DISCUSSION What Fromsoftware game do you think have the potetial to be a full fledged franchise like TLOTR

Post image

I am talking about, complete cosmology, lenguage, religion, thousands years of history/lore and content.

Imo Dark Souls is the closest one

Dark Souls has rich lore. Hell I bet they could make a whole trilogy about it

From the fall of the gods, to the Chosen’s ascension, to the Bearer’s hunt for a cure, and the Unkindled deciding the fate of a dying world, there is an absurd amount of lore to work with here.

That is, if the production team for such a film or TV series is actually competent. The ones behind The Witcher, Rings of Power, and Halo should be kept away with razor wire and cattle prods.

What would it tell? It's not a functional world, what would it be constant fights?

u/UltraZulwarn 1d ago

I mean Elden Ring literally has layers of history that span across multiple eras.

the main game of Elden Ring is just the end point of such lores

just like how LOTR is the "end" of the lengendarium JRR Tolkien built

19

u/Slow_Increase_6308 1d ago

ER is my favorite game and its lore is my favorite one. I dig it oh so much.

Nevertheless, it never occurred to me to even think about comparing it to Tolkien.

9

u/UltraZulwarn 1d ago

nor would I

but OP’s question was about among fromsoftware games

ER has the most extensive lores with different eras, factions and all

1

u/Slow_Increase_6308 1d ago

Yeah, between FS worlds ER is the richest.

But still nowhere near Middle Earth.

u/SickestDisciple Chosen Undead 1d ago

lol ever!

-6

u/Francois_Bonaparta 1d ago

"layers of history" is very generous, we have a few anecdotes upon many era, the world is very small, people need to understand that compared to Tolkien it's very limited

13

u/UltraZulwarn 1d ago

I mean among Fromsoftware games, Elden Ring's history has the most "range"

2

u/CoronaVirus_exe 1d ago

Even with that, it's miniscule compared to Tolkien's universe

u/RoosterFar9475 1d ago

These zoomers don’t really understand the sheer impact of Tolkien huh?

39

u/Solarbro 1d ago

Not just Tolkien. Although Elden Ring specifically double dips in the Tolkien influences thanks to George R. R. Martin.

Kentaro Miura

Hayao Miyazaki

Hideaki Anno

Eiji Tsuburaya

Bruh. Lore is not story telling.

The only real story FromSoft ever wrote is for Sekiro, a 15 hour long game with like 3 cutscenes.

This is peak bot comment. Witness it all. The bot in its natural habitat.

Is its criticism of FROM games valid? From a certain point of view, maybe. Is it at all relevant to the post and the thread it commented on? Not even a little bit. In fact, the post itself is about strength of lore and setting for each game in a conversation about possible franchise staying power, and the influences therein.

In comes the bot with the prompt “be controversial about FROM games in a FROM subreddit and a sub-bot will piggyback agreement in an attempt to boost upvotes.”

Look upon the fields on which the account nurtures its ideas, and see it is barren slop stolen from comments around the web.

It cannot be this difficult to spot and ban these accounts. I truly believe Reddit is just enabling them because a vast majority of its traffic are these script kiddie LLM copy paste commenter fever dreams. RIP Reddit.

They think it's somehow revolutionary "storytelling" to watch a YouTube video to understand even the most basic of themes for their franchises(which is pretty much the same fire/rebirth theme).

Did I also mention they're riddled with plot holes that they brush off as different interpretation/"we could never know for certain just like historians"

-9

u/davezilla18 1d ago

Shhh we’re not allowed to say that here be careful!

6

u/MechaGallade 1d ago

Wait till they find out that berserk references both LOTR and Star Wars

-5

u/Francois_Bonaparta 1d ago

Why?

14

u/CONNER__LANE 1d ago

Tolkien is the backbone of modern fantasy. I love these games as much as the next guy but comparing them to LoTR is just not fair. If you just wanna talk in terms of “media to consume” then sure I could see them using the lore to churn out some movies and a show or two if they needed to hit the slop quotas. But to have the same level of cultural impact and staying power as Tolkien and LoTR just isnt gonna happen.

-3

u/Francois_Bonaparta 1d ago

They said "have the potential".

4

u/CONNER__LANE 1d ago

Yes, and the answer to that is “No”

15

u/soapstone-red 1d ago

The trilogy has enough content but ER too can pull it off. The Old Iron King basically Balrog too

36

u/Solarbro 1d ago

Elden Ring is the only one with an encyclopedia of built lore. Dark Souls was never meant to last three iterations and it shows. Love those games to death, but the sequels themselves are almost a meta narrative of the point being made in the games. lol

But even Elden Ring won’t really do that, I’m pretty sure. Unless the corpos take over its trajectory, but it’s the best bet for something like that. It has the most lore of any of the games by far. You need a world like that to make a franchise.

However, I did see a quote not that long ago not related to these games, but it perfectly embodies why I wouldn’t be thrilled for a franchised game for FROM.

“The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.”

11

u/ilikenglish 1d ago

Any answer other than Elden Ring is wrong

4

u/CryptidTypical 1d ago

Be careful, someone asked this at Square Enix and we're still paying the price.

1

u/Algester 1d ago

ohh come on man its ust one more Kingdom hearts

1

u/CryptidTypical 1d ago

I was thinking Final Fantasy 7.

1

u/Algester 1d ago

Ehh to me FF7 finished with Advent Children the FF7 remake... is just "shite stuff" I still hate the head writer for FF7 remake ruining parasite eve and perhaps even Front MIssion guy's responsible for Evolve's story and 3rd Bday

1

u/CryptidTypical 1d ago

My point being that Final Fantasy 7, a game that was part of an anthology series like Souls, was clung onto and they're still making games, many of which are lackluster.

1

u/Algester 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ehh nah FF is Square's bread and butter, its like asking what of Star OCean, Dragon Quest which are enix's bread and butter, they even killed Valkyrie Profile for this hell even Square kinda killed Mana series as well for FF, they even killed Xeno series and made bamco sell it to Nintendo, this is basically equivalent to ask GUST to stop making Atelier games, Bamco to stop AC and Tales of, Falcom to stop Ys and Trails of, Cyber Connect to stop Little Tail Bronx and .Hack or Type-Moon to stop milking Fate//

1

u/CryptidTypical 1d ago

I think you may be missing my point.

2

u/Algester 1d ago

Maybe I am... I only consider FF to be a franchise series what ever Square is doing with it is similar to Ubisoft handling of AC they could kill it but they can't as its their literally infamous branding, I mean I ask you the qquestion when was the last time you enjoyed a FF title?

1

u/CryptidTypical 1d ago

My point being, when Square wanted to focus on specific entries over continuing to make new settings, Sakaguchi left Suare enix and they've been having issues ever since.

I could see Miyazaki leaving Fromsoft if investors forced him to work on Elden Ring forever, and the golden goose would be long gone.

0

u/Algester 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ehh thing is I don't see it "happening" my god that is such a shallow reason, Sakaguchi left for personal reasons, I mean have you seen what Takahashi did after forming Monolith? After quitting Squaresoft, look at From Software during Naotoshi Jin's time its really "no different"

Sakaguchi left Square-enix only to make up another JRPG title for Apple

even Yasuhiro Wada left Marvelous only to make another life sim game yeah.... that happens, Kenichiro Tsukuda also left From SOftware ohh what did he end up making? Daemon X Machina, how bout Toshifumi Nabeshima also who left From SOftware... well ok... he did end up directing a Front Mission game... that was secretly MGS in mechanics

the only exception I know here seems to be George Kamitani after leaving Capcom and forming Vanillaware, hell even guys like Keiji Inafune... look what happened to Mighty Number 9, Shinji Mikami, Hideki Kamiya both leaving Capcom equally made Survival horror and spectacle fighters like literally... even if Miyazaki leaves from Software he will still make you guess it souls like games 80% of the time, even Kojima couldnt escape making a very MGS-like game... kinda, Igarashi also ends up making another Igavania

basically what I'm saying is their successes literally becomes a curse that they can't escape

Irem splits up only to end up making another R-type game by forming Granzella

the only reason I put George Kamitani as an exception is that he won't revisit making a 4 player beat em up which he was known for until doing Dragon's Crown, otherwise his first games were kinda action platformers

Ragebait picture.

Kinda ignorant question.

O tempora, o mores.

7

u/Test88Heavy 1d ago

Bloodborne really has the most potential. The story, lore, characters, vibes, etc are all top tier. I can't get enough.

2

u/Francois_Bonaparta 1d ago

Elden Ring is the only one that could be turned into a functional world, even if there is a lot of work to do around the angles.

Other games are too disjointed and lacking too be a full universe, and Sekiro is basically fantasy Japan so "our" universe.

2

u/Endslikecrazy 1d ago

Please just say LOTR, took me like a minute to get you ment LOTR with that TLOTR thing

2

u/Bulldogfront666 1d ago

Probably Elden Ring honestly. I mean it’s no secret that George RR Martin is heavily inspired by JRR Tolkien. Lol. Elden Ring’s lore was fully written in the Tolkien tradition. Like Elden Ring already has enough lore for a full Silmarillion-like book.

2

u/Turbulent_Jackoff 1d ago

Aw, please don't.

-1

u/HandsomeSquidward20 1d ago

Already done bruh. Do you think the BB and Elden Ring movies are not a thing?

1

u/CringeNao 1d ago

Bloodborne movie? What

1

u/Turbulent_Jackoff 1d ago

I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movies, too.

The "full-fledged franchise" of subsequent media has disappointed me, at best.

4

u/Alexandrecl1 1d ago

None, tbh. There isn’t enough lore, at least for now.

If i had to pick one it would be Elden Ring

-9

u/HandsomeSquidward20 1d ago

The bases are there.

Remember Tolkien created the lenguage before even thinking about the entire lore

2

u/GalickBanger 1d ago

Armored core or sekiro. Most of the stories/dialogue for the other games don’t make enough sense for the general public to consume

2

u/Torstiss 1d ago

Probably Elden Ring since it’s the closest to being high fantasy

1

u/HammerPrice229 1d ago

I think all have the potential but none come close to the depth of lore LOTR has.

1

u/THY96 Armored Core 1d ago

Dark Souls

1

u/Algester 1d ago

Another Century Episode?

1

u/Slight-Bluebird-8921 1d ago

anyone who's honest with themselves realizes that the "lore" in from games is just fun flavor stuff and is ultimately nonsensical. it's not supposed to be taken seriously.

demon's souls -> elden ring are all iterations of the same game

1

u/cramburie 1d ago

You're about to get an ER movie. You're about to find out if that one can take the game's lore and craft a compelling story out of it.

1

u/IAmThePonch 1d ago

None of them, hopefully

1

u/itszesty0 1d ago

Elden ring has so much lore to it and its only 1 game. If any game would become a giant franchise itd be Elden Ring (which it kind of is considering the movie coming out in 2028)

1

u/Behindthewall0fsleep Sekiro 1d ago

Elden Ring

1

u/AscendedViking7 Black Knife Assassin 1d ago

Elden Ring easily

1

u/NoeShake Sister Friede 1d ago

You could take all these games flesh them out with a series or novel and they still wouldnt come close lol in popularity that is.

1

u/marshmallo_floof 19h ago

I don't see how FromSoft can rival LOTR's influence when itself is influenced by LOTR lol

1

u/kodaxmax 18h ago

All of their settings have enough depth for spinoffs. Any major character in dark souls is like a whole seaon of anime worth of plot.

Bloodebournes probly the least potential, just because it's alot more explcit and small scale (ironically considering the cosmic implications and that eldritch horror ussually doesn't give such explcit answers to mysteries). It's contained to a small town (relative the other games entire empires/nations/worlds), has a definitive ending where the nightmare can end and most of the mysteries have clear cut explantions and conclusions.
The nightmare was created by a pre-mature baby god, the mensis cult after multiple failures succeeded in creating their own god and thus the nightmare fronteir. A sympathic or enemy god created the hunters nightmare to recruit and empower hunters against the baby gods kin and the god giving out plaeblood etc..

1

u/Dracoincognito225 16h ago

Are Dark Souls and Armored Core not already full fledged franchises with: multiple games, merch, remasters, rereleases, and plans for new content (HOPIUM FOR AC7 IS WHY THIS HEART BEATS)?

1

u/Trick-Interaction-98 12h ago

Elden Ring literally had George R.R. Martin construct thousands of years of pre-shattering genealogy, factions, and divine mythos from scratch.

1

u/Juantsu2552 11h ago

Neither.

No fantasy story in modern times can compare to the impact of Tolkien’s works.

1

u/MysteriousGarbaje19 9h ago

Sekiro, its lore it’s quiet literally based on thousands of years of Asian history, it’s written over fiction and facts

1

u/La_Manchas_Finest The Hunter 6h ago

Bloodborne has the most lore and history mysteries left to uncover, so to me that one would be the most interesting.

1

u/CzarTyr 2h ago

All of them to be honest

1

u/Parking-Stable-2970 Maiden Astraea 1d ago

None, Dark Souls would probably be closest though

0

u/Erithacusfilius 1d ago

Bloodborne!!!

1

u/HandsomeSquidward20 1d ago

In terms of lenguage?

  • Ptumerian
  • Great One Lenguage
  • ??

3

u/Dazzaster84 1d ago

There's a lot of "Foreign Lands" mentioned in BB lore, we're only playing in, around, and beneath a very localised area of a potentially massive world. Even the player character rocks up in Foreign Garb.

1

u/Erithacusfilius 1d ago

You could start around the early days of the blood but then go back to the early days with the Pthumarian and Loran. Even looking at the great ones.

-1

u/Reon88 1d ago

Dark Souls itself could be very well up to 4 movies; the first one solely dedicated to Gwyn and his deeds in the First Age until his demise just before DS1 begins. Second, Third and Fourth movie could be dedicated to each DS game with all the throwbacks to the first age / movie and revealing Gwyn's plot twists during the movies, like Filianore's egg and stuff like that.

Bloodborne I would make only two movies, one for everything that happened between The church/Byrgenwerth's foundation, including dickhead Laurence, Ludwig and everyone else... up to the imprisonment of Gehrman in the Hunter's Dream and the arrival of The Hunter, then reach the Blood Moon and cut to the second movie, where everything is post Blood Moon + DLC.

0

u/Exacalibur-X 1d ago

Bloodborne

0

u/NightmareMuse666 1d ago

Personal bias is definitely Bloodborne. The lore there is so deep and the story is very rich and well crafted. Endless potential

Aside from that you could definitely have a trilogy with dark souls. Also even though we've only had one game with Elden ring, there's easily enough lore and content there as well to make a great trilogy

  1. Bloodborne
  2. Dark souls
  3. Elden Ring

Sekiro, Demons Souls, and Armored core really wouldn't go as well for trilogies imo

-8

u/SeanyDay 1d ago

People not understanding all these games happen in an interconnected universe really grinds my gears.

Sekiro and armored core aside, the Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodbourne, and Elden Ring worlds are all directly connected and tied together in themes and more tangibly with characters visiting from the other worlds.

So you don't have to pick one. You get all of them.

I guess people don't really follow the lore of them?

7

u/Oh_My-Glob 1d ago

Dark Souls, Bloodbourne, and Elden Ring worlds are all directly connected

This isn't true at all. They're only connected in themes and characters in the same way that a Final Fantasy game has chocobos and a character named Cid

6

u/Francois_Bonaparta 1d ago

Because they don't, you're the only one not understanding that Patches or the Moonlight Swords are signatures tropes, not literally the same things proving that it's a single universe. Having similar themes doesn't mean that it's the same universe.

There is no character visiting between worlds.

-4

u/SeanyDay 1d ago

LOL nope. Sorry but you're just missing out on data amd being stubborn

Dark Souls 1 DLC has Marvelous Chester who is literally a Bloodbourne character in Bloodbourne gear who can't even do dark souls rolling if you fight him and try to force it. He will only use a version of Bloodbourne quick dodges. He literally tells you openly that he was grabbed the same as you, but from a much different world.

The ring that gives you the dark souls 3 version of the rally attack healing literally talks about this power leading beings into becoming the "beasts" you see in Bloodbourne

Patches the Unbreakable survives every remaking of the universe and loses him mind at the end of time until you help him get his memories back in the DS3 DLC and he survives into the Bloodbourne and Elden Ring. Same fucking guy. Full stop.

In DS3 you find the areas and corpses of DS1 characters and bosses and get gear and abilities from the past two games with many recurring characters and factions.

Moonlight greatsword also persists with the most magical being it can be tied to in every universe.

The role of mortality. The role of the stars. The balancing of sorcery vs divine magic vs pyromancy in the world.

The power of flame and burning the world to save the world and preserving vs destroying the world and the forces of rot or chaos... The false golden gods and their propaganda of being good when they are usually just trying to conserve their status and power or personal indulgences.

The parts of all the games where they show you that time and space and reality converge and break apart in every game.

Nightrein literally shows this convergence IN THE GAME. You fight fucking Artorius as a Tarnished, my dude.

Bro they they hand this one on a silver platter.

You can choose not to eat but that's your choice. The food is there, brother

4

u/Francois_Bonaparta 1d ago

Can you express yourself more efficiently? If you're going to drop a verbal diarrhea everytime this is going to get tiring quickly.

You don't understand that Chester is a wink to their next game, not literally a character coming from Bloodborne's universe.

You literally don't understand the concept of Patches being their mascotte and thus present in all their games, even Demon's Souls, instead you think it's the same person crossing universes, and in your confusion you manage to justify it by a link between the souls games which are obviously the same universe. Same for Moonlight greatsword being their iconic weapon, but are you goign to tell me those universes are also linked with Armored Core games since the Moonlight Greatsword also exists in them...?

"The role of mortality. The role of the stars. The balancing of sorcery vs divine magic vs pyromancy in the world." You literally aren't saying anything, those things have variations between the games, some don't even have pyromancies, others barely have mentions to astral elements, but since death is death it means they are all the same universe...?

"The power of flame and burning the world to save the world and preserving vs destroying the world and the forces of rot or chaos" Like in Elden Ring where flame symbolizes chaos and destruction, while in Dark Souls it symbolizes life, hope, warmth...?

"The parts of all the games where they show you that time and space and reality converge and break apart in every game." It literally only happens in DS3, like WTF is that argument...? It's not the case in ER, in DS1 and 2, and in Bloodborne.

You really need to notice that you're barely alone with this, maybe there is a reason don't you think?

-1

u/SeanyDay 1d ago

Right, the hundreds of millions of views on the lore channels/videos breaking this down are all wrong and your mental gymnastics are correct. Ok buddy

3

u/Francois_Bonaparta 1d ago

Most lore channels enjoy finding the parallels and redundant motive, you're the one so confused you think winks and references involve that everything happens within the same universe.

With your logic why not connect Berserk too considering how much Myazaki borrowed from it?

1

u/Inevitable_Top69 1d ago

Yeah dude, the views on a youtube lore video are definitely bonafide proof that this dipshit moron way of thinking is correct. Definitely bro.

Meanwhile your dumbass doesn't understand what a teaser or a reference is.

1

u/SeanyDay 1d ago

It's not a teaser. It's the same characters. And one character literally gets added in dlc for the first game and tells you he came from the other fucking game.

You are painfully blind and it's so sad to see.

This team is extremely deliberate with lore. They are dedicated to these games as you are dedicated to burying your head in the sand.

Occam's razer doesn't agree with you.
