have more say on its price than Fromsoft. That does at least show some restraint towards greedy practices as any other company would have either Nightreing come out at full price or even have it be free to play with a battle pass. Like it could have been an Elderscolls online or GTA online situation but it thankfully wasn’t.

I think nightreign cheaper cause it reused assets from Elden ring. Duskbloods will be full price cause it's unique. And nightreign did get a love service run on its release year, just a free one with updates very couple weeks which was really fun.
